Hailed by the New Yorker as “a mini-Lincoln Center for classical music downtown,” Trinity Wall Street continues to dominate the early and contemporary music scenes this season. Under the leadership of Director of Music and the Arts Julian Wachner, Trinity’s ensembles – anchored by resident contemporary music orchestra NOVUS NY and the Grammy-nominated Choir of Trinity Wall Street and Trinity Baroque Orchestra – launch an important new commissioning project titled MASS REIMAGININGS; take part in multiple world, U.S., and NY premieres; perform in the world premiere recording of Julia Wolfe’s Anthracite Fields; host a festival celebrating the Ginastera centenary; maintain a strong presence at key venues in New York; venture further afield on tour; and continue to provide inspiring liturgical programs to their congregation at home. As the New York Times observes, “Trinity’s music is indispensable and unmissable,” representing “the top of musical life in New York.”

The 2015-16 season in briefBuilding on its long history of commissioning and premiering new music, Trinity kicks off its major new commissioning project, MASS REIMAGININGS, with the world premieres of two new masses, as well as presenting multiple other world and U.S. premieres and the New York premiere of a Trinity co-commission from David Lang.

Following a recent succession of stellar festival offerings, Trinity’s upcoming festivals comprise the annual “Twelfth Night Festival,” this year entitled “Time’s Arrow,” and a spring celebration of the Ginastera centenary, titled “Revolutions.”

Trinity’s ensembles may be heard on tour at Boston’s National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association, Montreal’s Salle Bourgie, California’s Berkeley Festival, and – closer to home – at new Brooklyn art space National Sawdust, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Lincoln Center, where the choir and Baroque orchestra return for their beloved annual holiday Messiah concert.

Meanwhile, under Wachner’s direction at Trinity Wall Street, NOVUS NY presents adventurous “Third Thursday” programs in the “Concerts at One” series, and the choir and Baroque orchestra draw their multi-season presentation of Bach’s complete cantata output, “Bach at One,” to a glorious conclusion this spring, in addition to traversing Byrd’s Cantiones Sacrae and Dufay’s complete isorhythmic motets over the course of weekly “Compline by Candlelight” offerings.

NOVUS NY, “Third Thursdays,” and “Revolutions”: a celebration of the Ginastera CentenaryUnder the auspices of Trinity’s long-running weekly series “Concerts at One,” monthly “Third Thursdays” concerts present NOVUS NY in the challenging contemporary repertoire with which it is fast gaining acclaim. In the fall, these concerts foreground the work of two great contemporary eclectics: Grammy Award-winning Finnish composer-conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen (Oct 15), and Pulitzer Prize-winner John Luther Adams (Nov 19).

It was in a once-in-a-lifetime account of Alberto Ginastera’s monumental Turbae ad passionem gregorianam that Wachner led NOVUS NY and the Choir of Trinity Wall Street in their Carnegie Hall debut last season, prompting the New York Times to note that “adventure and ambition go hand in hand at Trinity Wall Street.” This spring, Trinity’s “Revolutions” festival (March 3–May 20) salutes the great Argentinean composer’s centennial with a 15-event survey. This includes four concerts in which NOVUS NY explores musical revolution through the neo-expressionism of Ginastera’s final period, the masterpieces of Beethoven’s third, Stravinsky’s Les Noces, and Fauré’s Requiem (March 17, April 21, May 15, & May 20).

Twelfth Night Festival and “MASS REIMAGININGS”Celebrating the traditional twelve days of the nativity, Trinity’s annual Twelfth Night Festival has established itself as one of the high points of the New York musical season; indeed, it was after a performance in last year’s festival that the New York Times declared: “A strong contender for the 2015 classical music honors has already appeared.” Subtitled “Time’s Arrow” in tribute to Trinity’s characteristic juxtaposition of the ancient with the modern, this winter’s festival features Wachner’s leadership of the Choir of Trinity Wall Street and NOVUS NY in the New York premiere of The National Anthems, an important new Trinity co-commission from David Lang, the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer named an “American master” by the New Yorker (Jan 5). The choir also joins NOVUS NY for the U.S. premiere of Tarik O’Regan’s A Letter of Rights, a cantata commissioned to mark this year’s historic 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta (Jan 4). To honor the 80th birthday of Gerald Busby, styled “the last living Bohemian in Chelsea” (New Yorker), Wachner, NOVUS, and Avi Stein, Trinity’s Associate Organist and Chorus Master, present a program of the composer’s works featuring the world premiere of his harpsichord concerto (Jan 2). Further festival highlights include the return of Gotham Early Music Scene’s hit staging of The Play of Daniel (Jan 2 & 3) and of the Clarion Music Society, which follows its “inspired interpretation” (New York Times) of Rachmaninoff’s Vespers with performances of his other major unaccompanied choral work, the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom (Dec 31 & Jan 3).

