You now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again,

The Third Sunday after Easter

Opening Hymn: 149 (Part 1: vs 1-4) Light’s glittering morn bedecks the sky

The Collect:Almighty God, who shows to them that are in error the light of your truth, to the intent that they may return into the way of righteousness: Grant to all them that are admitted into the fellowship of Christ's religion, that they may forsake those things that are contrary to their profession, and follow all such things as are agreeable to the same; through our Lord Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Old Testament Reading: Genesis 45:3-10

Psalm 57First Chant

Second Chant

Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me, for my soul ’ trusteth in ’ thee : and under the shadow of thy wings shall be my refuge, until this ’ tyranny be ’ over’past.2 I will call unto the ’ most high ’ God : even

unto the God that shall perform the cause ’ which I ’ have in ’ hand.3 He shall ’ send from ’ heaven : and save me from the reproof of ’ him that would ’ eat me ’ up.

-2-4 God shall send forth his ’ mercy and ’ truth : my ’ soul is a’mong ’ lions.5 And I lie even among the children of men, that are ’ set on ’ fire : whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their ’ tongue a ’ sharp ’ sword.Second Chant6 Set up thyself O God, a’bove the ’ heavens : and thy glory a’bove ’ all the ’ earth.First Chant7 They have laid a net for my feet, and press-ed ’ down my ’ soul : they have digged a pit before me, and are fallen into the ’ midst of ’ it them’selves.Second Chant8 My heart is fixed O God my ’ heart is ’ fixed : I will ’ sing and ’ give ’ praise.9 Awake up my glory, awake ’ lute and ’ harp : I myself ’ will a’wake right ’ early.10 I will give thanks unto thee O Lord a’mong the ’ people : and I will sing unto ’ thee a’mong the ’ nations.11 For the greatness of thy mercy reacheth ’ unto the ’ heavens : and thy ’ truth ’ unto the ’ clouds.12 Set up thyself, O God, a’bove the ’ heavens : and thy glory a’bove ’ all the ’ earth.Glory be to the Father ’ and to • the ’ Son : and ’ to the ’ Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning is ’ now and • ever ’ shall be : world without ’ end. A ’ — ’ men.

New Testament Reading: 1 Peter 2:11-12Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honourable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as

servants of God. Honour everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the emperor.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gradual Hymn: 517 Loving Shepherd of thy sheep

-3-

Gospel Acclamation:Alleluia  (4x)I am the first and the last, says the Lord, and the living one; I was dead, and behold I am alive for evermore. Alleluia  (4x)

The Gospel: St John 16:16-22The Gospel is announced, we sing: Glory to you, O Lord“A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.” So some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.” Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

After the Gospel is read we sing: Praise to you, O Christ
