Spend a semester, summer or year conducting original research with a faculty mentor. Sophisticated on-campus resources empower you to take on work typically found at the graduate level. A number of Elon students present their research at regional, national and even international conferences.

Summer Research FellowshipsSURE Fellows, Summer Undergraduate Research Experience students, spend eight weeks as full-time co-researchers with faculty mentors. They receive stipends and on-campus housing. Students compete for SURE Fellowships, which are awarded based on an application and proposal prepared collaboratively with their mentors.

Alumna update Tori Davis ’09Tori, a 2009 Fulbright Scholar, is continuing to research Japanese value diplomacy at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan. She has published research on U.S. anti-human trafficking policies in the Virginia Policy Review.

More than 1/3 of Elon students work with faculty on research beyond course

requirements.

Each spring, hundreds of Elon students present their original research at the Spring Undergraduate Research Forum, SURF, a daylong event celebrating research at Elon.

Elon’s Project PERCS, Program for Ethnographic Research and Community Studies, supports teams of students, faculty and community leaders in multi-year, interdisciplinary, ethnographic projects.

The first Project PERCS initiative began

in 2008 and explores the Cowee Valley, a region that lies in the heart of the Little Tennessee River Valley in North Carolina.Students and faculty worked with quilters, documented stories of Cowee elders, participated in the preservation of a community general store and practiced ethno-photography. Their work

will be presented at the University of Pennsylvania Education Ethnography Conference, the Appalachian Studies Conference and the National Conference on Undergraduate Research. Two articles are out for review in scholarly journals and the project will be exhibited at the Cowee general store.

Dr. Tom Mould, sociology and anthropology, is the director of PERCS and teaches a class in which students produce their own video ethnographies. Several of his students’

videos have garnered national and international attention.

Dr. Bird Stasz, education, is leading the Cowee project and has been doing international development work in education for nearly 20 years. The work takes her to the four Central Asian Republics to train teachers and improve the physical infrastructure of the schools.

Volunteering meets active learning

Service learning integrates what you learn in the classroom while helping those who need it most. Education majors tutor children learning English, leisure and sport management majors work with non-profit agencies to plan community events, and human service studies majors help community organizations assess the effectiveness of outreach efforts.

Elon is a community bound by compassion for the world. Whether you’re a seasoned volunteer or are beginning to explore how your actions can benefit others, Elon provides a legion of opportunities to match your service interests and keep you in touch with the world's needs.

AmAndA BRown ‘10Major: MathematicsMinors: African/African American Studies, Public Health

Amanda has blended service and academics into sustainable work that is changing lives. As part of the Periclean Scholars Class of 2010, she has spent three years working to improve health care access in Ghana. Amanda has bridged her work in Ghana with her academic ambitions by developing a mathematical model that demonstrates the value of using bed nets to lower malaria infection rates.

Elon’s nearly 10-year partnership with Project Pericles, a national non-profit organization, has produced projects of global change while also creating greater awareness of civic engagement and social responsibility on campus. Freshmen can apply to be Periclean Scholars and those selected work together to design and implement three-year projects that have included working to open a health care clinic in Ghana, helping to build a village in Zambia and building a school in Mexico – changing lives one brick at a time.

Tops in the nation For the fourth year in a row, Elon has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for commitment to service learning and civic engagement.

ABBE GOLDING ’10Major: Psychology Minor: Biology

There aren’t many 22-year-olds who’ve worked elbow-to-elbow with world-renowned physicians. Abbe, an intern in the Duke University School of Medicine’s Division of Medical Genetics, is an exception. She schedules echocardiograms, participates in patient consultations, sits in on roundtable discussions and has presented research on genetic disorders to Duke specialists. It’s time well spent as she prepares for a career as a genetic counselor.

Even during a term studying in South Africa, Abbe continued to learn more about her selected field through a mini-internship at the Sarah Fox Children’s Convalescent Hospital in Cape Town.

“My time at Duke has taught me so much about how a clinic works, how it functions. I have some of the world’s foremost researchers helping me apply to graduate school. The internship experience has been absolutely exceptional.”

“I’ve worked with the Elon Academy for three years; this is my second year as a mentor. I want to do everything I can to ease the college application process for students who might not otherwise consider college. The time I’ve spent working in this program has really helped me realize that my future lies in education. I'm considering a career as a principal where I could work for changes on a more macro level.”

Dan Glass works with Dr. Ben Evans to try to produce magnetic microparticles, which could be used for more efficient drug delivery to patients undergoing chemotherapy.

“I always feel like I can approach Dr. Evans with questions. When I came to Elon, I didn’t expect that all of these incredibly intelligent academics would really want to talk to me, but all of the faculty I’ve met are like that — they feel vested in my success.”

— Dan Glass

“What makes Dan a top-notch researcher is that, at an early stage, he has learned to take ownership of his project. Anyone can follow protocols, but Dan has developed a strong sense of independence in his work. He understands the problems he is trying to solve, and knows how to go about chasing down a solution. The exciting thing about this is that it makes Dan more a colleague than a student."

