Everyone knows that the country music genre is filled with down-home southern folks that sing about love and drinking beer. For the most part, people who like to live the so-called “hick” lifestyle have en-joyed country music. It seems that this was the case for many years but country music has seen a shift in the fan base. Why is this happening? Is it because people all over the country are adopting this lifestyle? Country music is climbing its way to the top of every music chart and it is not because of the hot-male singers who wear tight pants. Well it might be for some people but, country music is changing and more people are listening than ever before. In the 90’s, country music was filled with banjos and long violin solos. The music was great for country line dancing and county fairs. The music in the 90’s was influenced by the wild, wild west. The lifestyle that many artists wrote about was what people in the western states were living. Living on the ranch and herding cattle was the dream of the young people of America. Many of the songs had western tones and lyrics. Country artists dressed as cowboys would: big hats, long tassels and silver buckles. Some of the most popular artists of the 90’s are George Strait, Martina McBride, and Shania Twain. After the 90’s, country music gladly welcomed a new set of stars that changed country music for good. Artists like Rascal Flatts, Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban all saw country music in a different way. It was no longer country line dancing and county fairs for these artists. Carrie Underwood brought a soulful and beautiful voice to the industry and was able to speak to many young girls through her music. Her appearance on American Idol at such a young age also helped to change the world of country music. Rascal Flatts was one of the only boy bands in country music in the early 2000’s. They wrote songs that were upbeat as well as songs that were slower. They gave variety to country music. Even though country music had a surge in the early 2000’s, the amount of people who listen to country music now in 2014 is even larger. Artists like Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean are constantly writ-ing and producing new songs. Other artists such as Tim McGraw and Miranda Lambert are continuing to

make music and writing songs that become all time hits in a matter of weeks. Country music, unlike other genres, has so many popular artists that are extremely talented. New music is played on the radio almost every other week, which keeps fans com-ing back for more. Country music is truly bursting at the seams and keeps pushing the limits all the time. Not only has country music built up its fan base, it has changed the genre all together. Country music now incorporates different styles of music such as hip-hop and rock into the songs. Florida Georgia Line does very well with this. They have been able to make their music appeal to all kinds of people. Country music is no longer sitting in the back of the bus. Watch out all you other genres, country music is coming for you.

The Power of Live MusicMusic is part of our lives whether we realize it our not, whether we actively participate in it or not, whether we ap-preciate its power or not. What is the real power of music? Is it how it affects us? Or, is it that music tells a story in a way we never thought it could? Mark Hoppus of Blink 182 put what we could not into words when he tweet-ed, “The fact that music can induce goose bumps, draw a tear, inspire and connect is one of my favorite parts of being a human.”

Consider the music heard on the soundtrack to your favorite movies. As a viewer, you see the actions, the scenery, the costumes, the special effects and hear the dialogue, but the music is what ties the scene together. It supports it and acts as the guiding emotion. In the best films, music is the co-star. And in films that are so bad you can’t help but cringe, music is the thread that holds the story togeth-er.

Film is just one example of the impor-tance of music. Television programs have musical underscores. Commer-cials have jingles to help sell their products. We often cannot get these jingles out of heads and therefore, we remember the products. Thanks to radio stations that are available tra-ditionally and online, we have access to music 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. We buy our favorite music online. And of course, there is live music. Whether it’s friends

playing the guitar by a campfire, a nightclub with an open mic, a church choir, or a concert in a sold-out arena, people love to gather to share in the experience of live music. Jean Marti-nez, an aspiring musician, discussed his passion for music and live con-certs. Martinez said that while he loves performing, he also enjoys being in the audience. “There is nothing like attending a live concert. Performing or being an attendee. The feeling that everyone is there for the same reason. There is no place I would rather be in the world than when the lights drop and everyone knows the performer is coming on stage. The adrenaline is pumping. The excitement is palpable. Aside from being on stage, that is my favorite place in the world.”

So, why should music play such an important role in our lives? As it turns out, researches at the University of Frankfurt in Germany have discov-ered over the last few decades that music, and more specifically singing and playing, helps the brain develop more fully. Music makes us brighter and happier. It makes us more intelli-gent, more logical, rational and more capable. The same study says that mu-sic even improves the immune system.

Marlene Meier, another aspiring singer from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, discussed with us her journey through the music industry. While she got her start in musical theatre, she has since moved on to bigger ventures. For the

past year, she has been performing in a band called Jaded Views and more recently she was selected as a perform-er on a Disney cruise line. Marlene said that, “While my heart will always be in musical theatre, you are con-stantly pretending to be someone else. With my band, and while I’m pursu-ing a solo music career, it’s just me. If the audience is cheering, its because they enjoy me and are connecting with me as an individual, and not the character I’m pretending to be.”

Quite possibly the most important part of music is the way it brings peo-ple together. No matter what part of the world you are from, music is truly a universal language. There’s a genre for everyone: alternative rock, rap, indie, pop, blues, reggae, classical and many more.

Music affects our brain waves, emo-tions, heart rates and breathing rates. IT can excite us to a state of joy or move us to tears. Meier said while she is on stage, she feels the audience’s emotion. “Not only when I perform do I think the audience gets to see me and how I connect and interpret a song, but I am able to read them and see how they are feeling. It makes a performance. A good audience lets you read their face. You can tell if they’re enjoying it, if you’ve hit them at a sentimental point or if they don’t really connect with a song.
