Business Continuity with Violin’s 7700 Flash Storage Platform Layers of protection for Here, Near and Anywhere Data Availability
Violin’s 7700 Flash Storage Platform Continuous Data Protection (CDP) feature set provides data protection functions against problems in the rack, the data center, in a metro environment, or anywhere based on the application needs for primary storage data protection.
The Challenge Data protection for a business’ primary storage used to be complex, and there is a lot at stake… Big Data… Clouds… Virtualization… Application performance… upgrades… patches… migrations…. End user SLA’s… A lot to juggle and in many cases the company’s ability to do business rests on fast continuous access to vital data. Lose access to data, lose revenue. Lose revenue, lose job. All Bad.
The Solution The 7700 Flash Storage Platform eliminates issues of complexity and reliability for business continuity by providing robust mirroring and replication options for the enterprise’s entire primary (i.e. active) data storage needs, all easily managed at a granular, group or global level, on a single platform running a single code base.
The CDP features on Violin’s 7700 Flash Storage Platform deliver the performance expected from an all flash platform and data protection resulting in comprehensive and automated recovery for all critical applications, business data, and services. Violin’s 7700 Flash Storage Platform enables organizations to define, meet, and even exceed Line-‐of-‐Business SLAs, while protecting data in a way that supports application and organizational goals.
The 7700 Flash Storage Platform provides application-‐specific data protection for all critical primary storage applications, along with near-‐instant recovery, remote replication, and disaster recovery automation.
Protection for Here
• Synchronous mirroring for local protection
Protection for Near • Stretch clusters for regional protection
Protection for Anywhere • Asynchronous replication to remote disaster recovery locations with automatic fail-‐over

Protection for Here 7700 synchronous mirroring provides block-‐level data mirroring across 7700s. Data synchronizes to a second storage device independent of the servers involved with just a few mouse clicks. There is no need for system-‐specific host-‐based tools.
Once the mirror is online, all future data is written simultaneously to both the primary volume and the mirror. Built-‐in, tunable mirror monitoring algorithms continually check for lag time in the write speed between each side of the mirror, which would reside on two separate devices. If lag times are too large, the mirroring process will automatically suspend to minimize the impact to the production server. The mirror will then re-‐synch as soon as possible without impacting server performance.
Protection for Near Primary storage cannot fail: High Availability is a firm requirement. The 7700 Flash Storage Platform can be configured into a scale up stretch metro cluster. A special communication link between 7700 nodes continuously synchronizes I/O and metadata between the pair of 7700s. The HA pair tolerates node failures or temporary upgrades with minimal, if any, disruption to primary storage volumes. Combining the benefit of HA and site disaster recovery, the stretch cluster functionality allows you to deploy an HA solution between two geographically separated sites. In case of failure on one site, data is immediately available at the other, as the data sets are constantly synchronized.
Protection for Anywhere As organizations grow, they often accumulate disparate hardware and networking resources. In addition, monthly bandwidth costs increase significantly with each higher telecommunication link (T1, T3, OC3, OC12, and others). Violin’s 7700 Flash Storage Platform delivers efficient and robust replication between data centers, leveraging storage from any vendor at any office location. To minimize bandwidth requirements, the 7700 provides WAN-‐optimized replication with compression for improved bandwidth efficiency and data encryption (in-‐flight) to guard against unauthorized disclosure.
Violin’s 7700 Flash Storage Platform technology minimizes the amount of data transmitted with user-‐selectable, block level inline deduplication and compression and by eliminating redundancy at the application and file system layers. Rather than arbitrarily transmitting entire blocks or pages (as is typical of other replication solutions), the 7700 technology maps, identifies, and transmits only unique blocks, reducing network traffic and bandwidth requirements by as much as 95%. Meanwhile, adaptive replication automatically switches between continuous and periodic data transmission in the event of temporary bandwidth link outage or throughput degradation. Periodic replication queues data for subsequent transmission, while preserving write-‐order fidelity.
The Result Violin’s 7700 Flash Storage Platform delivers optimized performance based on consistent sub-‐millisecond latencies: The Flash Storage Platform also brings mirroring, metro clustering and asynchronous wide area replication recovery and backup to enterprise –wide primary storage with sophistication and performance that enables enterprises to employ a single solution for all their active data storage needs. The ability to replicate and backup data from a high performance all-‐flash array, such as the 7700, means that the overall speed and efficiency of your cloud or data center are preserved.
Violin’s 7700 Flash Storage Platform capabilities are easily configured, monitored and tuned via Symphony, a single pane browser-‐based interface capable of controlling petabytes of flash storage across hundreds of Violin Memory Flash Storage Platforms at a granular level. Symphony revolutionizes the storage management experience with granular, real-‐time, SLA-‐based data protection management, data efficiency reporting, health monitoring, and customizable dashboards, all under centralized management and administration.
Symphony enables one click monitoring and management of Violin Memory Flash Storage Platforms, even if they are geographically distributed across the data center, across town or across an ocean through a unified web-‐based user interface.
With Violin’s 7700 you get protection for Here, Near and Anywhere to keep your data safe. For more information go to www.violin-‐memory.com.