Randy had worked toward this moment for years. It was just him, a camera, some audio equipment and the entire city of San Francisco. Now all he needed was a brilliant story idea. Randy was one of five finalists and to win it all, he had to conceive, shoot and edit a TV news story on an economic topic impacting the Bay Area. This was no moment to panic. Randy hustled into action, buffered by years spent working with Elon’s student-run TV news show, Phoenix14News. Randy had covered presidential debates, reported live from President Obama’s inauguration, and served as an anchor and senior correspondent. The Hearst assignment was tough, but he was prepared. Randy came up with a story that focused on the fishing industry and sailed into first place. Creativity. Experience. Success.

KARA CowdRiCK ‘10Major: Elementary EducationWinner of Elon’s Outstanding Academic Service-

Learning Student Paper

Kara’s college search was about so much more than academics. She demanded a university that would prep her not only for professional success, but also for a fulfilling life. In Elon’s School of Education, she found a program that would test her academically while ensuring she had nearly limitless opportunities to incorporate service into the curriculum. Kara has taught lower-income children in Honduras, constructed an outdoor classroom for North Carolina students, tutored children learning to speak English and worked in local classrooms since her freshman year.

During one of her classroom experiences, Kara worked with a student struggling to read. I go to events all around campus and take advantage of all the learning opportunities you can find at Elon. The way I see it, if I limited myself to one discipline, I’d never be able to play characters who have different perspectives.”

45

The Elon approach to affordabilityFor decades, our first financial aid policy has

been to keep the cost reasonable – often as

much as $10,000 below other private colleges

and universities our applicants consider.

That in itself makes a big difference in what

you will invest. And it’s this cost difference

that catches the attention of the national

rankings. Our goal is to help you understand

all the financial resources that make an Elon

education affordable for you.

Scholarships based on your talentsMany financial aid awards are given solely

on the basis of the talents and achievements

you have demonstrated during high school.

Whether you are a top student, a talented

performer or a star athlete, there may be a

merit-based scholarship or grant for you!

Presidential ScholarshipsTop student – top recognition: that’s the

philosophy of the Presidential Scholarship

award. You have made academics a

priority, and we want to recognize your

commitment and hard work by investing

in your potential to be a top student at

Elon. Presidential Scholarships are awarded

to the top 25 percent of the incoming

freshman class and are based solely on

the high school transcript and SAT/ACT

scores. You don’t even have to apply. We

do the work for you and award anywhere

from $4,000 to $4,500 per year, renewable

annually for a total of four years based on

acceptable academic performance.

Fellows ScholarshipsDistinguish yourself by becoming one

of the Elon University Fellows. These

distinguished academic and leadership

programs are based on your interests and

talent and require an application. Fellows

programs include Honors, Elon College (for

the arts and sciences), Communications,

Business, Teaching, Leadership and

International. Read all about the Fellows

programs in this viewbook or online

at www.elon.edu/fellows. Fellows

scholarships range from $2,500 to $10,000

per year in addition to other program

grants for study abroad, research or

internship opportunities. In several of

the Fellows programs, scholarships may

also be combined with the Presidential

Scholarship to boost your total even

higher!

The Fellows application is available online

and is due January 10.

Engineering ScholarshipsYou’re set: engineering is your major and

Elon’s dual-degree program offers you

the best of a liberal arts education and an

engineering education. Learn full details at

www.elon.edu/admissions/engineering.

Two $7,000 scholarships are awarded

annually and are renewable for the three

years you spend at Elon. An application

is required (it’s online), as well as letters of

recommendation and an interview. Step

one – an application is due January 10. The

engineering scholarship may be combined

with a Presidential Scholarship.

Performing ArtsTalk about national attention! Elon’s

programs in the performing arts bring

New York agents directly to our stage.

Scholarships are awarded by the individual

departments based on an application

and an audition. Award amounts vary.

Please note: your freshman application

does not serve as your application for a

performing arts scholarship. So, if this

is your forte, contact the Department of

values &value1 of only 3 universities

in N.C. named "Best

Value Colleges" based

on academics, cost and

financial aid.

Grant, plus airfare for one semester in

London or Costa Rica. Applications are

available in high schools and are due in

late October.

College is the investment for a lifetime,

and at Elon approximately 60 percent of

our students receive assistance with that

investment in the form of financial aid.

That’s good news for the bottom line, which

is really the only important factor in the

cost of college. So, what’s your bottom line

for the cost of an Elon education? You must

consider all the factors. Here are some of

the options:

Need-based assistanceFor students who qualify for need-based

assistance, Elon offers a full range of

federal, state and institutional grants, loans

and scholarships. The amount of federal

aid you are qualified to receive will be

determined from the Free Application for

Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Institutional

financial aid eligibility is based upon

additional information collected on the CSS

PROFILE. We recommend starting early so

that your aid file is complete by mid-March.

That way you will receive notification of

your aid eligibility in plenty of time to make

your final decision.

A number of need-based endowed

scholarships are available to incoming

freshmen through a special application

process, the Elon University Endowed

Scholarship Application, due February 10.

You should complete this application even if

you have not received an admissions decision

or completed all of the standard financial

aid forms. Better to be ready than too late!

Full details about the scholarships, award

amounts and the application are available at:

www.elon.edu/endowedscholarships.

Non-need based loansThere are financial resources for students

and families who do not qualify for need-

based assistance. Elon participates in

several of these loans programs. Check with

the Office of Financial Planning to get the

most up-to-date information or look online
