Vilanova Grand Marina Barcelona, The Magazine

DEAR FRIENDIt doesn’t seem that long ago that Vilanova Grand Marina – Barcelona, at the very beginning, was just an optimistic project to go ahead. It all began in 2005, planning and designing every detail to crea-te the first marina in the Mediterranean specialized exclusively in superyachts, combining great docking facilities and a technical area. As if taking care of a baby, we took care of every need, every detail, every client’s request to make Vilanova Grand Marina – Barcelona the perfect home port. Today, after 7 years of incredible and passionate effort and work, all the team is proud of it. Every day in our marina you can feel a friendly at-mosphere in the air, dedicated customer service, nice staff and lots of enthusiasm. Now, we have the opportunity to transmit the values of Vilanova Grand Marina – Barcelona, and of cour-se, we really want to share them with you. “Highlights” magazine by Vilanova Grand Marina- Barcelona wants to establish a contact to keep you informed of our social activities, the yachting indus-try facts from the perspective of high-level profes-sionals, curiosities, gourmet tips…and much more.

THEWINEroute

9

Vilanova Grand Marina Barcelona, The Magazine

Just in the back of Vilanova Grand Marina – Barcelona and inspired by the so-called “Wine Roads” that exist in the rest of the world, there is the first wine tourism project in all of Spain to offer a linear route of great historical and cultural value, starting in the vineyards and ending at the coast.

When La Carretera del Vi was launched in June 2015, it became the first Wine Road in all of Spain. This linear itinerary follows a well-defined, pre-exis-ting route flanked by wineries and other places of interest. The route is about 40 km long, running from Sant Martí Sarroca to Sitges via the towns of Pacs del Penedès, Vilafranca del Penedès, Olèrdola, Canyelles and Sant Pere de Ribes. The main route branches off at several points, depending on the wi-neries and other sites one wishes to visit.

Named La Carretera del Vi it retraces the old trade route that connected the inland region of the Pene-dès with the coast. The Romans used this road to bring the wine produced in the area to the rest of the world.

The route comprises several wineries that have for-med an association, including Mas Bertran Viticul-tors, Rovellats, Parés Baltà, Colet, Bodegas Torres,

Heretat Mas Tinell, Pinord, Torreblanca, Finca Vila-dellops, Clos Lentiscus, Torre del Veguer and Puig Batet. The main goal of this iniciative is to help boost tourism while protecting the region in order to conserve the beauty of its landscape and its his-torical value.

Much like the world’s most famous and renowned Wine Roads, La Carretera del Vi consists of wine tourism activities jointly organized by these twelve wineries, which vary in size and style. In addition, the route includes several sites of particular histo-rical and architectural interest, such as ancient Ibe-rian ruins, castles or Modernist houses. A variety of high-quality gastronomic options complete the program.

themed weekends. In other words, visitors will be able to participate in activities related to the same theme at different wineries.

Another option will provide visitors with a series of perks when visiting the wineries.

La Carretera del Vi follows the old roads that con-nected Sant Martí Sarroca with Vilafranca del Pe-nedès, and the latter with Sitges. Although initially conceived as a car driving route, the plan for the near future is to create an alternative route specifi-cally designed to do by foot or by bicycle.

10

PASSION FOR OUR LANDHIGHLIGHTS #01

La Carretera del Vi is inspired by the Wine Roads found in places like California or New Zealand. Quite possibly it is one of the oldest, because it goes back to what once was a trade and transport route for wine and other goods during the time of the Roman Empire. What makes the project par-ticularly interesting is the wide variety of wineries and tourist attractions along the way, combined into a single route that is very easy to follow due to its linear design.

The joint promotion of La Carretera del Vi by the member wineries will result in a yearly program of

and its fruit: from the knowledge of traditional winemaking methods to the use of new resources and new technologies. After a long and not always easy journey, today the wines of the Penedès are known, respected and enjoyed around the world.

The Xarel·lo grapeXarel·lo is the most widely planted variety in the DO Penedès with over 7000 hectares under vine. It adapts well to the terrors and climates of the Pe-nedès. It is a rustic plant with steady growth that shoots early in the spring. Resistant to both drought and heat, production and quality are well balanced year after year, improving in old vines.Unoaked Xarel·lo wines are smooth, medium bodied wines with a silky character; fruity and aromatic, they have good acidity and an excellent alcohol level.Xarel·lo based wines designed for ageing are full bodied, warm, long wines, with a mineral finish and a marked varietal expression heightened through maceration with the skins, fermentation in barrels or cement eggs, ageing on the lees, etc.

