Bert Robinson has been coaching Tewin’s Tennis players for over 30 years, up until last year he was doing 40 hours a week coaching which was cut down to 30 hours last year. He works every day except Saturday from 8.30am to 11.00am and 3.30pm to 7.00pm; he does have Toby helping on Fridays when they coach 40 kids. He has also been in charge of maintenance for the last 20 years and has ensured that the courts remain in great condition being resurfaced every 8 years.

With his 75th birthday next March and not wanting work through another cold winter, Bert has decided it is fi nally time to retire and his last day will be on 21st October.

Originally from London, Bert moved to Tewin in 1985 and was introduced to the Tewin Tennis club shortly after, and he signed up for some group lessons with his wife Cheryl. Around 1987, the club tennis coach moved on to a larger club and Bert was asked to take over so he qualifi ed as a LTA coach and approached the committee about becoming the club coach. His application was approved and he started coaching part time in the village while working as a sales rep, which he did for 10 years. He enjoyed it so much that he packed in his job and started coaching full time teaching short tennis in the village hall to 5 and 6 year olds and on the court to older children and adults.

Bert is well known in the village and has coached three generations of families over the years. He has kept in contact with many of the children that he coached and this year he has been invited to three of the grown up children’s weddings.

Bert is also involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and is currently helping three teenagers with a bronze award. He also helps with a leader’s course where teenagers come and get work experience helping with the organisation at the club, which they can then put on their CV.

Bert told us, ”Tennis has been my life and I have loved all the years I’ve had at the club, it has kept me fi t and I rarely get ill, I use to suffer from Asthma before I started coaching which doesn’t

affect me as much now. The local village club has some great members; I think there must be around 120 families. There is a great committee who organise social events throughout the year and the club house was refurbished last year.”

When asked what he will be doing now, Bert told us, “I would like to spend more time with my grandchildren, although I will still play a game of tennis occasionally. I enjoy painting with water colours and am interested in history so recently joined the national trust. I have to thank my wife Cheryl who has looked after me all these years doing my paperwork and keeping me organised, it will be nice to be able to spend more time with her.”

New members are always welcome at Tewin Tennis Club, if you would like to fi nd out more, visit www.t-t-c.org.uk or contact [email protected] for membership queries.

WELLbEInG

Since my new, and improved, website is now up and running I thought it would be

nice to tell you about the range of positive audio recordings available to listen to at home.

The idea originally came to me when aps came out. I thought I would like to investigate and do one but I wasn’t sure quite how. That was about 2 years ago and since that time this has been in the back of my mind and I am still progressing to that point.

You see in my job my voice is my main tool. What I say during a consultation, either in, or out, of hypnosis, can help and influence people in a variety of positive ways. The sooner my clients get the change they want the better, and so over the years I have been supplying them with their own personalised recordings to listen to between consultations to embed the work we have done. They have all enjoyed this and inspired me to take it a step further.

So, after learning more about voice recording and testing myself in many ways, I have recorded a number of professional mp3’s and CD’s with a background of soft music, that anyone can buy, listen to at home, and feel a real difference as a result. Sort of like a mini hypnosis session for anyone to have at their fingertips at any time, night or day. The idea is to build yourself a little library of recordings you can listen to which improve

your state of well being and build your confidence. All with a small outlay of £7.99 and taking a mere 22 minutes of your time. (such as during a train journey, an afternoon rest, a lunchbreak, and even in bed)

The sleep series are just what you need if you cannot sleep. There are two very different sleep recordings and, there’s one to stop teeth grinding at night, too. Another for stopping snoring is in the pipeline. You listen to these when you are ready to go to sleep.

The healing series relax and stimulate the body’s healing processes. Each is different and can be listened to at home, in hospital, when having a procedure or treatment of any kind, (such as chemo or IVF), and even in the dentist chair. Listen often during the day, they will relax wonderfully and may help to lessen the need for painkillers.

