TURN ON AND TURN OFF THE EXHIBIT

<<< Watch out for this highlight I will use in some

pictures to make sure you focus on the right place.

Firstly >> Face the exhibit with your back to Kauppatori.

There are two doors of the panel. One on the right leads to

the MAC MINI computer. computer that runs the “tour

video” and the “parking lot” sounds.

The door on left leads to the LAPTOP that runs the Jussi

Pajunen video + sounds of hammer + sounds of Kauppatori

and hotel pictures.

The things one has to do to turn the exhibit ON after you

switch on the mains, is v v simple. Dont be intimidated by the

interface or this manual, its v v easy once you do it.

Always go to the MAC MINI door first, because that has main power source the gives power to the LAPTOP as well.

Steps to turn on panel with MAC MINI ELEMENTS - Motu Soundcard, Mac Mini computer, Two monitor screens.

1.When you face the exhibition with your back to Kauppatori, the door on the right has the mac-mini. and the door on the left, the laptop.

2.Go to the right door, open it and you should see two extension current boards lying on the floor. One black and one white. Turn on the black one first and then the white.one. Black one has a green led that will light up and white one has red switch that will light up.

POINTS TO REMEMBER

1WATCH YOUR STEPThe connections, especially at LAPTOP section are very delicate and you need to slide in and out carefully.

2VOLUMEVolume can be adjusted by the speaker. On laptop side, volume control is on speaker that is above on desk, and on MAC MINI side, it is on speaker that is above on desk too. Volumes are configured except for “tour video” that is running manually, so you don’t usually need to touch these.

3 COMPUTERSThe desktop computer with mac mini, runs one half of installation and Laptop runs other half. They are running same software called puredata. They just look different since mac mini runs apple system and Laptop runs Windows system. We are running extended desktop, so make sure no open window/ browser/task bar from your side travels to exhibition screen side, if it does pull it back.

3. There is a BLACK sound card, very near to the black board that you just switched on. On the front panel of that sound card (MOTU - company make), there are several knobs one can rotate. But some of these knobs can also be PUSHED like a button. 4. The knob to the left of the display, labelled “Vol”, ought to be pushed. (and not rotated). If you push it, the device will turn on and a green display will glow. This should be ON before

5. On the desk, you will see the mac mini computer that looks like the figure below. Turn on the power switch, you can check where it is below. The chip lying next to it will light up, and the computer will boot. Wait till the screen comes up.





6. The subfolder where the program that runs the parking lot sounds should open up as a default. If NOT, then this is the path you should follow. >> Virka/Pduino-0.5beta8/. In “ Pduino-0.5beta8”, look for this file > maincarmain2.pd.All files items are in alphabetical order. Double click “maincarmain2.pd” It should launch the program that is needed to run the parking lot sounds. It will look like how it looks below. Concentrate on the window marked to the right. In your case it could be on the left, but it will look the same.

7. On this application, FIRST click close and then SECOND click ‘open 2’. It is v important not to mix the sequence. So, First click the “close” and only then click the “open.”

8. Check if you can see the window below is anywhere in sight, and choose it. If not then follow step 10.

9.You will see a list of numbers in “which analogIns to enable”.Take your mouse pointer to the place where it reads “0”. And Click it with your mouse pointer. There should be an “X” over it now as shown below.

10.(ignore this step if you did the checking “on” of ‘0’ above, ie step 9) If above window is NOT in sight, then on the page you are IN, look for the button highlighted below with red marker.It says “pd old analog/digital controls”.Click that button. This should launch the window, where you select/ X the “0” as shown above..as shown.

11. Now “parking lot” hatch should work or make sound of a car starting as soon as you open the hatch (the hatch between the video running “tour” and the Ballroom. Open door and check.

13. Go to Finder, or browse desktop to find the same folder from where you launched the file above. Which is > Virka/Pduino-0.5beta8/. Its likely it is there somewhere in background. Anyway, Shown below is “finder” icon (THAT should pop up when your mouse is taken to bottom of the window panel).. that will launch window, which in turn will launch a file browser from where you can open the video.

12. Within file browser path, or basically same folder from where you launched the previous patch..(Virka/Pduino-0.5beta8/), look for “ihan.mov” and double click it. This will launch the video. If its not playing, hit the play button.

13. Ihan.mov should play in its own default quicktime player. Sound will be on by default. Default volume on the quicktime player is set to “max” so, Slide the volume to the left to 50% so that its not too loud.Then, refer to diagram below and set two things. The LOOP of the video and the FULLSCREEN.* For setting the video in a loop, refer to diagram.Note: This needs to happen in particular sequence as explained below. On quicktime player that is playing our video, there are icons on the TOP. They mention “File”, “Edit” and then “View”. Click on “View”.- Select the option called LOOP. - then Drag the player window to the right side of the screen. It will pass “through” to the other screen. Do this until only part of video plays on YOUR screen,as shown in figure.- Go back to “View” icon on top of menu bar. Click on “View”, choose “Enter Full Screen”.- The video will dissapear to other screen, which is the one that people will see in exhibition.- Go to video hatch, open it, and check if its playing. If some part of window is visible on that screen that is exhibition screen, then you need to pull it back from your mac mini’s screen. Remember...

Once video is playing, on top of quicktime player you could see file/edit/view on top bar, click ‘view’

Enter option called LOOP

Grab video with mouse Pull it to right side of screen, till it 80% dissapears to the “other” side.

Now go to the same “view” option and hit “Enter Full Screen”.





This is where the file resides, in Virka/Pduino-0.5beta8/ hope you found it.

Steps to turn on panel with LAPTOP, the other section.ELEMENTS - Laptop running windows, NO soundcard, delicate wires.

1. The laptop lid should be open already, if not then lift lid. Start the computer “on” button. Press “enter” if it asks anything...until you see it booting all the way to a User Login window.

2. Enter your password - “virkainfo”

3. The windows will boot DIRECTLY to our application. So we wont have to open any folders

4. select the window shown below, in the many windows that are open.On this window shown below FIRST click close and then SECOND click open 3. It is v important not to mix the sequence. So, First click the “close” and only then click the “open.”

6. A0, A1, A2, A4, A5 will be already “X”. UN”X” them by clicking and then “X” each of them again.

7. Now all panels on that side should work. And hopefully whole exhibit.