D.O. PENEDÈSFrom the inland hills to the Mediterranean, from the Llobregat river to the Gaià. Land and sunshine, vine-yards and wine... in harmonious balance to nourish the quality of the DO Penedès wines. The Penedès region is wide and open, covering a long strip of land between the sea and the moun-tains, half-way between Barcelona and Tarragona. The diversity of the DO Penedès’ wines is based on the singularity of the region. A thousand tastes, aro-mas, bodies and structures... are the result of these differences in climate, territory and the variety of the soils that make up the region, marked by the green of the hills and valleys or the blue of the Mediterranean.

The culture, the character of its inhabitants and its history all make the Penedès a reflection of the little pleasures in life that should be enjoyed to the full. The ideas and the constant search for perfection are the keys that have guided Penedès’ winemakers in their efforts.Generation after generation, the men and women of the Penedès have passed on their love for the vine

YACHT CHARTER

Is the founder and managing director of Network Marine Consultants which was established in 1983. Since inception Network has specialised almost exclusively in general administration and consultancy relating to all aspects of the yachting industry.

Patricia is an acknowledged expert in all areas of yachting in Spain and, as such, is often invited to speak at major international conferences on the subject.

She is also founder and secretary of the Sail Training Charity, "Fundacion de Joves Navegants de Balears", based in the Balearic Islands and established in 1993.

Just a few years ago Spain was in virtual economic meltdown. Now its exit from the downturn has been confirmed with seven consecutive quarters of GDP growth and rapidly-dropping unemployment rates. The nautical sector suffered as much as others, compounded by some archaic and unjust taxation issues, but much water has gone under the bridge and the tide is turning – fast.Giant steps have been taken and the brakes are fir-mly off Spain’s yachting sector. In October 2013, authorities confirmed that the 15 metre ceiling for claiming exemption from the infamous 12% matri-culation tax had been removed. Then in Septem-ber 2014, non-EU-flagged yachts were given the green light to charter in Balearic waters. Spain is now very much open for fair and commercially-via-ble business and word is spreading. Since October 2013 the number of large yachts visiting the nation has increased fourfold and, with the current fleet of 5,000 superyachts expected to grow by 60% within

Patricia Bullock

the next 20 years to around 11,000, Spain’s nautical future looks to be very bright.

Statistics from Spanish marine trade association, ANEN, support this sentiment of a flourishing in-dustry. In its 2014 review, it stated that Spain’s re-creational yachting market grew almost 10% after six years of decline. The greatest increase in yacht registrations happened in the higher LOAs, with the 16-metre-plus market (52-foot) growing by 48.2% in 2014. Taking into account just charter boat registra-tions of 16-metre-plus, this figure jumps higher to 157.14% year-on-year. The Balearics still dominate Spain’s recreational yachting market taking 14.78% of boat registrations in 2014 nudging Barcelona into second place with 10.75%. Moving into 2015, ANEN has already reported a 13.61% increase in ya-cht registrations over 2014 for the period January to May – a figure that leaps to 52% when taking charter yachts in isolation.

Spain's Green roots start to flourish

13

Vilanova Grand Marina Barcelona, The Magazine

The original and the best, Spain is firmly established as a Mediterranean cruising ground. Major city ma-rinas such as Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca offer Michelin-starred gastronomy, inspiring architecture, designer shopping experiences and a vibrant cultu-ral scene. Meanwhile there’s the razzmatazz of Puer-to Banús and Marbella, the clean turquoise waters and feet-in-sand restaurants of Formentera and the world-famous high-end nightlife in Ibiza.

In my personal experience, every person who has visited Spain, whether yacht owners, charter clients or major brokers, have all been very generous with their compliments.

A vast choice of marinas (Spain has almost 380 lei-sure ports on its near 5,000km of coastline) and shi-pyards add to the country’s appeal, many with first-class services and installations. A growing number are able to accommodate the world’s largest super-yachts.

