What is being done

• More than 80% Indian farmers have <2 hectares

• 50% have minimal access to Knowledge, Inputs & Technologies (KITs)

• In 2012 Project Nirmiti was conceived

- Project started in most backward districts of Orissa, Assam and

Jharkhand

- People with good agronomy knowledge, expertise about local

conditions and passion to work with rural communities were

appointed as agri-entrepreneurs

- KITs were provided to small farmers in remote areas thru Agri

entrepreneurs

Project Nirmiti- our ambition

The project has been scaled-up to

• 3 states in 23 districts, 1,725 villages with an outreach of >64,000 smallholders through a network of 450 well trained and equipped Agri entrepreneurs

• Collaboration of Syngenta, Agri entrepreneurs and smallholders • Productivity of rice farmers increased by 57% and profitability by 40%

The story of a typical Nirmiti smallholder farmer

Name - Chakradhar GiriCrop - Rice, farm size - 1.5 ha

Location - Jamunaposi, a hilly region of Odisha, IND

Before Nirmiti• Access to inputs - 164 km (6 hrs)• Farming practice - local rice variety and

with limited use of chemistry (generic), no access to know-how & technology

• Yield - 1,400 kg/acre

After Nirmiti (2013 onwards) • Access to inputs - at his doorstep• Farming practice - Syngenta hybrid

with total solution, knowhow and technologies

• Yield - 3,500 kg/acre

Nirmati project model is now being

replicated

Syngenta Foundation where it will be scaled up in next 5 years.

Plan is to develop ~100,000 agri-entrepreneurship with input access technology & information and output linkages to lift small and marginal farmers and double their income.

Agriculture and respective State Govts.) in PPP Mode

• Top Ten companies adopt 1 district each for overall

agriculture development as per key indicators.

• Select cluster of villages in the district for effective

implementation

• Establish forward and backward linkages through

eNAM

• Local KVK,s and University to be roped in.

What is way forward for Government and Crop Protection Industry… just few ideas

• Baseline studies by independent agency in 2019 and then

work to make it model districts within span of 5 years.

• Local MP/MLA funds also to be used?

• Funds spend/dedicated for these activities to be covered under

CSR?

• All activities should be coordinated/monitored through district

collectors/commissioner

• Connection with Niti aayog?

• Time lines to be decided
