The Veterans Project

From the Chief Executive Officer

s this issue goes to press, I’ve just completed a HearSay conversation with Marsha Bemko, the executive

producer of ANTIQUES ROADSHOW (AR). We’ve been working closely with Marsha and her team at WGBH for several years to bring AR to our region, and I’m sure you’ve heard that filming for the 2017 season happens on June 25 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center! The response to AR has been extraordinary. Nearly 20,000 people applied for the lottery to receive tickets and bring two items for appraisal. Our phone lines are burning up and social media posts about AR are generating some of the highest engagement we’ve ever had, so this issue of Dimensions includes additional AR content such as behind-the-scenes stories of extraordinary finds and an assortment of fun facts.

If you didn’t get tickets through the lottery, there are still ways to join the fun:

• With a $500 donation to WHRO, you can receive a pair of tickets that allows you to bring two items per person to be appraised.

• Attend the Meet the Appraisers Reception on Friday, June 24, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at MOCA where you can meet Marsha Bemko and other members of the AR team.

• Sign up to be a volunteer!

If you want to hear my conversation with Marsha in its entirety, go to the WHRO Media app and download the HearSay podcast from May 4. The new WHRO media app is available on iPhone, Android and Kindle. Just a reminder that our new app is your source for all PBS, NPR,WHRO locally produced content and anchored live broadcasts. You can set reminders for your favorite programs, bookmark a program for later, or even wake up to the voice of Dwight Davis or Sondra Woodward as your alarm clock.

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW is just the beginning of summer fun. We’ll premiere new Sunday dramas including episodes of Masterpiece favorites Endeavour, Season Three on June 19 and Oxford drama Inspector Lewis, the Final Season on August 7. In addition, two dramas are also coming to public television this summer: The Tunnel, a modern crime thriller, which airs June 19–August 21 at 10:30 p.m., and Dancing on the Edge, a 1930s period drama airing June 26-August 14 at 8:00 p.m.

With the November election approaching, we’ll continue to bring you comprehensive election coverage including anchored live broadcasts of the Republican (July 18–21) and Democratic (July 25–28) conventions as well as encore presentations of six films from American Experience.

Finally, as I do in every issue, I want to thank or congratulate someone. This time, congratulations are in order for the winners of the 2016 WHRO Young Storytellers Awards. WHRO received entries from 400 students in grades kindergarten through 5, and as difficult as it was, we honored twelve students whose storytelling and creativity were judged to be exceptionally original. Who knows, one of these Hampton Roads students may grow up to be the next Garrison Keillor or Ira Glass!

Enjoy the summer!

Bert Schmidt

On Story

A couple of years ago, Car Talk went into “best-of” mode, after the Magliozzi brothers decided to retire. With the death of Tom Magliozzi in November 2014, our thoughts began to turn to the eventual replacement of this NPR legacy program. We have been carrying the show for many years, and have continued to do so since the death of half of the show’s talent. However, the time has come to replace the program.

This decision has not been an easy one, nor has it been something taken lightly. That said, when a program goes into reruns, its time has come. We’ve been hearing from quite a few of you that it’s time for something new. I for one will be sad to see it go. It was the first program that I listened to on public radio. So, with fond memories, and the knowledge that the show will live on via online listening, we bid Car Talk a fond farewell. Our last broadcast of the show will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 25.

After spending countless hours listening to alternative programming, I hit upon something really wonderful! I’m happy to announce that we begin carriage of a new program, On Story, beginning Saturday, July 2 at 10:00 a.m.

On Story deals with the art of filmmaking. It began as a public television program, produced by KLRU – Austin’s PBS outlet – in partnership with the Austin Film Festival. The show is hosted by Jeff Ramos, and features directors, screenwriters, producers, and others who make films, and delves into their creative process in a thought-provoking and entertaining way. Presented through captivating exchanges, anecdotes, and conversation, On Story invites listeners into writers’ rooms, film sets, and the creative minds of some of the most prolific voices in film and television. The show will have broad appeal, and I believe we will grow an audience around it leading up to Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me, This American Life, and Out of the Box. Film is like food; everyone likes it, and our curious audience loves behind-the-scenes angles. I know you’ll enjoy it.

Farewell AnthonyWayla Chambo to host Afternoon Delights

In addition to its magical exercise of routinely bringing music into one’s home or automobile, radio also serves as a convenor of friends, those who share similar tastes around the programming. Included in that circle of companions is the announcer, the curator of the music, whom most listeners have never met and yet, in a curious way, is considered a faithful friend. As one listener expressed it, “… it’s not that you like the announcer, but you feel that he likes you.” So it is with our announcers, friendly folks all.