The confidence series give you a kick start. These can be listened to when you first awaken, during a 22 minute break at home, or at work, on a commute (as long as you are a passenger), and to brighten you prior to an evening out.

Go and have a look under www.marilyntuck.co.uk. There are some on the home page and more under hypnotherapy recordings. There is a ‘listen to’ introduction to each series, and a 2 minute sample of each audio. These are a good investment to improve yourself and cost a fraction of the price of a consultation. Good as a gift, too.

Naturally, if you have a deep issue, and want personalised help, a consultation would be more benefi cial, phone 07962 811907.

What about some self improvement at home? The fun in Marilyn Tuck’s work is the variety. People see her for all sorts of things: snoring, teeth grinding, and sleeping; fl ying, needles, thunder and claustro phobias; fi nding, mending and improving relationships; and, as she mentioned before, emotional stressy stuff that brings on anxiety, anger, sadness, comfort eating, drinking and smoking. Often entwined these can be unpicked and leave a

person really pleasantly changed within a few weeks, or a few months. The trick is motivation, want to do it, ask for help, and then let it happen.

Allwood Automobiles is a local car dealership owned by Alan Woodcock who has been in the motor trade for 30 years. Alan started in the

trade in 1977 for a Vauxhall main dealer. After becoming a manager in just four years, he ventured out on his own trading cars from his home in Enfield. As this business grew, he needed a showroom to showcase cars and found a site in Enfield. As the business became more successful, a bigger site was needed so the business moved to a 45 car showroom in Waltham Cross and has been there for almost 20 years now.

Alan was in business with a partner until January this year when he took over, starting a new company and Allwood Autos was born. Despite the recession the business has been really successful, selling 300 cars in the first 6 months.

Allwood stocks a range of cars, from Classic, Prestige and Sports cars through to Economical cars in low insurance groups for youngsters. Alan always aims to be very competitive while offering a good quality service

with backup. All cars are HPI checked and come with a three month warranty. Extended warranties are available and all cars are taken in as part exchange, whether trading up or down.

All stock comes either from main dealers or from the general public rather than from auctions and cars are fully checked prior to going on sale.

If you are thinking of buying a new car and would like to part exchange your old car, Alan is happy to visit you at a convenient place and time to value your car and discuss your requirements.

Although the garage is in Waltham Cross, Alan has been living in Tewin for the last 9 years. He has bought and sold a lot of cars in the local area. In fact, he has also sold cars all over the world thanks to the internet and can arrange shipping overseas if required.

Alan has had a real passion for cars for as long as he can remember, especially classic cars and he is always happy to discuss your requirements and advise you on buying and selling cars. He is also happy for people to come and inspect cars at the showroom before buying.

the showroom in Waltham cross is open monday - Friday 9.30am - 6.00pm and 9.30am - 5.00pm on saturday. sunday viewings are available by appointment and all major cards are takenFor more information, you can contact alan on 07747 604 760 or at [email protected]. alternatively you can visit the virtual showroom at www.allwoodautos.co.uk which is updated on a daily basis.

MJS Events is a Mobile Disco service specialising in wedding receptions. The business is run by Jose Saavedra, a corporate professional, who

has been a DJ for nearly 20 years playing at clubs and venues in the UK and overseas. Jose believes that most people’s perception of a DJ is someone who is unreliable, who will just turn up unprepared, play what they like and talk nonsense on the microphone just to earn a few extra pounds at the weekend.

Couples need more than this. They want their wedding day to run smoothly with all the guests enjoying themselves. After all it is probably the most important day in their lives and everyone should have fun.

Jose is professional and presentable, he has the creative skills of a club DJ, but with public speaking experience and people skills gained from the corporate world. He only focuses on weddings and as a result wedding guests party to his music at local venues such as Tewinbury Farm, Fanhams Hall, Hanbury Manor, Hertford Castle, Priory Barn and also at exclusive venues in London. Jose’s mixing skills and ability to read the crowd ensures that the dance floor is always busy!

