The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award is the only league award that recognizes a player’s off-the-field community service as well as his playing excellence. The award is named for 1977 recipient, Walter Payton, to honor his legacy as a humanitarian. Each year, a winner is selected from 32 nominees from the 32 different teams.

A panel of judges, which includes the Commissioner of the NFL, Connie Payton (widow of Walter Payton), the previous year’s winner, and a number of former players, selects the winner of the award. Each of the 32 team nominees receive a $1,000 donation from the NFL Foundation to the charity of their choice. All in all, Nationwide and the NFL donate donate $300,000 annually to Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award nominees.

Last year’s winner was Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis, a

formidable linebacker whose work off the field is just as impressive. He and his wife Kelly founded the Thomas Davis Defending Dreams Foundation (TDDDF), a non-profit dedicataed to providing and promoting free programs that enhance the quality of life for more than 2,000 underprivileged children and their families.

The 2015 winner will be announced during NFL Honors Saturday night — and you will be there to witness it all!
