The 9 th POMS-HK International Conference Department of Decision Sciences and Managerial Economics The Chinese University of Hong Kong Highlights The 9th POMS-HK International Conference was held on January 6-7, 2018 in The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Hosted by the Department of Decision Sciences and Managerial Economics, the conference is a great success with the following highlights: The Conference has broken the record with 277 registered participants from Australia, Canada, mainland China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, UK, U.S. There were two keynote speeches by Prof. Teck Hua Ho (NUS) and Prof. Yinyu Ye (Stanford) as well as two tutorials by Prof. David Simchi-Levi (MIT) and Prof. Sridhar Seshadri (ISB), together with 49 technical sessions Prof. George Shanthikumar delivered a remark on behalf of the POMS Society First to introduce “Academic Job Market of Asia” Colloquium for senior PhD students and postdocs Invited industry practitioners to join the conference and banquet dinner to foster exchanges

Highlights

The 9th POMS-HK International Conference was held on January 6-7, 2018 in The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Hosted by the Department of Decision Sciences and Managerial Economics, the conference is a great success with the following highlights:

The Conference has broken the record with 277 registered participants from Australia, Canada, mainland China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, UK, U.S.

There were two keynote speeches by Prof. Teck Hua Ho (NUS) and Prof. Yinyu Ye (Stanford) as well as two tutorials by Prof. David Simchi-Levi (MIT) and Prof. Sridhar Seshadri (ISB), together with 49 technical sessions

Prof. George Shanthikumar delivered a remark on behalf of the POMS Society First to introduce “Academic Job Market of Asia” Colloquium for senior PhD students and

postdocs Invited industry practitioners to join the conference and banquet dinner to foster exchanges

Main Conference

The two-day conference started with an opening keynote speech by Prof. Yinyu Ye (K. T. Li Chair Professor of Engineering Management Science & Engineering of Stanford University). He shared with us the recent research development on “Distributionally Robust Stochastic and Online Optimization”. On the second day, Prof. Teck Hua Ho (Senior Deputy President and Provost, Tan Chin Tuan Centennial Professor of National University of Singapore) delivered his keynote speech on “Does Big Data Solve Big Problems?”. For tutorial sessions, Prof. David Simchi-Levi (Professor of Engineering Systems, Engineering Systems Division and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and Prof. Sridhar Seshadri (Professor of Operations Management, Area Leader (Operations Management) and Senior Advisor (Faculty & Research) to the Dean, Indian School of Business) shared their pioneer research works on online resource allocation in revenue management and operations management research in agriculture, respectively, to the conference participants. Each tutorial is conducted in a primary lecture hall with live broadcasting in another lecture hall. In addition to keynote speeches and tutorials, we have for the first time introduced "Academic Job Market of Asia" Colloquium for senior PhD students and postdocs who are interested in looking for academic jobs in this region. There were 6 panel members and 56 participants attended the colloquium.

Banquet Dinner

Student Paper Competition

This year we received 28 submissions for the student paper competition. After two rounds of rigorous

review processes, five outstanding papers were chosen to receive the award. The award presentation

was held during the conference banquet dinner.

First-Place Prize:

o Gar Goei Loke (National University of Singapore) for the paper titled "The Analytics of

Bed Shortages: Coherent Metric, Prediction and Optimization"

Second-Place Prize:

o Haihui Shen (City University of Hong Kong) for the paper titled "Ranking and Selection

with Covariates for Personalized Decision Making"

Honorable Mentions:

o Jiayi Joey Yu (Tsinghua University) for the paper titled "Should On-Demand Ride

Services be Regulated? An Analytical Evaluation of Chinese Government Policies"

o Jinzhi Bu (The Chinese University of Hong Kong) for the paper titled "Constant-Order

Policies for Lost-Sales Inventory Models with Random Supply Functions: Asymptotics

and Heuristic"

o Yifu Li (The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) for the paper titled

"Service Design under Acclimation and Non-homogeneous Memory Decay"
