Family isn’t always blood. It’s the people in your life who want you in theirs; the ones who accept you for who you are. The ones who would do anything to see you smile and who love you no matter what.

ACCOMMODATION needed by a single parishioner for a maximum rental of R3 000 per month. If you are able to

assist, please contact Linda in the parish office who will put you in contact with the person concerned.

OUR BEST WISHES for a speedy recovery go to Manrico Barbieri after his recent operation and to Marj Petsch who is having a cataract operation in July.

-The parishioners who spent time at Adoration and joined in Benediction to mark the Feast of Corpus Christi.

- Jenny Meilhon for organizing the Forum on 9 June, with special thanks to Dr Edwina Ward, the guest speaker, and to everyone who attended. The talk certainly elicited a great deal of interest and hopefully, Edwina will return to the parish in near future to talk more extensively about healing of memories.- Those parishioners who gathered together to pray the Rosary for priests.- The LifeTeen Core team and other young people who accepted the invitation to get together to celebrate Youth Day with bring ‘n braai after Mass. THANK YOU FROM THE SIMPSON FAMILY to the entire parish for all the love, support and prayers for our precious Dad and our whole family during his illness and with his passing. Dad really loved St Doms so much so his involvement in the parish was a given. It was a haven for him and a place where so many long-lasting friendships have been made. He is at peace knowing that Maureen has those friends around her as she deals with the loss of her soulmate, We have no doubt that Dad is still celebrating life to the fullest just now with Our Lord and that gives us peace. We hope to live out his mottos on life “This is the life!” or “Hey buddy, it’s good to be alive!” Deepest thanks from Maureen, Debbie, Mychelle, Sharyn, Chas and family.

STEVE SIMPSON : Steve is one of those special people who have contributed so much to the life of St Doms over the years. In the 40 years during which he and Maureen have been part of our St Doms community, they have been actively involved in the parish. Not only was he Parish Pastoral Council Chairman, but he was also the original Chairman of the Poverty, Unemployment and Aids Committee (now the Community Service Committee), and, until very recently, headed up the Welcoming and Stewardship Committee. He delighted in his photography and in his role as St Dom’s “official” photographer, took the photos of the First Communicants and Confirmation candidates, as well the PPC members, the progress of the building alterations and the various flower shows. He and Maureen were both, at one stage, members of the Social Life Committee, participating in the Golden Oldies entertainment and other shows staged by the St Doms thespians – could anyone ever forget their delightful rendition of “You’re never Too Old to Fall in Love” or as part of the “Michael Jackson” dancing quartet with Pat and John Daly? His death leaves a big void, not only in the lives of his beloved family, but in his greater St Doms family. He ran his race well and his memory will live on.

LITURGICALLY SPEAKING The intention for the first Saturday Mass and Rosary at 08h00 on 4 July at 08h00 is for the many people who are

suffering as a result of the cold winter weather. Hoping to see you there. The 08h00 Mass on Sunday 5 July will be a bilingual one and we look forward to the enthusiastic participation of

all our parishioners. Please avail yourselves of the opportunity to spend some time in prayer and meditation in the presence of the

Blessed Sacrament on Wednesdays after 06h00 Mass until 18h00. We remind you, too, of Power Hour each Friday starting with Mass at 17h30 and ending with Adoration.

Remember too that Power Hour on the first Friday of the month ends with Benediction. The talks on how we can serve God by using our time, talents and treasures will be given by Mike Ronald on 18

and 19 July and Stwardship Dedication will be on 25/26 July. In anticipation, we thank you for answering God’s call to serve Him through our parish.

The First Reconciliation service will be held at 18h00 on 29 July. Please pray for the young people involved and for their families as they prepare for this important Sacrament.

It is particularly important for families with young children to attend Mass regularly – especially those children who are preparing for the Sacraments of First Confession and First Holy Communion. They need to know that we are the church.

With our Stewardship Campaign in mind, it is a good time to ponder on the following which was handed out during our last campaign:Prepare my heart for serving, let my spirit heed your call;In obedience to the Father, Our Lord and King of all.Fill my thoughts with You, Lord, renew my mind todayI give you full control in the things I do and say.Take these hands You gave me and use them for Your goodTo glorify Your Kingdom in the ways I know I should.Remove all doubt within me, Lord, I trust You’ll find a wayTo mould me in Your image as I walk with You today.

