Mayor’s Message

Nobleford Heritage Day, Aug 8,2015. This annual event is almost here and will again be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. A full day of "FREE". Pancake breakfast, Parade, Bake sale, Sheep shearing demonstration at the Museum, Dog agility/ Equestrian events at the Community Complex. FCSS games, Astro Jump, Horse rides, Concessions, Bungee Rapid Fire, Bumper Balls and a Dinner, also all at the Complex. Have you ever wondered how all this is put together? ...Volunteers! The "FINAL TOUCHES" meeting is Aug 3rd, upstairs at the Complex. If you would like to be involved as a volunteer on Heritage Day, please attend this meeting. Flip/serve pancakes, move barricades, set up tables, etc. Lots of last minute things! Call the Village Office, 403-824-3555 and leave your number if you cannot make the meeting. A recent visitor to our Village commented, "I have never seen a "town as clean and well kept." We have a beautiful Village and everyone should be very proud of how we look. You as homeowners are to be congratulated. Some yards this year are spectacular! New lawns! Water features! Backyard greenhouses! Showcase yards and innovations! A special thank you also goes out to our Public Works staff. The Parks and Walkways are in great shape. Spray Park being well used and looks great! One note of displeasure here...the back alley, the area behind your back fence is your responsibility. Please mow/maintain this area. The long grass/weeds need to be controlled. Be a good neighbour. If you need help in this area call the Village Office. Thanks! Keeping with the good neighbour theme, please don't leave your RV trailers/boats on the street any longer than it takes to load/unload. AND...we have seen some mischief in the public washrooms. Things like this make everyone uncomfortable. If we don't know what to do if we suspect something is wrong, the right thing to do is to call the Village Office. It takes your (taxpayer) money to fix these things. Please be a good neighbour. Back to a happier theme. The Summer Fun program at the Community Complex, run by FCSS, is in full swing and is now FREE. Drop by and say hello! The long awaited building of the roundabout at the intersection of 519 and Hwy 23 is about to start. Completion date is October 2015. Should be interesting! You will have noticed the new signs warning everyone of the intersection. So far, very effective. A big thanks to our CAO, Kirk Hofman and assistant CAO, Karen Feenstra. They were instrumental in convincing the new government to install these signs. The Phase 5 residential subdivision is now ready for building. McNally, Associated Engineering and our CAO & PW staff did great work to make this happen, on time and on budget. Finally some rain! Take some time and enjoy your community. Say hello to your neighbour. Nobleford is a great place to live. Don McDowell

Christian Reformed Church Submitted by Patricia Konynenbelt www.noblefordcrc.com Sunday Services – 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. – Pastor Pete VanderBeek Pre-school and Nursery Sunday School – meet dur ing the a.m. service YPS and Young Adults – Sunday evenings for either Bible Study or Social * Today, July 17th, we were awakened to the sound and sight of the gently falling rain. How welcoming after experiencing the days of

extreme heat earlier in the month. As the month of July draws to a close we give thanks for the memories of family vacations, the visits of

friends and loved ones but also a time to allow us that “break” to enjoy a time of relaxation and quietness at the end of a day. When was the

last time you looked at the night sky and gazed in wonder at the amazing colors of a sunset and/or watched the “twinkling” stars in the night

sky, giving thanks for the beautiful land in which we live. Let us give thanks to God for our families, friends and freedoms. For all that we

have and hold dear we give praise and thanksgiving to God as we step through that August door. * We welcome to our congregation Pastor Bill Vis and his wife, Betty. Pastor Bill will serve our congregation as interim pastor for a few

months. The Vis’ are well acquainted with southern Alberta having served the Granum CRC several years ago. * Grad Sunday was held on June 28th. Congratulations to all those who have completed their studies be that high school, university, college or a school of technology. May you be blessed in the plans you have for the future. * The Annual Church Picnic was another success. Many thanks to all who organized the luncheon and activities for the day. A perfect day

to celebrate and give thanks for the great country of Canada. * We wish to thank the DVBS director, teachers and helpers and the children who attended DVBS. It is our prayer that the children

enjoyed a time of learning the Bible stories and songs. * Congratulations to Brent Venhuis and Jessica Jonker who will exchange marriage vows on Saturday, August 15 th. “ Marriage thrives in

a climate of love, honor, and respect.” * Sincerest condolences are extended to Johanna Konynenbelt and her extended family with the passing of her son Randy. Also, sincerest

sympathies to Ron and Tina Konynenbelt with the loss of Ron’s brother. “God comforts us so that we can comfort others”. * The month of August brings with it a time of preparation for the return of students to the “halls of learning”. For some it might mean

leaving home to obtain a desired course of studies. To all students, teachers, administrators and bus drivers; may you be well prepared for

the first semester of a new school year. We give thanks for the gift of learning that will be beneficial for the future. * We also pray for our farmers as they prepare for harvest 2015. Please keep safety the number one priority as you bring in the harvest. We extend a warm welcome to everyone in the community to join us in worship each Sunday. Shalom!!!

