    IampleasedtowelcomeDr.LisaKimbelltothecampusasournewDirectoroftheCenterfortheMinis-tryofTeaching,andtheRev.Charles

    FischerIIIwhoisservingasourDirectorofAlumni,AnnualFund,andChurchRelations.

    IamdeeplygratefultoGodforsomanypositiveindicatorsaroundtheSeminary.Justtohighlightafew:recentlymywifeandIentertainedtheMAinChristianEducationalumstoaSundayBrunchintheDeanery,whichwasfollowedbyaHolyEucharist.Theenergyintheroomwaspalpable;hereweregied

    GeneralConventionwasadelight,anditwastheperfectvenuetohonorthehardworkoftheRev.JosephConstantandlaunchhisbookNo Turning Back:The Black Presence of Virginia TheologicalSeminary,apioneeringstudyoftheAfricanAmericanexperienceatVirginiaTheologicalSeminary.OurJuniorsareenjoyingAugusttermandarellingthecampuswithlaughterandenergy.WearetrulyanationalandinternationalSeminaryasstu-dentsfromaroundtheUnitedStatesandtheAnglicanCommunioncomeheretostudy.

    Thisisgoingtobeaninterestingfall.

    TwoVTSstudentshavebeenawardedfellowshipsfromTheFundforTheologicalEducation(FTE),anational,ecumenicaladvocateforexcel-lenceinpastoralministryandtheologicalscholarshipthatawards$1.5millioninfellowshipsannually.

    Middler,TimothyC.Baer(MDiv,DioceseofOklahoma),wasawarded$10,000foreducationalexpensesandtofundaself-designedprojecttoenrichhisformationasaministe-rialleader.Junior,AudreyOBrien(MDiv,DioceseofMassachuses),willreceivea$2,000$5,000Congre-gationalFellowship,whichmatchessupportfromhernominatingcongre-gation,St.PaulsEpiscopalChurchinNatick,Massachuses.Bothstudentswererecognizedasyoungleaderswhodemonstrateexceptionalgisforministry.

    TwentypercentoftheClassof2012fallsintotheminoritycategory,fulll-ingoneoftheSeminarysgoalstobearaciallyandethnicallydiversecom-munity.

    Sixty-onepercentoftheenteringstudentsthisyearareworkingtowardtheMasterofDivinitydegree(MDiv),whiletheremaining39%arework-ingtowardaMasterinTheologicalStudies(MTS),aMasterofArtsinChristianEducation(MACE),aMaster

    ofArtsinChristianEducation/YouthMinistry(MACEYM),orareenrolledintheAnglicanStudiesprogram.

    mencement was held. Sixty-three

    diplomas were awarded and the com-

    mencement address was given by theRt. Rev. Barbara Harris, suffragan

    bishop, retired, Diocese of Massachusetts.

    andtheworld.Theworld,ormorespecically,theAnglicanCommunionmaynotunderstandandmaydisagreewithourChurchbutitisuptothepriests,

    pastors,teachers,scholarsandfaithfulchurchmenandwomenwhohavebeeneducatedatVTStohelpfosterhealthyrelationshipswithallthroughouttheAnglicanCommunion.As

    The Washington

    Theological Consortium

    (WTC) has announced

    that the Rev. Dr.

    Richard Jones, retired

    professor of Mission

    and World Religions

    at Virginia Seminary, will be the first

    recipient of the Al-Alwani Chair in Mus-

    lim Christian Dialogue. The Washington

    Theological Consortium is a community of

    theological institutions of diverse Christian

    traditions whose mission is to witness to

    Christian unity and to provide an ecumeni-cal context for equipping leaders while

    seeking a deeper appreciation of other

    world religions.

    OnvacationIgavethanksforadierentroutine;forthebeautyofourmountainhome;formyquirkybutbelovedfather-in-lawwhopassedawaythisJuly;fortheopportunitytopreachattheAugustinstallationofLonnieLacyatSt.AnnesChurchinTion,Georgia;andforthegenerosityoffamilyandfriends.Agrate-fulheartseemsrightforasummerdaythatisperfectineveryway.

    AndalthoughIwasfrustratedbytheen-tireprocessofGeneralConvention,itdid

    leavemewithoneabidingthought:manypeoplelovethisChurch.Iwasgrate-fulforsmallmomentsinAnaheim:seeinganoldfriend;havingadrinkandagoodlaughattheendoftheday;andbeinginspiredbyheavenwardmusicattheservicesofworship.GeorgeHerberthaswrien:Thouhastgivensomuchtousgiveonethingmoreagratefulheart.ThissummerIhaveoeredupHerbertswell-wornwordsinmyownprayersaboutmyownlifeandforthisSeminary.

    HereontheHolyHill,thereismuchthatcommendsthepracticeofgratefulness.

    Outofgratefulhearts,alumsandfriendshavebeengeneroustotheSeminaryinthelastscalyear,andweraisedarecordamount:$734,000.Itwasstilllessthanourgoalof$850,000buttheglassishalffullnothalfempty.Allgiving,restrictedandunrestricted,wasslightlyunder$2.2m.Thatsaverygoodyear:Wehavebeengivensomuch.Iamgratefulforthehard-workingteaminInsti-tutionalAdvancementwhokepttheireyeontheprizeinthisyearofconsider-ableexternaleconomicpressureandstressfulinternalrestructuring.

    Thiscomingyear,July1,2009toJune30,2010,wewanttomovetoward$2.1mforourunrestrictedAnnualFundfrom$734,000to$2.1m.Nowthatisaboldpracticeingratefulness!Weneedagreatnumberofpeopletogiveus$1,000ormoreandtherebybecomepartoftheTwenty-FirstCenturyFundatVir-giniaTheologicalSeminary.WearegratefulthatweareaSeminaryforthe21st

    Chris Northrup isthe new Leader-

    ship and PlannedGiving Ocer in theOce of Institu-tional Advancement.Northrup, whojoined the Seminarysta on August 4, isresponsible for increasing participa-tion in the seminarys planned givinglegacy society and will help developstrategies for cultivating major gifts.

    Northrup has been a professional

    fundraiser for the last ten years. Hewas the Director of Major and PlannedGiving at Shenandoah University.He solicited Shentel Corporationsdonation of $750,000 over ten yearsfor naming rights to the universitystadium, the rst corporate namingfor a Division III college athletic facilityin the country.

    Northrup was the Director ofDevelopment for the Virginia CollegeFund in Northern Virginia and served

    as a campaign consultant for manyorganizations such as The Evans Homefor Children, the Shelter for AbusedWomen, and St. Lukes CommunityClinic. He has served on many nonprot boards including WestMinsterCanterbury, (current), the Rotary Club,and Shenandoah Valley DiscoveryMuseum. He was head of the wor-ship committee while on the vestryat Christ Church Winchester. Prior toworking in sales, marketing, and fund-raising, Northrup began his career as

    teacher and coach at Sidwell FriendsSchool.

    Originally from Parkersburg, WestVirginia, Northrup was baptized andconrmed at Trinity Episcopal Church.He graduated from Kenyon Collegein Ohio and studied at St. AndrewsUniversity in Scotland and the Univer-sity of Virginia. Northrup and his wife,Robin, have four sons.