None of us likes to lose a friend, but things change. People move on. Such is the case with Anthony McSpadden, the host of Afternoon Delights on WHRO-FM. After years of sharing music with the listening audience in Hampton Roads, Anthony will be taking a radio position in Texas, bringing his love of and expertise in classical music to listeners in the Lone Star State, and allowing him to be closer to family. Anthony is one of the best in the business, and he will be missed by the listeners to our stations. We wish our friend all the best.

Moving into Anthony’s position in the afternoon will be Wayla Chambo, our newest announcer, who has become an important part of the radio family in the time she has been with us, ably hosting our Saturday and Sunday morning programs. Her love and understanding of the music becomes obvious when one speaks with her or listens to her on the air. Further evidence of her qualifications is the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Flute Performance she received from the University of North Texas just over a year ago. Wayla and her composer friends will continue the tradition of making your radio afternoon delightful.

New Shows

Tune in Saturdays for more British comedyLead Balloon – Meet Rick Spleen – disillusioned comedian and writer. Rick’s career has not gone the way he had planned; hosting corporate events and appearing on second-rate daytime chat shows was not meant to be part of the plan. Worse still, he’s stuck with a lousy stage name that he chose twenty years ago. Whether he is being accused of putting on weight or accidentally poisoning another performer, Rick combines a mass of neuroses and petty grievances with a terrible propensity for lying. Along for the ride is his quick-talking American co-writer Marty, his unflappable partner Mel, feckless daughter Sam, and Magda, an unenthusiastic Eastern European home help. Saturdays at 9:00 p.m., starting June 18.

Keeping Up Appearances – Our old friend returns! Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced Bouquet, if you please) lives to impress. And she has no patience for people who pretend to be superior–because that makes it “so much harder for those of us who really are.” Assured of her own eminence, she spends her days trying to make sure everyone else is too. Her down-market sisters, Rose and

Daisy, are a challenge, but she’s always willing to talk about her rich sister Violet. Violet’s eccentric, cross-dressing husband, not so much. Saturdays, starting June 18 at 9:30 p.m.

The Doctor Blake Mysteries will continue to air Saturday evenings at 10:00 p.m.

So, dust off the good china, preferably the Royal Doulton with the hand-painted periwinkles, pour a delicious cup of tea, tune your telly to WHRO, and settle in for an evening of laughter.

f you’re a fan of public television you know that British comedies have been our crown jewel for many years. Classics such as Are You

Being Served?, Doc Martin, and As Time Goes By are just examples of the many favorites that have, at one time or another, found a home on WHRO TV15. I, personally, have always been a fan of Saturday evenings on WHRO TV15. In fact, one of my fondest memories is staying up late to watch Doctor Who, Fawlty Towers, and the like with my parents having a laugh and enjoying a cup of tea. With that said we are pleased to bring back an old friend while introducing a new one.

One thing we’ve learned — never refinish your antique table!

In season 2, twin brothers and ROADSHOW appraisers Leigh and Leslie Keno appraised a Seymour card table, ca. 1794 that was purchased at a garage sale for $25. The Kenos appraised the table at $200,000 to $300,000, and it later sold at auction for $490,000.

Makes us cry every time…

The appraisal of a Navajo Ute First Phase blanket, ca.1850 combines family folklore, a heartfelt reaction, and a “national treasure” of an item, making for a classic ANTIQUES ROADSHOW moment. Find out if the value has soared or sunk in “Vintage Tucson,” airing Monday, June 20th at 8pm ET.

Mom really is going to freak out!

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW kicked off its 20th anniversary season with a very super appraisal. A Spokane guest brought two comics from a $24 box of books, and they happened to be 1963 The Avengers comics #1 and #2. The popularity of these iconic superheroes don’t hurt the market value, with The Avengers #1 appraising for $4,000 to $6,000 at auction. The owner enthusiastically capped off the appraisal by giving credit where it is due, saying “My mom is going to freak out!”

Provenance, provenance, provenance…

This Eliza Law Custis lap desk, ca. 1795, featured in season 11, waspurchased for between $1,000 and $3,000 at a liquidation of a MountVernon, Virginia, collection. The collection belonged to a descendant ofCustis, who is in the Washington family, and many of the othercollection items had known ties to George and Martha Washington’soccupancy at Mount Vernon. The “ironclad” provenance helps bring thepresale auction estimate to $30,000 to $50,000.