How to keep your house cool, without Air Conditioning.

Buildings are constructed with insulation and vapor barriers in walls and ceilings, windows are double pained with air trapped between them, doors contain insulation and weather stripping. These features create a barrier between inside and outside the building. With diligent management you can keep the heat out and cool inside your home during the day by attempting to seal it up. Here are the basics to manage at typical summer week with 30c degree daytime temperature and 15c degree night time temperature week.

1- Keep out the daytime heating: By 8 am, close ALL windows, doors, blinds, this keeps heat out and cool in. DO NOT open windows to get a breeze as you are just letting the hot air in the house.

2- Welcome the night time cooling: After 8 pm open windows and doors to allow cool air in and hot air out. You may assist the air circulation by turning on your furnace fan that also sucks air in from outside the building. Be sure to close up the house in the morning before the day time heating.

3- You may want to monitor the effectiveness by placing a thermometer outside and one inside and compare them. Most house thermostats have a thermometer on them.

With God’s help a garden can become a place where one

can find peace and contentment. Where one can enjoy

and be lost in the quietness and beauty of the wonders

that surround us. The sound of birds chirping and cooing,

the smell of the air, the warmth of the sun, the coolness of

the breeze, the green of the trees, and the blue of the sky

above, are all put in place by God. It would be wonderful

if all the world could be a place of peacefulness like a

garden, a place where people could live side by side without quarrelling, a place where each would watch over the other. God

calls out to each of us to watch over our brothers and sisters and to seek peace. Sundays 10:00 AM - Worship Service with Pastor Bob Derrick - Sunday School during the Worship Service - Coffee hour following the service Pastor Paul Heidebrecht from the Calgary Community Reformed Church was a guest minister in the Monarch church on Sunday July 19 and Pastor Bob Derrick was in the Calgary church. Senior’s News Submitted by Gisela Wise

Hello Seniors, This is July and after the heatwave we are now having rain and cold temperatures, these changes in the weather can be very trying, especially for us older folks. We recently had our group photo taken, and new and old members flocked to our door to be included. I have seen a small print and it looks very nice, so soon we will have the full size version for all to see. As this is Summer we are as usual stopping Pancake Breakfast for July and August, and resume again in September. We are now getting ready for Heritage Day, and I can report that the Senior Centre will be open for refreshments as in previous years. The Seniors have also decided to donate their Van to some other Charitable Organization as it was not being used to it’s full potential by us. We can now report that the Van is being donated to Streets Alive, they were delighted to accept our donation as their own transport was in dire need for replacement. The proceeds from our refreshment sale on Heritage Day will also be donated to a Charitable Organization. Normal Meetings are still as follows, Tuesday 1-3 pm Crafting. Wednesday is Coffee Morning, and Friday from 1-3 pm Pool for men.

WATER. Nobleford is fortunate to have an abundance of quality water. Nobleford and Lethbridge are the two major water providers in our Area. Nobleford conveys water to pipelines running North and South. Nobleford user fees and utility rates are some of the lowest in Alberta. All the water in Nobleford is metered and you pay for what you use. For the first 100 cubic meters used bi monthly, residential home owners pay 60 cents per cubic meter ( $.0027 per gallon, ¼ cent). Any water over 100 meters ( 22,000 gallons) you pay double the rate. It makes “cents” for you to avoid wasting water. Please be responsible in using water, do not let it run down the street gutter. WATER is a valuable resource. You own the water meter and it is up to you to keep it operating properly. You should monitor your meter as it will indicate water usage and help identify efficiencies or water leaks that are very costly to you. If you suspect a faulty meter or an error in your utility bill, please contact the Village office.

If you notice that a street light is out, you do not need to call the Village Office. Please Call Fortis Alberta direct at 310-WIRE (310-9473) or go to their web page at www.fortisalberta.com to report street

lights outage. You will need to give the exact address that the street light is on. The general waiting period after a report is made is 10 days.

Have a great summer!!!!

You are Illegally Parked.

The reason there are laws is to help ensure a quality of lifestyle that benefits all people.

Please have consideration for the laws that are in Nobleford.

Nobleford Council is concerned with parking issues in Nobleford and provides the following information.

