Winter Calendar 7

From the Volunteer

Coordinator Happy New Year! I hope you’ve

all had a joyful—and restful—

holiday season! You deserve it

after the fall we’ve had. Packed

with programs and events, from the Knitting

Conference in October, to Yulefest in

November, to a visit from the Norwegian

ambassador in December, and lots in between,

we kept everyone quite busy! We can once

again boast that Yulefest was our best ever, in

terms of visitors (8,000 over 2 days); volunteers

(275 on the weekend alone, which doesn’t

include the many bakers, decorators, set up

and prep volunteers we had as well); and

dollars (netting over $105,000). It was a

tremendous success, and would not have been

possible without your support on every level.

Thank you!

And we’ve already launched right into an

exciting new year. Aside from our regular

programs and events, Mostly Nordic, Soup and

Cinema, Wallenberg, etc., we are also excited

about new First Thursday After Hours event

which will begin in April, and feature of variety

of programs, entertainment, guided etc. This

will be a fun opportunity for volunteers looking

for some evening opportunities, or a regular

monthly commitment. We’d love to hear any

ideas for how to make this program a great

success.

Dates have already been set for our annual

special events, and as these are growing in

scope, our volunteer needs are growing as well!

Please be sure to save the dates! The Northern

Lights Auktion will take place on April 18, and

the Auktion Committee is actively seeking new

members. Viking Days will take place on

August 15 and 16, and Yulefest, the weekend

before Thanksgiving, on November 21 and 22.

RECYCLING

UPDATE

Please be sure to sort all refuse

when volunteering at the Museum!

Starting January 1, 2015 the City of Seattle will start fining

businesses whose garbage contains more than 10%

recyclables or food waste, so it will be especially important for

all of us to be mindful of what we toss in NHM’s waste bins.

Compostable paper, including food-soiled pizza boxes, paper

napkins and paper towels, will no longer be permitted in the

garbage. There will be well marked bins and signs throughout

the Museum, so help us out by sorting and disposing of all your

refuse in the proper receptacle.

We thank you for your cooperation!

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE As you know, the Nordic Heritage Museum is moving to a new building on NW Market Street, walking

distance from the Burke-Gilman Trail, Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, and all of the great shops and

restaurants of downtown Ballard. There are many steps in the process of permitting, designing and

constructing our new home, but we’re well on our way!

The total scope of the project costs $45 million. So far we have raised over $28 million, meaning we’re

about two-thirds of the way there! We own the land where the new building will be, and we’re working

with Ralph Appelbaum Associates on finalizing exhibition design and permitting with the City of Seattle.

Construction plans for the new building are in the works, and we’re already dreaming up thrilling new

ideas for exhibitions, programs and community events. We have a fundraising goal of $15 million, which

will keep us on schedule to open the new Nordic Museum in early 2018.

To find out more about the Capital Campaign, or what you can do to help, contact Campaign

Associate, Stephanie Maurer at (206) 789-5707 x32, or [email protected].

STAFF UPDATE Welcome Bob Smith,

Custodian Bob joined us in November, just

before Yulefest and has proven to

be an invaluable part of the team.

Please make him feel welcome!

HALLOWEEN DINNER HIGHLIGHTS

Barbara Paquette wearing foxes; Kerri Keil as Twister, and Julie Coulter as a properly accessioned artifact; Torberg

Eriksen, Bill Weed, Barb Johnson and Penny Barker; and a full house for dinner! A great time had by all! Thank You!

CALLING ALL KNITTERS!

We are still looking for volunteers with knitting

expertise to be showcased in our Gift Shop! If

you are interested in consigning a knitted piece

in our gift shop, please submit one item of your

choosing to Pamela Brooks by January 30th.

Include a brief description of the item, such as the

yarn used, stitch type, tradition, and the price you

wish to sell your piece for. (Remember we will

double that to arrive at a retail price).

Also include a little bit of information about

yourself perhaps including your ethnic heritage,

how many years you have been knitting, how many

cats you have, in what capacity you volunteer for

the Museum, or anything else you would like to

share.

We hope to showcase all the knitted goods in the

gift shop throughout the winter. You can pick up

your piece at any time if it doesn’t sell and will be

paid promptly if it does!

If you have any questions,

please contact our Finance

Manager Pamela Brooks at

(206) 789-5707 x28 and

happy knitting to you all!

In Memory We fondly remember our dear friends who passed away this fall. Each was a strong support-

er of the Museum and worked hard to advance its mission in different ways. We cherish

their commitment, celebrate their contribuons, and will miss them dearly.

If you have photographs or memories oft hose who have passed on, please consider sending them to me. I

will create a slide who in remembrance to present at the Spring Volunteer Appreciation Dinner.