It is also during the Twelfth Night Festival that Wachner, NOVUS and the choir present the world premiere performance of a new mass by Daniel Felsenfeld (Dec 30). This is the first of six 21st-century takes on the traditional Mass to be produced by “MASS REIMAGININGS,” Trinity’s long-term commissioning project, designed to enrich both the concert and liturgical choral repertoire. For the second, Trinity teams up with Zimbabwean composer Netsayi and her band Black Pressure to perform the world premiere of her new mass at the Trinity Institute annual theological conference “Listen for a Change: Sacred Conversations for Racial Justice” (Jan 21).

New music: on recording and at Opera America, Prototype Festival, and National SawdustHaving scored a Grammy nomination together for their recording of Handel’s Israel in Egypt, Wachner and the Choir of Trinity Wall Street can soon be heard alongside the Bang on a Can All-

Stars on the world premiere recording of Anthracite Fields. An evocation of the lives of coal-mining families in turn-of-the-century Pennsylvania, Julia Wolfe’s Pulitzer Prize-winning oratorio will be released on the Cantaloupe Music label.

In 2010, Wachner made New York City Opera history when he was selected as both conductor and composer at the company’s annual VOX contemporary opera festival, before being invited back as sole conductor of the festival in 2012. The new year brings two additional new-music milestones in the field of opera when the conductor leads NOVUS NY at VOX’s descendent, Opera America’s New Opera Showcase (Jan 18), and also in the fully-staged world premiere production of Angel’s Bone. A new work of opera-theater from Du Yun and Royce Vavrek, directed by Michael McQuilken and produced in partnership with HERE and Beth Morrison Projects, Angel’s Bone will debut in eight performances at the 2016 Prototype Festival (Jan 6–17). Other upcoming highlights for Wachner and the choir include the U.S. premiere of Tim Brady’s Symphony No. 3: Atacama with Newspeak (Oct 29) and a collaboration with NOVUS NY, the progressive string ensemble 1B1 and composers Lang and Paola Prestini for a new live-scoring of Academy Award-winning film The Great Beauty (Nov 13). Both events help celebrate the launch of new Brooklyn art space National Sawdust.

At Lincoln Center, the Met Museum, and beyondOn tour, Wachner and the Choir of Trinity Wall Street present their uniquely developed techniques in contrapuntal improvisation at Boston’s National Convention of the American Choral Directors Association (Feb 12); take their esteemed Bach cantata interpretations to Montreal’s Salle Bourgie (April 24); and return to California’s Berkeley Festival and Exhibition for a program of Burgundian music from the 15th and 16th centuries (June 7). During the holiday season, they also pair David Lang’s Little Match Girl Passion with Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (Dec 23), and rejoin the Trinity Baroque Orchestra at Lincoln Center for what Time Out New York has named “New York’s finest annual presentation of Handel’s Messiah” (Dec 17).

About Trinity Wall StreetOne of the oldest and most vibrant Episcopal parishes, Trinity Wall Street is located in the heart of Manhattan’s Financial District, where it has created a dynamic home for music. Serving as director of Trinity’s Music and the Arts Program – as well as principal conductor of the Choir of Trinity Wall Street, the period-instrument Trinity Baroque Orchestra, and contemporary-music ensemble-in-residence NOVUS NY – Julian Wachner also oversees all liturgical, professional and community music and arts programming at Trinity Church and St. Paul’s Chapel. Music at Trinity ranges from large-scale oratorios to chamber music, and from intimate a cappella singing to jazz improvisation. Many concerts at Trinity Wall Street are professionally filmed and webcast live at http://www.trinitywallstreet.org/videos.
