Welcome to English 201! This is the 201 orientation.

Please put away your phones and all other electronic devices.

The professor’s name (that’s me) is

Andrew Gottlieb

For those of you who might like to know more about my name or might have difficulty

remembering it, I have prepared the following tutorial.

In German, Gottlieb means beloved of God.

lieb means love

So, you could call me love, but then someone might get the wrong idea.

got means God

So, you could call me God. That’s easy to remember, and I won’t mind a

bit,but maybe that’s not such a good idea either.

Most students call me professor.

That’s even easier, since you only need toremember one name for all your teachers.

On occasion, students have called me Mr. Andrew.

Mr. and a first name don’t go together.

So, let’s not use that one.

One time a student called me YO!

I’m not too crazy about that!

So, just call me professorand everything will be just fine.

English 201 is a literature and composition course.

There are four genres (or types) of literature: short stories, novels, poems, and

plays.

We will be read and discuss a short story, a variety of poems, and two plays.

To access course materials, go to my website at

andrewd222.wordpress.com

All of the materials and assignments are there.

For English 201, you have to buy only one book.

The name of the book is:

Sophocles – The Three Theban Plays – Antigone, Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus. Translated by Robert Fagles. Introduction and Notes by Bernard Knox. Penguin Books. First published in the United States of America by Viking Penguin Inc. 1982.ISBN 0 14 044.425 4. Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 83-13053 (CIP data available)

You can get a good deal on amazon.com.

To order online, copy and paste the title and translator into the Google search bar.

Make sure to get the edition translated by Robert Fagles. Different translations are

very different and you will get confused when we are reading the play together if you get an

edition translated by a different translator.

Your papers will not be accepted unless they are stapled, so make sure to buy a stapler.

For those of you who have never seen a stapler, here’s what it looks like.

You will also need an

8/12 x 11inch notebookand a pen.

Students in English 201 are required to write

a TOTAL of 4 papers including a research project.

The three shorter papers are 4 double-space pages.

The research project is 6 double-space pages.

Papers must satisfy all of the specifications to receive credit.

These specifications are in the syllabus which is on the website mentioned earlier and are

included along with each of the writing assignments.

We will go over these before each paper is due.

The due dates for all of the writing assignments are on the website.

The class rules are as follows:

1. No Coming Late or Leaving Early:Students who come more than ten minutes late or leave early will be marked absent.

2. No Talking Out of Turn:Only one person can talk at one time. This means that private conversations are not allowed. People who speak out of turn and who refuse to cease from speaking after being asked more than once may be asked to leave for the day. If this behavior persists they will be asked to withdraw from the course. Students who remain in class after being asked to leave will receive an F for the course.

3. No Rude or Insulting Behavior:Students who are rude or insulting either to the teacher or to their classmates will be asked to leave the class for the day and possibly to withdraw from the course. Students who remain in class after being asked to leave will receive an F for the course.

4. No Electronic Devices:Students are not allowed to keep any electronic devices on their desks during class. This includes lap tops, IPads, and cell phones. All notes and writing in class must be done on paper. Students who refuse to follow this rule may be asked to leave the class. Those who persist in breaking this rule will be asked to withdraw from the course. Students who remain in class after being asked to leave will receive an F for the course.

5. No Late Papers:Students are required to hand in all of the writing assignments by the due dates. Late papers will not be accepted. Students who fail to hand in one paper on time will receive an F for that paper. Students who hand in two late papers will receive an F for the final grade. For further rules regarding writing assignments see writing specifications in the class packet.

6. No Plagiarism:Students who plagiarize will receive an F for the paper and an F for the course.

Now, let’s go to the fiction section on the website and look at the first assignment.