All couples receive a pre-event meeting to discuss the entire day as well as the music. The details include; the requirements for the first and second dance, the background music throughout, how the couple will leave the venue and even the value Jose can add as a capable MC. This planning makes the day run smoothly and is an opportunity for Jose to share the expertise he has gained from hundreds of wedding receptions. He takes the time to understand the couple’s requirements and this is underpinned by a contract, which provides peace of mind that he will be there, fully prepared.

Jose’s music collection covers 16,000 songs from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, Motown, Soul, Funk, Disco, Rock, Punk, Ska right through to House, R&B, Dance and today’s chart music. He is always happy to take requests on the evening.

If you book MJS events you can expect a state of the art sound and lighting setup which never fails to impress. It will create the perfect atmosphere for guests to dance the night away.

In addition to a great evening disco, MJS Events also offers an all day package. During this Jose provides background music as guests arrive at the venue, through the meal and also during the ceremony, if required. He can also act as MC introducing the couple as they arrive, introducing the speeches, making announcements throughout the day and providing a wireless microphone to use.

“Your professional and personable approach put us straight at ease and gave us one less thing to worry about and you pitched your DJ skills to suit our event perfectly.”

“I just wanted to give you a massive thanks for keeping that dance fl oor bouncing the entire night. You did an absolutely brilliant job and really contributed to what was a perfect day for Suzanne and I. Good work and thanks again Jose!”

“Hi Jose, we just wanted to say a big thank you for being MC and DJ on our wedding day. We had a fantastic day, and loved the selection of music you played!”

This month we returned to The Restaurant at Tewin Bury Farm to sample the

Tasting Menu – a 10 dish extravaganza from the a la carte menu. There is a great atmosphere in the restaurant; it is small and intimate with table’s well spaced apart and pleasant soft music playing.

The first dish of canapés consisted of Asparagus Mousse, Tempura Prawns, Beef Carpaccio, Tandoori Frogs Legs and a Cheese & Sun dried Tomato Mousse served with Melba toast. This course was a wonderful start to the meal.

The second dish was a tasty appetiser of Duck slices with Blueberry. A sweet Melon dish followed with Fondant, Prosecco Jelly, Melon Soup and Seasonal Berries.

The fourth dish was a Soft Boiled Hen’s Egg with Black Pudding, Asparagus, Pancetta, Crème Fraiche, Fine Herbs and Croutons

which was scrumptious and beautifully presented.

Spiced Crab Cakes followed with Basil, Plum Tomato, Tartar Sauce, Lemon Oil and Tomato Caviar. This dish was bursting with flavour. We then had a homemade sorbet to clear the pallet before moving on to the main course.

There was a choice of two main course dishes; Beef Fillet with Black Treacle, Smoked Potato Puree, Horseradish, Artichokes and Bone Marrow or Pan Fried Hake with Pea & Mint Croquet, Sea Kale, Soft Shell Crab, Fennel and Pancetta. The beef was cooked perfectly and the combination of accompaniments was beautifully balanced and delicious. The hake fell apart in the mouth and with the Sea Kale and crab, this offered an impressive alternative main course.

The first dessert course was Summer Pimms consisting of Pimms

Jelly, Cucumber Sorbet, Strawberry Fluid Gel, Apple Powder with a Mint Aroma. I have to say the aroma coming from the plate was quite amazing and it tasted even better.

The second dessert course was Taste of the Fairground and this really was something unique, it took me back to my childhood – Coconut Pannacotta, Marshmallow, Toffee apple, Popping Candy, Salted Popcorn Ice Cream and Candy Floss. To finish off we had coffee with Petit Fours.

I have to say we were both blown away by the whole experience; every dish was incredibly artistic with amazing attention to detail. The varied flavours in the food just worked and the service was friendly and enthusiastic without being overbearing. This is fine dining at its best on the doorstep, and I feel that the £55 per person price tag is well justified for the quality of food and the dining experience.