Having processed yacht charter licences day in, day out, for more than 30 years, Network Marine Consul-tants is amongst the most experienced in its field and has just one final piece of advice for those who plan to prepare their yacht for charter in Spain.

Caveat emptor’ is Latin for ‘let the buyer be aware’, something that we’re keen to get across in relation

to the world of superyacht charter licences. Char-ter licences are a complex matter in Spain, changes to legislation and taxation happen frequently, but if you stay abreast of the situation there’s no reason why the process cannot be straightforward.

If your superyacht flies an EU flag and is registered to an EU company, it will not attract future inspec-tions, withholding taxes or create personal tax liabi-lities for local tax agents. If your superyacht flies an offshore or ‘tax haven’ flag and is registered to an offshore or ‘tax haven’ company, it could become complicated to conduct commercial charter activi-ty within the EU. But anything is possible, Spain’s doors are open to charter, and we want to send out that message loud and clear.

SHARING A DRINK WITH...HIGHLIGHTS #01

Why this passion for the sea?

I decided that I wanted to be a Ship Captain when I was about 8 years old. I cannot explain whe-re the idea came from, there are no other seafarers in my family and we didn’t live near the sea. Perhaps I saw something on TV or read a book that inspired me. From that time I never deviated from that idea. At the age of 13 I went to a Nautical High School called Trinity House to prepare myself for a career as an Officer Cadet in the Merchant Navy. One of the things I like about yachting is the wide variety of people who find their way into it from different backgrounds. Although I took a very focussed and linear route

INTERVIEWCaptain David AtkinsonInterview by Elisabeth Campà, Vilanova Grand Marina Barcelona PR Manager

there are many ways to arrive at the same destination.

How did you get into yachting?

I had taken a 3 year break from commercial shipping to try life li-ving and working ashore. I ended up opening a small Computer shop. I enjoyed it although it was hard work and not very rewarding financially. One of my friends from Nautical College had been to An-tibes on vacation and discovered the yacht scene. He convinced me to come out to Palma to take a look at the yachting world. I was hooked and left the business with my partner to take a job as 2nd mate on a yacht and have never looked back.

What are for you the most appre-ciated values of being a captain?

Obviously good seamanship ex-perience and skills are a must. Ship handling although very im-portant is only a small part of the job. Most of a captain’s work is pa-perwork and administration. The captain has to provide a structu-red and supportive framework for the crew to work under whe-re everyone knows their role and place in the team and feels secure that the others are all doing their

part too. Providing good leaders-hip requires leading by example, taking time to understand the pro-blems of each crew member and offer guidance. Spending time tra-ining others will be rewarded with a strong supportive team. Some people make the mistake of trying to get respect by intimidation or fear. I believe respect and trust has to be hard earned by being fair and honest.I think nobody has said it better than Rudyard Kipling:

“If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you, if you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, but make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, or being hated, don’t give way to hating, and yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise”

Your best and worst experience at sea.

My first winter season in yachting was spent in the Seychelles. It is a time I remember fondly, being in such a beautiful tropical envi-ronment with a great group of people. Such a difference from

the

15

Vilanova Grand Marina Barcelona, The Magazine

to go away for a few days and not worry about the yacht being safe. Some marinas I have used can get very badly affected by bad wea-ther. A reliable power supply and internet link are a must. It is also good to have leisure facilities for the crew close at hand so that they can use their free time effectively. A bored crew is bad for the yachts moral and performance.Good travel links and services/supply infrastructure are vital to allow the yacht to be properly maintained. The availability of re-asonably priced accommodation for contractors etc. is a good asset too.

Which are the values that a good crewmember must have?

There are many qualities that combine to make a great crew member. 50% of the profile is ha-ving the right at-titude. This means thinking more about what you can do for the ya-cht than what the yacht can do for you. It means being a team player who works well with others and can

the endless watches in the Mer-chant Navy. I have had a few less pleasant experiences. Perhaps the worst one was being Cadet on an old cargo ship that broke down on passage to New Zealand and was adrift for three days in a force 11 storm. We were beam on the wa-ves and rolling up to 45 degrees at times. The heavy lift cargo in the holds started to break loose and we spent every waking hour trying to lash it down again befo-re it smashed its way through the ships side.

