Overview
Introduction► Located in north western part of Karnataka► Divided into 5 admininstrative divisions-
Vijayapura, Basavana-Bagewadi, Indi,Muddebihal and Sindagi
► Was part of the Chalukyan dynasty and hasbeen capital of the Adil Shahi dynasty (1489-1686),
► In 1686 A.D., the Moguls under Aurangzeboverpowered the city of Vijayapura and ended200 year old Adil Shah dynasty -- a kingdomthat patronized arts and crafts and build theeloquent city of Vijayapura.
► Today the district is dotted with medievalmonuments, and has legacy of famous andunique form of Islamic architecture andancient monuments; making it significanttourist destination in the state
► The district is occupied by three types of soilsviz. Black soils, Red sandy soils and mixedsoils
The foundations of historic city laid during the reign of the Chalukyan dynasty ofKalyani between the tenth and eleventh centuries. In ancient era, it was called asVijayapura or the City of Victory. Vijayapura experienced a great burst of architecturalactivity under the Adil Shahi dynasty. Today the district has over 50 mosques andmore than 20 tombs. The district is famous for Tombs, Monuments and Temples;making it splendid example of Indo-Saracenic architecture

► Urbanisation in the district is 23% compared to 39% in thestate
► Vijayapura is an agrarian economy with over 40% of the netarea under cultivation, which is high, since 50% of the land isunder forests.
► Agriculture and allied industries have the highest contributionto the GSDP for the district.