Wait, they’re worth how much…

For season 19, ANTIQUES ROADSHOW visited New York City for the first time in over 10 years and discovered the highest value sports memorabilia find ever! The Boston baseball archive from the early 1870s included a handwritten letter with legendary signatures from Harry Wright, George Wright, and Albert Spalding—founder of the Spalding sporting goods empire. Leila Dunbar appraised the archive for $1,000,000 insurance value, choking up while declaring “It is the greatest archive I have ever had at the ROADSHOW.”

PBS Kids Go! Writer’s Contest

HRO recently welcomed twelve of the area’s most creative young minds into our studio for the

2016 Young Storytellers Awards, an event that congratulates local children for writing and illustrating their own original stories and submitting them in the PBS Kids Go! Writers Contest.

This year, we received nearly 400 entries from local students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Their stories could have been fact or fiction, poetry or prose. Stories were judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling, and integration of illustrations, and one first place and one second place winner were chosen from each grade level.

The winners and their families were invited to attend the Young Storytellers Awards Ceremony, where each child was honored at a special reception and recorded in the WHRO television studio reading their winning entry. All of the winners can be viewed presenting their creative stories in a WHRO Young Storytellers special on WHRO TV as well as online at http://tinyurl.com/zu357eg

t always tugs at the heart strings to watch videos of soldiers as they return from deployment. You can see the sheer joy in

the faces of the soldiers and family members as they reunite, particularly the ones where there is an orchestrated surprise reunion and mom or dad walks into a classroom or appears at halftime at a high school sports game. While we may have a picture of the sacrifices soldiers go through while serving their county by what we see on the news, what we often don’t see are the sacrifices the families make while a parent is deployed. One group in particular: military children.

According to the Department of Defense, there are over 2 million children of military parents in the United States. Estimates indicate that this population is amongst the most transient in our country. It is not unusual for a military child to attend up to nine schools before they graduate. In an interview with Task & Purpose, an online news and culture site geared toward the next generation of military veterans, one

boy says he thinks moving is cool, though he follows it up with he hasn’t lived any other way, moving is all he knows.

Military children with a deployed parent miss the chance to enjoy milestone occasions with both parents: birthdays, school performances, sports team wins, and much more. Though with today’s technology, showing a straight-A report card or playing a recital piece to a proud parent via Skype can help shorten the distance. However, having a parent away can result in more than just missing a mom or dad at family events. In the Task & Purpose interview, a young girl mentions she sometimes has to say no to invitations to spend time with her friends because she only has one parent at home to take care of the entire family.

Many of us cannot imagine what it would be like to have had one parent away, miss them, worry about them, and dream about the day they are back home. Fortunately,

there are organizations to help those who do. Organizations like:

• Blue Star Families helps military families with the challenges they face. • National Military Family Association offers programs for the families who stand behind the uniform.

• Military Child Coalition supports children affected by mobility, family separation, and transition.

Community Engagement

hile the human toll of a poor or incomplete education is apparent to most of us, the economic

impact falls not only on the individual but on the community as well. Numerous studies have shown that when youth don’t graduate from high school:

• They will earn $200,000 less than a high school graduate over their lifetime. And almost a million dollars less than a student who has graduated from college.

• The overall cost to taxpayers ranges from $320 to $350 billion a year in lost wages, taxable income, health, welfare, and sadly, incarceration costs.

What is even more concerning is that a student’s socioeconomic status plays a central role, often leading to an aborted high school education, and ultimately a continuation of the cycle of poverty. A new study examining this issue conducted by economic researchers at the Brookings Institute found a high correlation between income inequality

By Nancy RoganDirector of Community [email protected]

and increased dropout rates. By reviewing geographic data around graduation rates researchers noted that states with a higher rate of income inequality also exhibited higher dropout rates.

So why do students in areas with greater income gaps struggle more than youth in simply low income areas? The research suggests a concept described as economic despair. In a few words, a student’s perception about the distance between themselves and economic success can lead to a sense of defeat and despair. When the gap is perceived to be too great, the potential to reach anything approaching economic stability becomes unattainable. Though many young people dream about being a wealthy movie star or a sports legend regardless of their family’s income level, the data suggests that the gap between lower and middle income levels, not lower and upper, is the greatest challenge

How do we help these students move from despair to optimism? One way is to show students the relevancy of a high school

diploma and its importance in helping ensure a path to a rewarding career and/or college. Without a diploma, young people are not eligible for 90% of jobs today. They need to envision themselves as successful, and have a fuller understanding of what life could be after high school. Programs that focus on helping parents learn how to support their children, starting in early childhood, can also influence a child’s determination to stay in school. And many young people can benefit from a mentor, a caring adult who can help them realize their potential and understand that the investment in a high school diploma will pay off.

90% Graduation rate by 2020, Let’s Make It Happen.

The Starting Point of all Achievement is Desire