CREATIVE ENERGY QUILT SHOW : The 18th South African National Quilt Festival displaying the work of top South African and international quilters, including our own Sue Cameron, will take place at Kearsney College from 3 to 6 July from 08h00 to 17h00. You will also have the opportunity to participate in demonstrations and small workshops given by both South African and international teachers. At a cost of only R50 per person, this spectacular event is not to be missed.

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS AND VIEWS The service for the patients at Hillcrest Government Hospital will take place on Sunday 12 July. The helpers on

this occasion are the members of the Spiritual Life Committee – but it is not limited to them only. Anyone who would like to lend a hand in taking patients to the chapel is more than welcome. The group will meet in the carpark at 10h15 – it is time well spent.

The CaFE series “Mary – A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother” continues on Tuesday mornings at 10h00 and Thursday evenings at 19h00 until 16 July. It is an interesting and inspiring series given by Dr Edward Sri and everyone is welcome.

The Community Service Committee is appealing for toys, particularly dolls and little cars for young children at the Phakamani Creche in Molweni. These may be placed in the SSVP trolley for distribution by the Committee members.

The Community Service Committee is raffling a beautiful single bed quilt to raise funds to finance their various projects in skills training for the local community. Tickets are only R5 each and the draw will take place at the end of August. Please give this project your usual enthusiastic support.

Unfortunately, due to the poor response, the 50’s and 60’s evening was cancelled. The Social Life Committee has other exciting projects in hand, such as the very popular International Food Festival to celebrate St Dominics Feast Day, which will take place on 09 August. Watch the bulletin for more details.

You are reminded that the inspiring four session series on Marriage and Family will start at 19h00 on 27 July at the home of Janet and Raymond Turner. This is open to all married couples. For more information, please contact Janet on 083 7021400 or email [email protected].

Proverbs 31 is the theme of our Ladies’ Day “Wondrous Women” to be held on 15 August. The day will consist of 5 talks given by lay people, covering the challenges facing modern women. It will be a day of learning, self-discovery and fun and will include tea and lunch. As we can only accommodate 100 ladies, it is important that you book your place as soon as possible. Watch for the posters displaying all the details.

The Alpha Marriage course for married couples facilitated by Pauline Rousseau will start on 8 August and will be held on 7 consecutive Thursdays starting with candlelit dinners. It is a practical course giving any married couple the tools to build a strong healthy marriage. Watch for details on the posters.

We are delighted that Helen Bellew is organizing a flower show which will take place on 30 and 31 October. You will be updated on this spectacular event – so watch this space!

POINTS TO PONDER- Don’t let your worries get the best of you – remember Moses started out as a basket-case.- Some people are kind, polite and sweet-spirited until you try to sit in their pews.- The task ahead of us is never as great as the Power behind us.- Coincidence is when God chooses to remain anonymous.

YOUTH TALK SorryCharlie: A Response to the Charlie Charlie Challenge by RACHEL ALLEN – Adapted from the Life Teen WebsiteIf you haven’t heard about the Charlie Charlie Challenge by now, I’ll catch you up quickly. Apparently, the idea is that you draw a grid on a piece of paper, write yeses and nos on the squares, cross some pencils over it, and chant something to get a Mexican demon named Charlie to move the pencils in order to answer your questions about the future. Aside from logical things like gravity and physics interfering, what could go wrong? Well… a lot.First of all, the demonic and occult are real things. As real as our God is, so is His enemy. And the evil one would love nothing more than to pull us away from the God who loves us so much. If you haven’t gone there, DON’T. There’s nothing good that will come from it. “Playing” with such things is incredibly foolish and dangerous. By engaging with the occult and forces of darkness, you are opening a door to things you do not want to open.Furthermore, getting involved in such things is a big violation of the First Commandment – you shall have no other gods besides Him. All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to “unveil” the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honour, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone. (CCC 2116)Even if you think it’s all a big joke and “don’t really believe in that stuff,” actions speak louder than words. And your actions have just said that you put more faith in some number two pencils than you do in the God who created the universe. If this (or Ouija boards, etc.) is something you’ve participated in, then you need to get to the Confessional,

