In this section, you will explore the Northern Quebec region. You are required to symbolize and identify First Nation and Inuit communities. You will also explore the ecozones that are within the project area.

7. Add the data FirstNation_Inuit_Communities.txt to your map.

Tutorial Connection: Mapping your Data, Part B

8. Symbolize the points by using unique symbols to differentiate the First Nation Cree communities from the Inuit communities by colours of your choice.

Tutorial Connection: Mapping your Data, Part C

9. Click on the bookmark Northern Quebec.

Q1 Explore the First Nation Cree and Inuit communities of the James Bay and Northern Quebec region. Identify 5 First Nation Cree communities and 5 Inuit communities of the region. Include First Nation Cree economic activities in your answer.

10. Now that you have identified and symbolized the First Nation and Inuit communities of the region, explore the area most affected by the hydroelectric station developments. If necessary, return to the Northern Quebec map extent.

11. Change the basemap layer to Imagery. Use the pan and zoom tools to discover and explore the hydroelectric stations. Next, explore the ecozones of the region.

Q2 Identify the ecozone where the project occurred. Identify other provinces that fall within this ecozone and describe its habitat. A hyperlink for more information on the ecozone is provided within the pop-up.

12. Turn off the Ecozones layer and change the basemap to National Geographic.

Part C: Analyzing Imagery over TimeIn this section, you are required to use the ChangeMatters application to analyze the project area before and after its construction. Do not close ArcGIS Online during this stage of the assignment.

13. In a new tab or browser window, open the following Web URL:http://changematters.esri.com/Compare?im=Infrared&sy=1975&ey=1990&center=-8496755.61809916,7058970.889755763&level=7

14. A side by side comparison of the project area from years 1975-1990 is displayed.

Tutorial Connection: ChangeMatters

Q3 Explore, compare and contrast the image maps. Explain how these changes may have impacted the physical and human environments of the area.

15. Leave open the ChangeMatters application and return to the ArcGIS Online Map Viewer.

16. Select the bookmark James Bay.

Q4 Identify the hydroelectric station of the project that appears to have the greatest impact on its surrounding area. Utilize both the ChangeMatters image maps and James Bay Project Web map. Explain your choice.

17. Change the colour, shape and size of the point to differentiate it from the other stations. You may also add a description.

18. Print a copy of the map to hand in with your assignment. Ensure the area of focus is the hydroelectric station you have identified. You may also consider selecting a different basemap.

19. Close the tabs or windows for the print selection and ChangeMatters application. Do not close the ArcGIS-James Bay Project tab or window.

Part D: Relationships and ConclusionsIn this section, you are required to explore relationships and form conclusions about the project.

20. Return to the Northern Quebec map extent. Explore each of the following map layers in the areas surrounding the hydroelectric stations: the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, Canada’s Population Change 2001-2006 and Canada’s Median Household Income.

Q5 Based on the agreement, population and income change in these areas, discuss whether the surrounding communities benefitted economically from the developments.

Extension ExerciseThis exercise explores the second largest hydro development in Canada, Churchill Falls Hydroelectric Plant, and its impact on surrounding communities and territories.

21. Click the Newfoundland and Labrador bookmark.

22. Explore only Churchill Falls Hydroelectric Plant, Newfoundland First Nation Communities and Ecozones.

Q6 Identify and describe the ecozones and communities of the area.

23. Turn off the Ecozones layer. Separately, explore Canada Population Change 2001-2006 and Canada Median Household Income.

Q7 Analyze and discuss the impact of the station using ChangeMatters http://changematters.esri.com/Compare?im=Infrared&sy=1975&ey=1990&center=-7158270.629023616,7095555.305179239&level=13. Specifically, discuss whether it appears to have affected the habitat and surrounding First Nation communities. Include your observations on the population and income changes. Research information on the Churchill Falls Hydroelectric Plant to determine the correct answer.