The crew had donned their life jackets and refused to leave the mess room so it was down to the Officers and Cadets to deal with the situation. Thankfully we didn’t roll over and eventually the Engi-neers managed to restart the en-gine and get us back on our way to New Zealand. You can’t ima-gine how good that first beer in Auckland tasted.

What do you enjoy most of your day a day on board?

I think most crew would agree that the highlight of the day is the won-derful lunch prepared by our two chefs. We have to admit to get-ting very spoiled by them. Apart from that I really enjoy an evening stroll along the beach front befo-re sunset, it’s my favorite time of day. It is great to have the beach so close by.

What do you expect from a marina to consider it as a home port?

It is important to have a very safe harbour that does not experience weather extremes. I like to be able

handle stressful situations while remaining calm. Being self-moti-vated with pride in a job well done and desire to constantly improve are good traits.Of course having a good skill set and technical knowledge are im-portant but these can be learned by anyone with the right mind-set.

In your opinion, how the indus-try has evolved in recent years?

The growth in the yacht industry has led to larger and more tech-nically complex yachts. This has brought the attention of flag state authorities to the industry and led to some very needed regulation. The safety standards and working practices have improved signifi-cantly as a consequence. In some aspects I fear that the regulation has slightly exceeded the opti-mum level but it is hard to know where to stop once the fear of blame and prosecution permeates those in responsible positions. The industry has expanded at an incredible pace this has meant a large influx of new recruits. Some great people have been drawn in and are bringing a welcome con-tribution from other walks of life. Inevitably there are also a few people drawn to the promise of good salaries and a glamourous lifestyle at the owners’ expense. Those people arriving with an over developed sense of entitle-ment tend to get weeded out be-fore too long.As a whole the industry has beco-me much more professional and this is a very positive change.

INGREDIENTS:

1 kg rock fish1 Onion 1 clove of garlic1 bay leaf 50ml extra virgin Mediterranean olive oil.300 grs monk fish2 Mediterranean crayfish300 grs Vilanova prawns300grs Prades potatoes20 grs Vera paprika 1 pinch of parsley

TO MAKE:

Put the oil with the vegetables in a tall saucepan and fry gently until golden, then add the paprika and quickly cover with water to avoid it burning, then add the rock fish and leave to cook for about 45 min., then remove from the heat and leave to stand. In a clay pot that has been war-ming on the heat, put a little olive oil and once hot, add the Medi-terranean crayfish, chopped into pieces, and fry until it browns, then add the fish stock that we have strained off from the potato-es, a pinch of parsley, the monk fish cut into medium-sized pieces and leave to cook for 15 minutes, adjusting the seasoning and just before taking it off the heat, add the prawns and, with the heat of the pan everything will be perfect for eating this magnificent Medi-terranean dish.

The Ceferino Hotel & Restaurant, situated on the sea-front in Vilanova i la Geltrú, projects a family image, warm and full of charm, in Mediterranean surroundings. The story of this magnificent hotel begins at the end of the 60’s, when a young Ceferino set off from the lands of Andalusia for Catalonia, to do his military ser-vice in Mataró. When that was over, and after having been unable to get a job at the Pirelli Company in Vilanova, he started working in the hotel industry as a waiter in the town. In 1971 Ceferino acquires a charm building, installing a beau-tiful hotel, a cafeteria and a restaurant, with a solid wooden structure with large windows and skylights, flooding the locale with Mediterranean light, and with a splendid terrace surrounded by bougainvillea plant, making a magnificent bal-cony over the Mediterranean and Vilanova’s sea-front. In the business, Ceferino has always had the support of his family.

Nowadays Ceferino’s grandson Jonatan is in charge of the kitchen. After studying cookery and hotel management at the prestigious Hoffman School in Barcelona, and then honing his skills alongside the renowned chef Jean Luc Figueras, he now offers his guests a menu of products with tradition, flavours of the land and of the Mediterranean.

Ceferino’s philosophy can be summed up in the essence of Catalan and marine cuisine, combined with the finest seasonal, local products in a contemporary presentation.

The Mediterranean diet, very present within the in-house philosophy, has been handed down from generation to generation. Ceferino offers a magnificent ran-ge of fresh sea-food from Vilanova’s quayside fish market, such as crayfish, lobs-ter, goose barnacles, scallops, spider crab, whelks, razor shells, and one of our specialities, the prized Vilanova prawn.

