    WHY ARE WE TO SERVE?

The purpose of serving in the church is:to glorify God and edify others .

    Exodus 20:1-17Matthew 22:37-40I Peter 4:11Ephesians 4:11,12

    HOW ARE WE TO SERVE?

    1. Passion is the God-given desire that compels us to make adifference in a particular ministry. It indicates where you are bestsuited to serve (increases motivation).

    2. Spiritual gifts - God gives them to every believer. They indicate what you will do when you serve (serve more completely).

    3.

Personal style reflects how you prefer to relate to others and theworld. It indicates how you will serve. (When you serve in a waythat is consistent with your God-given style, you will feel moreconfident and fulfilled).

For most of us, seeing as God sees requires a new way of thinking . Someof the ideas that we have of God, the church and ourselves will keep usfrom finding our unique ministry contribution.

A different perspective can entirely change what we see.

We need to move away from traditional models of ‘the minister’ and stepoutside the li mitations of the ‘ministry box’.

    WHERE SHOULD I SERVE?PASSION

The fact is that I can’t care about everything equally. There are some thingsthat I care about more than others.

    Passion is God-given.

Passion answers the question ‘ WHERE do I serve?’

Bruce Bugbee writes:“Sometimes we think of our passion in terms of a burden we carry,a call we’ve received, a dream we have, or a vision we’veglimpsed . Whatever you call it, passion is the God-given desireof the heart to make a difference.”

The fact that each of us cares more deeply about some things than othersdo, is by design.

When you are excited or impassioned about where you are serving, thenyou will have the motivation and a sense of fulfilment that you aremaking a difference for the kingdom.

Although there may be some overlap, most people’s passion falls into one of3 general categories:

Passion about people Passion about functions Passion about causes

Your passion will energize you. It will make you come alive emotionally, andactivity or thoughts related to your passion will give you energy.

“This is God’s way of moving you toward those people, roles or causes thatare His created agenda for your life. His will for you is partly revealed in

your God- given passion. What energizes you?”

    PASSION ASSESSMENT:WHERE SHOULD I SERVE?

    DIRECTIONS

Prayerfully consider your answers to the questions. Complete the assessment on your own. There are no right or wrong responses. Don’t be concerned about ‘whether’ you can do it or ‘how it can be

done ’. Complete the assessment as if you have no obstacles to fulfilling your

    heart’s desire.

    SUMMARY

    9. I think the area where I could make the most significant contribution is:

If you need more help in identifying your Passion, look for patterns in youranswers. For example, can you see any themes? Does a particular age groupkeep coming up? Is there a need that keeps surfacing? Are you serving in asimilar role in different areas? Can you prioritize your concerns?

    CONCLUSION

    10. Based on my answers to the above questions, I sense …

    I have a Passion for:

Making a statement of Passion is not easy for everyone. Remember that thisis just the beginning of a process of identifying and clarifying your Passion. Asyou think, pray and gain more ministry experience, your Passion will

    become clearer over time.

The two-fold test for our passion

Does it glorify God? Does it edify others?

(You may have a desire in your heart which is not from God).

HOW CAN I DO IT WITH STYLE?PERSONAL STYLE

Personal style is God-given .There is no right or wrong personal style.Personal style answers the question “HOW do I serve?”

Psalm 139:13-16(eg. which hand you write with)

Your God-given style is the way you prefer to relate to the worldaround you.

You have been created with certain preferences. You find yourself morecomfortable relating in some ways than others and certain responses comemore naturally to you. In certain situations you may not feel free to expressyourself naturally.

You can relate in ways other than your preferred style, but it isn’t ascomfortable. When relationships don’t permit your preferred style, theyrequire additional time, energy and sensitivity.

However, if you can find ministry opportunities that require somebody withyour style - you will experience far more energy for ministry. Yourpersonal style is unique to you and energises you.

  • 8/16/2019 Vineyard Church Spiritual Gifts Questionnaire - Sept 2010

    26/40

    Two key elements of style

    1. How are you energised?

Task orientated People-orientatedDo you find interactions with people to be energy-producing?

ORDo you get energy from the completion of a task?

Both value developing relationships and meeting goals, but each has aprimary and secondary means of achieving a plan.

If you are task-orientated, the primary content of your ministry should beaccomplishing tasks that serve people: your primary focus should be ontask accomplishment.

If you are people-orientated, the primary content of your ministry shouldbe more involved with direct people interaction. Your primary focusshould be on relational issues.

