The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is designing improvements to US 41between Beneva Road and Stickney Point Road. This project is being constructed in twophases: from Beneva Road to Caribbean Drive and from Caribbean Drive to SR 72/StickneyPoint Road. The primary purpose of this project is to create a complete street that servesall users: cars, trucks, transit, pedestrians and bicycles. To improve motorist safety, medianopenings have been reviewed; and, in some cases these openings will be closed orrestricted.

The project is located on US 41 (SR 45) from South Beneva Road to SR 72/Stickney PointRoad (shown in purple on the map), in Sarasota. The project will be built in phases.Segment 4, the segment shown in green, construction will begin in Summer 2021. Segment5, the segment shown in orange, and the intersection at SR 72/Stickney Point Road,construction will begin in summer 2022.

In 2016/2017 a study was conducted to determine what improvements were needed to create a multi-modal corridor. This includes improvements for bicyclist, pedestrians, transit, and vehicles.

Project Background

In 2016/2017 a study was conducted to determine what improvements were needed tocreate a multi‐modal corridor. This includes improvements for bicyclist, pedestrians, transit,and vehicles.

Previous public involvement conducted for the project included meeting with MetropolitanPlanning Organization, or MPO, and their listed subcommittees.

In 2017, this project was presented to the public at a Public Information Workshop.

Restripe the 12’ travel lanes to 11’ travel lanes

The scope of the project’s improvements include:Resurfacing and restriping of the existing 12’ travel lanes to 11’ travel lanes. Thisresurfacing allows for the creation of the 6‐foot wide buffered bike lanes along withextending the life of the pavement.

The right turn lanes will be widened to provide 6‐foot wide bike lane “key‐holes”.

Construct 6-foot-wide concrete sidewalks on both sides of the roadway

Review driveway widths and reduce to meet current standards where required

Six‐foot‐wide concrete sidewalks will be constructed on both sides of the roadway. Thesesidewalks will also need to cross over the existing creek crossings.

Each driveway within the project limits was reviewed and the widths were reduced, ifneeded, to meet current design standards.

Modifications to the signalized intersections include: Replacement of the signal at SR 72 / Stickney Point Road Adjusting signal head locations at Gulf Gate Drive Add or adjusting the crosswalks Providing ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) enhancements Add intersection lighting

Corridor lighting Lighting already exists on east side of the road Add lighting to west side of the road

Modify drainage structures to accommodate improvements

Construct concrete bus pads and bus shelter pads in coordination with Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT)

Other project scope items include modifications to the signalized intersections at SR 72 /Stickney Point Road and Gulf Gate Drive. These improvements include:• The replacement of the signal at Stickney Point Road• Signal adjustments at Gulf Gate Drive• Adding or adjusting crosswalks• Providing ADA enhancements• Add intersection lighting

Corridor lighting was justified by a previous study and new lighting will be added to thewest side. The east side already has lighting.The drainage system will be modified to accommodate the improvements. In coordinationwith Sarasota County Area Transit, concrete bus pads and bus shelter pads will be installedalong the corridor.

The new typical section includes two 11‐foot‐wide lanes in each direction a 40‐foot‐widemedian and 6‐foot‐wide buffered bike lanes and a continuous 6‐foot‐wide sidewalks.

Median modifications will be needed at many of the existing median openings. A study inOrlando demonstrated that a right‐turn, then a U‐turn reduced the crash rate by 18% andreduced the injury fatality crash rate by 27%. A driver survey indicated that the U‐turns feltsafer than a left turn out and that traffic moved better.

There were a total of 484 crashes in the corridor between 2014 and 2018. 219 of thecrashes were from Beneva Road to Caribbean Drive and 265 were from Caribbean Drive toStickney Point Road. There were 78 total angle and left‐turn crashes which resulted in 35injuries. This project will reduce conflict points and improve visibility for turning vehicles. Itwill also provide multimodal safety including sidewalk, bike lanes, and transit connectivity.There were four bike and four pedestrian crashes resulting in three fatalities.

Each median opening was evaluated in order to determine what modification is needed toimprove safety. The graphic on the right shows the reduced number of conflict points whenchanging a full median opening to directional median opening. Most medians will bechanged to either a directional or dual‐directional median opening.

At the US 41 Stickney Point Road intersection the free‐flow right turn lanes will be removed. The islands will be removed and the curb reconstructed at all corners. The right turn lanes will be controlled by a signal. The reconstruction will create shorter crosswalks from curb to curb. A new signal will be constructed with new mast arms and intersection lighting with crosswalk lighting.