Dr Neel Jaiswal recently opened a new private

dental practice next to the Doctors surgery on the High street in Old Welwyn. It has been built to provide comprehensive dental care for all the family in a comfortable modern

environment. Neel has already been shortlisted for ‘most attractive practice’ and ‘practice of the year’ at the private dentistry awards 2011.

After graduating in Dentistry from Birmingham University in 1996, Neel went on to attain his Vocational Training Certificate in Norfolk. Wanting to broaden his skills, he worked as a junior Doctor in Oral and Maxillo Facial Surgery in Lincoln Hospital. He then worked in Sydney, Australia gaining a wide variety of experience. On his return he practiced in London and trained further, completing his Membership exams at the Royal College of Surgeons.

Having since attained a Certificate in Surgical Implantology at the prestigious Eastman Dental Institute, Neel has also recently attained his Masterclass Certificate in Facial Aesthetics at the Royal College of Surgeons.

He has also trained and mentored young dentists and is a member of several distinguished professional organisations. His next visit will be to do the Mastery Continuum at the Frank Spear Dental institute in Arizona, USA.

Neel believes in long term dental health by providing functional cosmetic dentistry with kindness, integrity and a genuine interest in helping his patients. This is reflected in the fact that most of his patients have joined through personal recommendations.

Neel told us, “I soon realised I enjoyed dentistry as it gave me a chance to talk with no interruptions! Seriously though it’s wonderful to help people overcome their dental fears and walk out smiling. It’s clichéd but people who smile do enjoy life more and improve the day of everyone who comes into

contact with them. I firmly believe a healthy mouth means a healthy body and this has been proven with gum disease being linked to heart disease and diabetes amongst others.

I have carefully chosen fantastic colleagues to support me. It’s an amazing opportunity to hand pick and build something wonderful. We have a great team, the best equipment and we aim to provide a great personal service building on my last five years working in Welwyn Garden City. My name is on the door for a reason – I’m accountable to you, I look forward to seeing you there and sharing my vision.”

As one of Africa’s top three safari destinations, the Kruger National Park offers

visitors the chance to experience the “Big Five”. Originally used only by hunters, the term “Big Five” refers to five of Africa’s greatest wild animals – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. I visited the park in 2006 and was blown away by the whole experience. The Kruger’s scenery offers everything from the savannah to the forest, river and mountain and is truly breathtaking.

The seasons in the Kruger Park area are more usefully defined by rainfall and the best time to visit is usually between May and August, although rainfall starts declining in April and is still fairly low in September and October. This is possibly the best time to visit for game-viewing as permanent waterholes attract animals, the vegetation becomes thinned out

and trees don’t have so many leaves to obstruct the view.

What to expect on safari.... 5am – Wakey wakey rise and shine

The best game viewing is to be found first thing in the morning and the anticipation is half the excitement! You could meet a herd of elephants at a drinking hole, observe a herd of shy impala or get up close with a pack of Lion’s… just wait and see!

9.30am: Safari vehicles start returning from the game drives for breakfast.

11.00am: Depending on the season and the rules of the reserve, many lodges offer a Safari Walk with an armed tracker. This gives you a chance to see insects and birds. The tracker

will tell you fascinating stories as well as the traditional cultural and medicinal properties of trees and plants.

After your walk you will have a chance to relax and unwind or enjoy a swim to cool down.

1pm: Lunch then more time for relaxing or take an afternoon nap.

4pm: As the sun starts to set you will join the other guests and rangers for afternoon tea before the evening Game Drive.

4.30pm: Safari Time! You will head out on your second Game Drive for the day with a beautiful sunset as the backdrop. The animals start to become more active again and the nocturnal animals get ready for their hunting. Your ranger will be driving the vehicle and the tracker is up front looking out for tracks and spotting the animals.

6pm: As the sun sets the ranger will pick a good spot for a sun downer

where you will pause to watch the sunset and enjoy some cocktails and refreshments. A real safari tradition! I really enjoyed this!!