We are recovering these age-old dishes from the traditional Catalan and fishermen’s cookbook, such as Delta rice with baby cuttlefish and artichokes, fish stews, surf and turf made with scallops and artichokes, white bean and Mediterranean crayfish casserole, fresh duck liver terrine, lobster and monk fish bouillabaisse, ‘cap y pota’ casserole, Catalan broth, garlic cod croquettes with honey and all i olli, pan-fried baby Vilanova squid, our fresh meat from the Catalan Pyrenees, char-grilled, and our excellent rustic bread, fresh from the wood-burning oven, going back to age-old baking traditions.

Professional service in the restaurant and hotel make the regulars feel at home, and new guests leave wanting to come back, an ideal that the house has created over so many decades, making guests feel completely at home.

10 wellness TIPS TO KEEP YOU HEALTHYWe often try and maintain a healthy lifestyle by following information and tips that aren’t always the most suitable ones. If we add to this stress, the daily routine, hurrying, and day-to-day obligations, the result of our objectives isn’t always what we intended.

In the following article, Saul Aparicio, the technical sports director and nutrition specialist at Aqua Gym, a sports club and spa located just a few metres from the marina, will give us 10 basic, proven tips for keeping our body healthy, avoiding all those false myths. Take note!

4Staying hydrated in one of the most important basics of a healthy lifestyle. Imagine leaving an elastic band in the sun. When we come to stretch it, it will most probably break. Some-thing similar would happen with our muscles, so we need to maintain an optimum level of hydra-tion in order to avoid muscle injuries and at the same time, reduce recovery time after vigorous exercise.

Stretches: Lately there has been much talk about stretches and their direct connectionwith sporting results. Many years ago we always ad-vised our sports people to do stretches before doing any physical exercise, and recent studies have shownthat if these initial stretches are too intense then we lose contractual capacity in our muscles, with the resulting loss of strength. The idea is to do a good warm-up and a cool-down with some good stretches, to help with that muscular recovery.

Warming up. In the jungle a lion never warms up when he has to go hunting his prey, and a similar thing happened to us humans, but wi-thout having to go hunting: however, very of-ten we’re afraid to run; this is why, in terms of training, Aqua Gym has modified its techniques in order to train in a holistic way, thinking about movement, not about muscles.

Exercise daily. Here I would like to point out that exercise can be daily whatever one’s level of physical condition, don’t think that someone who exercises daily must be a professional. Your trainer will decide on the level of intensity your daily exercise routine should have and will pre-pare you so that you have optimum recovery.

Get 8 hours’ sleep a day. Recovery, along with diet, are the two most important things for health, just as important, or even more so, than exercise itself. Those 8 hours of rest will help us regenerate our bodies, so that next day we can train with the necessary intensity.

Eat vegetables, have a varied diet. In terms of diet it is very important to maintain a balanced level of food and not to base our diet on just one type of nutrients; above all, don’t believe in miracle diets. We know that not everyone reacts the same to different types of diet, so for this reason it is fundamental that training and diet are designed for you.

10

Seek professional advice, so that the type of exercise adapts to your objectives. This basic point is key so that our health isn’t put at risk at any time; many of those who go to sport cen-tres practice self-training, they look for routines online, they watch videos on Youtube, but they don’t bear in mind the values of basic perfor-mance, nor resting times, muscle adaptations, O2max volume, pulse rate, etc. These values are key when adapting these exercises.

Increase intensity progressively, day by day.If we’ve never driven a F1, we won’t go out onto the track to improve on Lewis Hamilton’s times; it highly likely that we wouldn’t even make the first bend. This is why it’s fundamental to listen to our trainer to obtain our goals, but always with progressive exercises.

Counteract sore muscles. Sore muscles are a clear indicator of the intensity of our training. We should never start working if we have never exercised in a brusque manner; for the first few days we’re looking for a sensation that feels like we’ve made hardly any effort and then bit by bit, we’ll increase the intensity, in order to avoid sore muscles.

Food supplements: In the majority of cases we can correct this type of food supplements me-rely through a gooddiet. In some cases where the sportsperson needs to improve performan-ce, orisn’t recovering in a satisfactory way, we can use some kind of supplement, but always combining this with a healthy diet and the exer-cises that our trainer has prepared for us.