-The provincial laws do allow for trailer parking on streets providing the trailer is hitched to the vehicle at all times, BUT -the Village law prohibits trailer parking on residential streets. DO not park any trailer that includes RV trailers and Boat trailers on any residential street for more than short periods of time for loading or unloading unless you have permission from the Village. 403 824-3555 DO NOT extend the trailer pull outs while parked on street for loading or unloading. -NO PARKING on HIGHWAY AVENUE at any time. -NO semi parking in North Nobleford east of Highway Av. Please park on West Railway Avenue. - You may park a semi tractor or bus or RV on your private property. Do not assume that the property line is the sidewalk. Most homes are set back 25 ft from the property line, this means if your trailer is on your driveway and longer than 25 ft it is probably illegally parked! If you need a place to park your trailer, consider the new secured RV STORAGE LOT in North Nobleford. You shall be responsible for costs to repair any damage that your large vehicle causes, including concrete sidewalks. -You or visitors may park their RV on the east side of the community complex for up to 72 hours. Light duty15 amp electrical service is available if needed ( not AC capable) Donations are accepted at the Village office. Place $ in after hours drop box at Village Office. - NO PARKING in alleys or lanes, you may be fined and towed without notice. -The Village land use bylaw requires all properties to have sufficient off street parking on their property. That means if you have 2 cars, you need to have 2 parking spot for them off the street. -Tickets will be issued by RCMP or Village for violations, vehicles will be towed without notice. PARKING, please be considerate of your neighbors and community.

Check us out on FACEBOOK – “Nobleford Area Museum Society” With the recent heat-wave it would seem the “dog-days” of summer

are upon us already in June/July! Thankfully the last few showers

have been able to lower the temperatures a bit. On behalf of the Museum membership, I’d like to welcome this year’s summer student,

Pam Harbers. Just a reminder, we are now open during the week for

the summer months, so come on out and learn about your local history. Our FATHER’S DAY BREAKFAST and SCABBY BUTTE TOUR

was held June 20, 2015. The weather was perfect and we had a great

turnout for both the breakfast and the tour at Scabby Butte afterward.

A couple of us were fortunate enough to find some Myledaphus bipartitus teeth! This creature was a freshwater “guitarfish” , in the

same family as sting-rays and manta-rays. The exposed Pachyrhinosaurus skeleton as always was a hit! Special thanks to

Gary and Lee for cooking the eggs and pancakes, all the ladies for

keeping the visitors fed and looked after, Don Zech and Roy Sherman

for access to their properties, and to Don and Lee for leading the tour.

On HERITAGE DAY (August 8th), the Museum will be featuring a special sheep-shearing and knitting demonstration with Dave and Connie Carlson with some

of the Museum’s very own spinners/knitters. See you all

on Heritage Day! As the Museum correspondent for the village newsletter,

I’d like to encourage you all to send me suggestions for

short articles pertaining to the history of Nobleford and

the surrounding area. What about the history of Nobleford

has intrigued you and you would like to know more? I can

be reached at: [email protected] or 403-892-4929.

Thank you to Barb Hofman for “street names” suggestion. Regular meetings are held the first Monday of each month

at 7:30 pm at the Museum (225 Milnes St.). Our next

meeting will be August 10th at 7:30 pm at the Museum. Till next time!

What is the Origin of my Street’s Name?? KENEX (Kenex Drive/Kenex Place): The Kenex district was located northwest of Nobleford was named by combining

the names “Kent” and “Essex”; the Ontario counties from which many of

the area’s early settlers came. KEOUGH (Keough Crescent): In the 1870s, a man by the name of Dan Keough, slipped over the border into

Canada in pursuit of hides (fur trade). He was one of those persons called

“wolfers,” because of their unorthodox hunting methods. After killing a

bison, the hide was poisoned with strychnine and left as bait. It was a cruel

death for the wolves (yes, we had wolves in this area long ago), as well as

the Indian’s dogs. Understandably, wolfers were not a popular group. It is

also known that Dan Keough mined coal at Scabby Butte in the 1870s, haul-

ing it to Fort Macleod, possibly to improve his relations with the Mounties.

While not much is known about this mysterious man, he left his mark on

this area; Keho Lake, and Keho School District also bear his name, although

somewhat simplified in these instances.

Is the property adjacent to you neat and tidy? Did you know it is your responsibility to care for the boulevard, lane, alley or ditch adjacent to your property in Nobleford ? It is important that you identify where your property line is and make sure that there are no overgrown trees, bushes, fences or similar outside that property line. The Village offers you complimentary use of the dump truck for maintenance of these areas. If you do not maintain these areas the Village may maintain them and bill you for the costs incurred.