6.30pm: As it starts to get dark, the tracker and guide use a powerful spotlight to catch sight of the animals. The animals eyes reflect in the spot light and the ranger and tracker will concentrate on finding the nocturnal animals such as Leopards and Lions.

7.30pm: Back to the safari lodge to freshen up before dinner with a lovely glass of wine or two.

This may sound hectic and a very long day but I can tell you that the buzz and excitement when you actually see the animals makes the early mornings worthwhile; you will be counting down the minutes until you are back on the safari vehicle!

You have a choice of places to stay whilst on safari from tents to luxury lodges; I stayed at a lodge called

“Shumbalala Game Lodge” in the heart of the Thornybush Game Reserve. This is a beautiful lodge and the whole team couldn’t do enough for you, I can’t wait to go back one day. For the more adventurous why not stay in a luxury tent – don’t worry they have everything you need and are very safe (it is not like camping in the UK!), typically the tents are fully air-conditioned with your private ensuite so you can relax in a warm bath after an exciting day’s game viewing.

Children are welcome at the majority of lodges but you would

need to check on an individual basis the minimum age, this tends to be around 8 years old as you will appreciate that you need to be very quiet and sit fairly still on safari, so this may be a little too much to expect from younger children.

i would definitely recommend going on safari and this can be teamed up with a beach option or a city before or after either in south africa or maybe off to the indian Ocean. if this whets your appetite for adventure then please give me call for more information and prices.

Offering a complete design and build service for your new kitchen or bathroom, Home Focus Ltd

provides a ‘one stop’ shop for a multitude of services ranging from general repairs and plumbing, through to a complete kitchen or bathroom installation.

Sole proprieter, Barry Stevens, started Home Focus six years ago as a plumbing business, realising the need in Hertfordshire for a customer focused and reliable plumbing service. Experience and a keenness to offer an all round service, led Barry into expanding the business.

Barry told us, “We offer a complete service and customers will deal with me from start to finish. We offer a design service where we will measure up and then provide a 3D plan for the customer. The work will be done as per the design and we will then look after the electrics, plumbing, plastering right through to decorating. Customer service is really important to me and this is where we strive to provide a much higher level of service than people normally associate with plumbers. We will always turn up on time, provide quotes on time and make sure that we get back to people when we say we will.”

Barry is an associate member of the Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineers and prides himself on a personal service, especially to the elderly and vulnerable, where a trustworthy service is essential. “All our tradesmen are experienced, courteous, and respectful of every customer’s home or business” Barry explained.

“Thank you very much for a job well done. We are thrilled with our new bathroom and look forward to showing it off to all our friends as well as making good use of the facilities.” Mr & Mrs Low (Hitchin)

“Barry did a lot of work on our house, installing and removing radiators, sorting out the central heating, fi xing leaking pipes, and installing an outside tap. His work was of the highest standard, he was always punctual, great at solving problems, always tidy, very reliable and always smiling. We can’t recommend him highly enough.” Clara & Steve Sare (Knebworth)

“Just to say a huge thank you for doing such a great job on our bathroom and downstairs toilet and to say how pleased we are with the result. I really appreciated the time you took to help us choose a suitable suite, including taking me down to your suppliers, that you were reliable and kept me informed of how the work was going and that you fi tted the suite to a very high standard. I also felt you were 100% trustworthy and I could leave you with a key for the times we were not in. We will certainly be using you again!” Sandra Thompson (St Albans)

ZUMBA with Elle

Zumba is an exhilarating, effective, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-

burning dance fitness craze that is sweeping the nation and is now available in the Village Life area thanks to local instructor Ellena Brooks.

Ellena has danced since the age of four winning a raft of medals, awards and competitions. In her teenage years she helped run a dance troupe which performed at the London Palladium and Her Majesty’s Theatre to packed out audiences. In her early 20’s she was introduced to Salsa and was taught by a professional Salsa and Merengue dancer.

