Vintage upright pianos or sometimes called as Vintage upright pianos or sometimes called as vertical pianos feature strings that are arranged vertically, in contrast to grand pianos that have strings in a horizontal position. Upright pianos are usually compared to grand pianos. Aside from the position of strings, the main difference of upright from grand pianos is usage. The History of Vintage Upright Pianos

Vintage upright pianos have reached their popularity even if they are just more suited for living spaces as compared to grand pianos. Let us trace back how upright pianos started by finding out its history.It was Johann Schmidt from Austria who created the very first upright piano at around 1780. After 20 years, John Isaac Hawkins from Philadelphia was able to patent an upright piano with a frame made out of iron and strings arranged vertically. Then, the development of upright pianos increased in the middle of 1800s.increased in the middle of 1800s.

The two popular upright piano makers were Steingraeber and Sohne. In the year 1853, Steinway & Sons was also able to establish a name in the piano industry and continues in making quality pianos today. The name Cunningham also became popular in 1981 and eventually became one of the most reputable piano manufacturers in Philadelphia. An Australian company named Wertheim was able to sell a great number of pianos in the year 1900s and most them were upright pianos.