    2. How are you organised?

    Unstructured Structured

At the unstructured end of the scale are people who prefer to have lots ofoptions and flexibility. They tend to enjoy moving between a variety ofactivities. At the structured end are people who prefer to plan and bring

order to their lives. They tend to seek decisions and closure. Both structured and unstructured value being organised, but each has adifferent approach to being organised.

    The Four Personal Style Quadrants

    1) Task/unstructured

If you tend to be task/unstructured, you like general guidelines, versatility, helping wherever needed and tangible results.

If this is your personal style: Consider the kind of ministry position thatneeds you to fulfil a wide variety of responsibilities

    For example:

    2) Task/structured

If you tend to be task/structured, you like getting the job done, focusing onresults, following an agenda and appreciating clear direction.

If this is your personal style: Consider the kind of ministry position thatallows you to know clearly what the goals are and how the task is to beaccomplished.

    For example:

    3) People/unstructured

If you are people/unstructured, you like spontaneous situations, are veryconversational, you relate well to others, and tend to be flexible.

If you are people/structured, you like defined relationships, feeling secure infamiliar surroundings, project warmth and enjoy familiar relationships.

If you are this personal style: Consider the kind of ministry position thatwill enable you to interact with people in more stable or defined settings.

    For example:

Personal style does explain our behaviour, but it doesn’t excuse it (e.g. just because you are unstructured, it does not mean that you can fail tomeet deadlines).

As part of your servant profile, your style complements your passion and indicates the unique way your gift will be expressed.

Relationship of Spiritual Gifts to Personal Style

We tend to equate some spiritual gifts with certain personality traits. Forexample, we can confuse the gift of evangelism with an outgoing and

somewhat aggressive style. This stereotype has kept many gifted evangelistsfrom using their God-given abilities, especially if their style is more relationaland intimate.

Some fail to fulfil their calling as leaders because they do not see themselvesacting like other leaders who have a different style.

    Possibilities for your Personal Ministry

A man named Warren has a servant profile that looks like this:

Warren thought of the following possible ministry positions: Seminar instructor Budget counsellor Writer of a training process for creating a family budget Deacon serving on the budget committee Benevolence board member Fund-raiser

Three spheres of service in which your ministry may be found

    1. Organisational (structured/on-going)

Those ministries that meet regularly (weekly/monthly) and have to beorganised to meet the on-going needs within a small group, ministry team orlarger church body. This leads to meaningful relationships andaccountability. Some organisational settings where you could use yourpassion, gifts and style:

How effective are you where you are serving?

    2. Projects (Periodic/short-term)These ministry opportunities should meet special needs that arise from timeto time. Service is rendered until the task is completed.

Can you think of some projects where you could use your passion, gifts andstyle?

These are ministry opportunities made available to each of us by the HolySpirit. The Lord provides ways for us to serve in personal and spontaneousexpression of grace. Can you think of promptings you’ve had where youcould use your passion, gifts and style?

NOTE – Refer to the hand-out “What am I supposed to do?”

Course Highlights:o There are no elite or inferior gifts, styles, or passionso The aim is to glorify God and to edify otherso Service is forever, but tasks/roles may change

In some places around the world, the average volunteer (church andsecular) serves about 4-5 hours a week.

We must be careful not to be simply average.

2 Corinthians 10:12The real question is: How many hours are you committing to your servantprofile? Would God be calling you to increase or decrease them? Doing

more or less than someone else doesn’t matter. Obeying God’s voice doesmatter.

your spiritual gifts. If your role consistently drains you because of the position in which

you serve, examine your personal style.

    Consider the following interpretation:

45-50 You are serving properly38-44 You are probably in the right ministry (but need more

serving experience)30-37 Some ministry changes are necessary30 or less Seek counsel regarding ministry that would be more in line

with who God made you to be. Discuss this with yourministry leader(s).

Whenever you are evaluating your ministry effectiveness, remember: youare not the wrong person . You are the right person, but may be in the

    wrong position.

    A Key Question

“ Why are you doing what others can do, when you are leavingundone what only you can do?”

How do you relate your situation to that question ?

If we need to make any changes in our lives or ministry situations, do notavoid the issue of fear of hurting people. If you or somebody else is in thewrong place in the body - then the body is hurting already and so are you!

    Apply Matthew 18:15-17.

However, we need to make necessary changes humbly, wisely and alwaysendeavouring to speak the truth in love.