Ellena is not your run of the mill Zumba instructor, offering classes which are friendly, energetic, fun and a superb workout. Many customers

are combining her class with a healthy diet and are losing weight week on week. Ellena has even setup a Facebook support group were people can discuss all things Zumba plus losing weight, their goals, the class that night and even the music.

Music is so important to Ellena’s class. Cypriot by birth and because of her dance influences, she loves all types of international music. It’s energising and uplifting and she keeps to the original styles of dance for the music – be it Salsa, Cumbia, Flamenco, Greek or Regaetton.

Ellena told Village Life, “There’s no sign of a pop song or a grapevine move in my class which I am very proud of! We get together for an hour and fill that hour with uplifting music, fun moves and we burn calories with a huge grin, we definitely do not take

ourselves too seriously. I dance like a mad woman, but everyone in the class takes it at their personal pace.”

Ellena has four classes a week - Monday’s and Tuesday’s at 8pm at the Welwyn Civic Centre; Wednesday’s at 7.30pm at Oaklands Primary School, and Thursday’s at 8pm at St John’s CE JMI School in Lemsford. There is no need to book, just turn up 10 minutes before the class time to register. £5 per class and a loyalty card gives you your 11th class free.

Most of us spend more time planning our holidays each year than we ever do planning

our lives. We go through life with dreams and ambitions failing to plan the route we need to take to get there. Then we are

surprised when we find ourselves somewhere completely different – not always where we want to be!

In both work and life if we are to succeed in achieving our dreams we need to set goals. These goals need to be clearly defined and supported by our passion and drive to bring them alive.

Visualise – With eyes closed imagine yourself in the place that you dream of for yourself. Consider who will be around you and what you will be feeling, doing and enjoying. Let those thoughts and feelings flow... and you have your goal!

BelieVe – What you dream of for yourself is achievable. If others enjoy such a lifestyle then you can do the same, provided, of course, you are prepared to put the work in!

Order – Now begin to order the things that you will need to do to achieve your goals. How will you find the time, money, support, skills etc to get you to where you want to be? Write this all down.

set yOur timescale – What is it you need to do next? Write down your plan for the coming weeks and months.

daily checks – Review your planned activities each day – are they taking you towards your goal? Discard those that aren’t. Keep your goal firmly in your mind. Create your own visual interpretation and pin it to your wall.

think POsitiVe – and use positive language. If those gremlins start to creep in, give them short shrift and just remember, you can do whatever you want to do!

Oh, and it’s never too late!

Macmillan was founded in 1911 by Douglas Macmillan whose father died of cancer that same year. Today Macmillan Cancer

Support is an essential source of support for people living with cancer and a major force for improving cancer care.

A small number of local volunteers work together as the Welwyn & Hatfield Fundraising Committee for Macmillan Cancer Support and, thanks to the generous support of the local community, have raised over £85,000 over the last 5 years from events including an annual quiz, fashion shows (with the kind support of SuSu of Welwyn), hosting a professional touring opera company, a Winter Fair, the Macmillan Coffee Morning, Wine Tastings, collections, kind donations, and from an annual Winter Ball hosted by Tewin Bury Farm Hotel. All the funds raised by the committee are used to fund the work of Macmillan in Hertfordshire.

Cancer patients and their families in Hertfordshire receive care and support from over 70 Macmillan-funded nurses, doctors and related healthcare professionals as well as from a recently opened Macmillan information centre at The Lister Hospital supported by the committee’s local fundraising activities.

2011 is a very special year for Macmillan, celebrating its centenary year, and the Winter Ball at Tewin Bury Farm Hotel on Saturday November 12th is being planned as a very special event. There will be a Champagne reception with the opportunity to win a half carat diamond (kindly donated by Jago, St Albans), followed by a fabulous 4-course dinner, the always lively auction, and dancing to live music until 1am and the committee would love to welcome along new supporters as well as their very kind and loyal regular supporters of the event.

