Asphalt shinglesAn asphalt shingle roof is completely waterproof and highly durable. Asphalt is one of the world’s most widely used waterproofing materials.

CertainTeed asphalt shingles are composed of a strong fibre-glass mat base. Asphalt is applied over this and ceramic-coated mineral granules are embedded in the water-resistant asphalt. These ceramic granules come in a wide range of colours and provide excellent UV resistance.

During SUMMER months, ventilation helps keep a roof

space cool. It helps prevent hot, moist summer air from

distorting the roof structure. It also stops shingles from

deteriorating prematurely. What’s more, fresh air in the roof

space makes a home much easier to cool, which can result

in lower energy costs.

In WINTER months, ventilation helps reduce internal

moisture. It stops water from backing up under shingles,

damaging insulation, and rotting the roof structure itself. It

also helps prevent ice dams from forming. Ice dams occur

in areas where snowfall and cold temperatures are common

and pose a special problem because they prevent melting

water from running off the roof. They can even cause leaks

inside the home, resulting in structural damage.

SuperStrand Sarking SubstrateThe structural integrity of Viking CertainTeed asphalt shingles is enhanced through the installation of a treated timber sarking substrate onto which they are fastened.SuperStrand Sarking is an H3.1 treated strand board designed and manufactured in New Zealand specifically as a substrate for asphalt shingle roofs. SuperStrand Sarking’s benefits far outweigh alternative substrates.

LightweightViking Roofspec’s pitched roofing systems installed over SuperStrand Sarking with a total weight of up to 25kg/m2 may be considered ‘light-weight’ for design purposes in accordance with NZS3604.

A more rigid roof SuperStrand is more rigid and spans further than plywood, therefore, minimising: the propensity for the board to sag between trusses; the visibility of sheet joins; and any unevenness in the structure, creating a more rigid, flatter and sharper looking roof.

Safety This durable and light-weight substrate, braces the entire building; negating the need for extra structural requirements for heavy-weight roofing materials.