ASAP. There’s nothing to be afraid of, there – the Lord is waiting with open arms to heal and restore what’s broken in all of us.And be not afraid – although there is a battle and evil is at hand, there’s an army to fight alongside you. Specifically, St. Michael the Archangel – his prayer is one of my favourites for protection against the evil one. With saints and angels on our side, there’s no need to fear. Yes, the battle is real, but we know who wins. And He’s on our side.I understand the temptation, I do. We are all curious about our future, have all wondered how it’s all going to turn out, and can all feel directionless at times. How many times have we thought that life would just be so much easier if we could just get some clear-cut, yes or no answers? Just tell us the plan, God, and we’re in!Over and over in the scriptures, God promises us that He has a plan for our lives (Isaiah 64:3), that He knows our future (Jeremiah 29:11), that He will provide (Philippians 4:19). And so, to live our lives according to those purposes, all we have to do is whatever He tells us to do.Instead of wasting your time with Charlie (or Ouija boards, or whatever trend comes next), spend your time with Christ. Put those pencils to good use by marking up your Bible and writing in your journal. He is speaking to you, there. Have you ever tried listening? It might seem challenging at first, but with time and a little practice, I promise that you will be able to hear Him speaking to you, there.Know that whatever your future holds, He promises that it’s in His hands (Isaiah 49:16). And that beats getting your palm read, every time.

SATURDAY NIGHT SUPPER CLUB : The next get-together of the Saturday Supper Club will be at Q4 Prawns (above Shaves, opposite Hirsch’s Superstore) on Saturday 4 July at 19h00. Anyone is welcome to join in – please contact Linda in the parish office by 1 July at the latest so that the booking may be made. Also, please advise Linda if you are in need of transport.

RULES FROM GOD 1. Wake Up !! Decide to have a good day. "Today is the day the Lord hath made; let us rejoice and be glad in it" - Psalms 118:24 2. Dress Up !! The best way to dress up is to put on a smile. A smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks. "The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at outward appearance; but the Lord looks at the heart." - I Samuel 16:7 3 . Shut Up!! Say nice things and learn to listen. God gave us two ears and one mouth, so He must have meant for us to do twice as much listening as talking. "He who guards his lips guards his soul." - Proverbs 13:3 4. Stand Up!!..... For what you believe in. Stand for something or you will fall for anything.. "Let us not be weary in doing good; for at the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good..." - Galatians 6:9-10 5. Look Up !!.. To the Lord. "I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me." - Philippians 4:13 6. Reach Up !!... For something higher. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, And He will direct your path." - Proverbs 3:5-6 7. Lift Up !!.. Your Prayers. "Do not worry about anything; Instead PRAY ABOUT EVERYTHING." Philippians 4:6 God answers prayer.

CHRISTMAS IN JULYYou are invited to a “Christmas in July” luncheon to be held on Saturday 25 July at 12 noon. The cost is only R150 per person for a sumptuous three-course meal, gluhwein and juice, and a

“Secret Santa” gift! If you would prefer some other liquid refreshment, please feel free to bring your own. Bookings may be made by contacting Linda in the parish office – but we suggest that you hurry so as to avoid disappointment.

THE SOCIETY OF ST VINCENT DE PAULSome of the very grateful recipients of the baby starter packs donated to them by SSVP through the 1000 Hills community helpers are shown in the picture, for which the Society received a lovely letter of thanks. Heartfelt thanks were also received from Raymond Perrier, the Director of the Denis Hurley Centre, for the assistance given to them in terms of cash, goods and time. Apart from the members who are directly involved, the Society’s work is made possible by the support of the St Dom’s parishioners. We received the following from Helen Bellew on behalf of SSVP: “A HUGE thank you to all the members of the parish who contributed in any way to our winter warmth campaign. What an amazing response we had! To date we have received 1 018 beanies (300 of which were knitted by Dawn Wright – well done Dawn!) and many beautiful jerseys. We know that they are all going to make a difference in the lives of many little ones this winter. Your generosity is so very much appreciated!

LAST LAUGH Old Mrs Watkins woke one morning to find that a river had flooded the entire first floor of her house and was still rising. Two men passing in a rowboat shouted to invite her to row to safety with them. “No thank you,” she replied, “The Lord will provide.” By evening the water level forced her to climb on top of the roof for safety. A man in a motorboat offered to help her. “Don’t trouble yourself,” she said “The Lord will provide.” Pretty soon, she had to seek refuge on the chimney, but when the Red Cross came by on patrol, she shouted “The Lord will provide”. Eventually Mrs Watkins drowned. Thoroughly annoyed she came through the pearly gates. “What happened?” she cried. “For crying out loud,” God said, “I sent three boats to rescue you.”