Independent Living Supplies provide a range of telecare products, from the latest

technology to the simplest solutions offering independence for the elderly and disabled who wish to remain in their home, along with peace of mind and reassurance for family carers and relatives. Falls, floods, fire, taking medication, inactivity, bogus callers, can all be an issue but the telecare products are a safe and easy way to send alerts for help.

The business was setup by Lisa Cox who spent many years advising the Local Authorities on telecare solutions used within their sheltered housing and care homes. With the increasing growth of the elderly population and cuts in council funding, Lisa realised that there

was a need to provide easy to use technology that reduced the costs for care.

If you have capital of over £23,000 you will be funding care and could be paying as much as £1,400 per week for a waking night Carer. With telecare technology you can reduce care costs by approximately £350 per week by paying for a “sleeping night carer”.

Lisa offers a wide range of products from leading manufacturers including portable alarm pager units, homecare monitoring solutions and medication alerts. One of the most popular products is a watch telephone which is worn on the wrist or as a pendent. It receives incoming calls and is capable of a clear two way conversation through the watch. It is simple to use, pressing the two

buttons makes a call and pressing one button receives a call. In an emergency, the family, carer or an emergency response unit can be alerted.

Lisa’s knowledgeable staff provide advice on the best and most cost effective solutions for people, she has a team of installers who will go round, set up and test the technology ensuring that the family carer or relative and the end users are totally satisfied with the product and how to use it.

Village Life Readers can enjoy 50% off the installation charge by mentioning Village Life when they call. For further information contact Lisa on 01438 821251 or visit www.independentlivingsupplies.co.uk

Canine Behaviour and Training Expert Adem Fehmi runs his own company providing training and support to dog owners and will be giving us some tips on various techniques over the coming months.

This month we look at

TEACHING THE STAY COMMAND

It is important to make sure that the puppy is comfortable with the positions and clearly understands the commands before attempting

stay exercises.1. The puppy should be on your left hand side and get

his attention. Now give the sit command.2. Tell the puppy to “Stay” and show the puppy the

flat palm of your hand, keep good eye contact with your puppy.

3. Now keeping the left leg stationary beside the dog move the right leg one step out towards your right using the command stay and continuing to show your raised palm of your hand.

4. Bring the right leg back in line with the left and reward the dog for not moving.

5. As the dog gets used to the idea of NOT moving, gently start to move the left leg out towards the right leg that has previously moved.

6. Then return the left leg back beside the puppy followed by the right leg and praise the dog for staying.

The aim is to gradually distance yourself from the puppy so that in the end the handler can do a complete circle around the puppy whilst it stays in a steady position.

This exercise must be repeated for the down and the stand positions also. Remember to build on good foundations, don’t move on to a new exercise or stage until the puppy is doing the exercise consistently.

For portraits from single person to group, it is the people that are important and should occupy the majority of the photograph, try to compose the shot

so there is the least amount of dead space as possible. For a single person it is traditional to frame them portrait

fashion, or so the shot is tall. There is nothing wrong with using the wide or landscape format, especially if the subject is facing to the side as you can give them space to look into. For more than one person, stick to the landscape or wide format, but there are no set rules on this, it’s down to what looks right to you.

For a single person portrait the eyes should be positioned two thirds up, granted again there are no set rules on this, but it just looks wrong any other way.

What works well for me is to ask the subject to lean slightly forward, this stretches the jaw line as well as taking any chin issues out of the equation. I always try to look slightly down on the subject as this brings the eyes into play more. Also I like to bring hands into the shot as people look better with a prop and hands can offer that.

My personal favorite portrait setup is using window light as with the example photo. As long as the sun isn’t streaming directly through the window you can take some wonderful photographs. The non-direct light turns the window into a massive lampshade, making the light and shadows soft. This diffuse look will make skin look smoother and eyes more vibrant but be careful to ensure that the eye furthest from the window isn’t covered by the shadow from the nose.
