Where does the water in my drink come from? Throughout this term, we will be learning about rivers, the water cycle, ice, changing state and extreme weather. We will be writing an explanation text about the journey of a river and creating some water inspired poetry! We will be taking a trip to the River Otter to have a look at different features of the river. Geography The children will be identifying the longest rivers in the world and in the UK. Over the next six weeks the class will be understanding key vocabulary and will be able to identify features on the local river trip. At the end of the sequence, the class will invite you in to showcase and share their work. Understanding physical development, health and wellbeing We will be looking at REAL PE skills which are focusing on creativity in team sports. Children will work on different activities to improve their balance and core strength. We will be applying these skills in netball throughout the term. Understanding English, communication and languages We will be looking at different poems linked to water and creating our own water themed shape poem using metaphors. The children will write an explanation report about the journey of a river. Children will learn about parenthesis, conjunction adverbs and tenses. Understanding the arts Who was Monet? What did he do? How is his work recognisable? What skills did he use to create his work? The class will be creating their own Monet inspired work. Information Please sign reading diaries weekly. Year 6 need to read at least 5 times a week at home and get their journals signed weekly. PE is on Monday and a Tuesday. Homework is given out on a Friday and needs to be returned by Wednesday. It would be greatly appreciated if all clothing and drinks bottles could be named for easier identification. Vocabulary Some words we are learning this term are: Tributary, source, mouth, estuary, delta, confluence Ask us what they mean and if we can use them in a sentence! We will be learning how to use protractors, compasses and other measuring equipment to construct shapes; learning all about reflection and translation and looking at co-ordinates. We will continue to work on our number work and try some algebra! This term we are wondering: Why do rivers look the way they do? Where does the water come from? What are the longest rivers in the word? What happens when water has nowhere to go? How have people been inspired by rivers? What are the features of my local river? What is a flash flood?
