Dear Friends of Catholic Charities,

On behalf of our Event Committee, thank you for joining us tonight for our first virtual Spring Celebration: Compassion Now. While this unprecedented public health crisis has forced us to physically distance instead of gather, your support for this event provides us with the ability to care for and give hope to those most in need during these trying times and comes with deep gratitude from all of us at Catholic Charities. You make it possible for us to serve.

This evening’s virtual event would not be possible without the tremendous assistance from The Cummings Foundation, whose admirable mission is “to support organizations dedicated to life-changing, equity-promoting, barrier-breaking, purpose-igniting work.” We are grateful to be recognized by The Cummings Foundation and all of our sponsors for our work to build a just and compassionate society, rooted in the dignity of all people.

Our 2020 Justice and Compassion Honoree Sister Norma Pimentel is the personification of compassion, dignity, empathy, and social justice. We were all excited and looking forward to having Sister Norma here in Boston to accept this award in person. However, in the midst of a global pandemic, we are grateful for the time she took to be part of this evening’s virtual event.

This is our major annual fundraising event and is successful because of your generosity. During this crisis we have been able to remain open to provide shelter and living assistance, put food on the table for families, and provide counseling, education, immigration services and other assistance to those who need it in our communities because of your support. Thank you for making our work possible. I would also like to thank our Event Committee for their commitment and encouragement as we made the decision to pivot into the uncharted waters of a virtual event. Their enthusiasm for this vision allowed us to gather tonight and share the inspiration and compassion we are seeing emerge throughout the crisis.

Once again, thank you all for your generous support. I hope you enjoy this evening’s program.

With warm gratitude,

Kevin M. MacKenzieBoard Chair and Interim President

May 19, 2020

My Dear Friends,

Thank you for joining us for Catholic Charities of Boston‘s first virtual Spring Celebration - Compassion Now. At a time when the Corona pandemic has so many of us practicing social distancing and working to keep people safe, Catholic Charities food pantries, legal services, shelters, adult education and youth programs have continued to serve a growing number of those in our community who need their help. For that reason, gathering virtually for tonight’s program is especially important. While doing our part to help mitigate the spread of Covid-19, our front-line workers have put their own health at risk to serve clients hit hard by job loss, illness or homelessness. We honor them for their compassion and determination to serve.

Tonight we also honor Sr. Norma Pimentel, the Executive Director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley with the 2020 Justice and Compassion Award. Sr. Norma’s work at the southern border with hungry, scared and poor families fleeing the dangerous existence in their home countries in South and Central America is a sign of God’s presence among us. We are blessed by her participation tonight and her inspirational caring words.

As the challenges facing our community grow daily in the midst of this unprecedented public health crisis, Catholic Charities seeks to act swiftly and steadily to meet these challenges. Please know of my gratitude for all your support to sustain this critically important work.

With assurance of my prayers for your good health and safety, and the same for your loved ones, I am,

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Archbishop of Boston

Guided by the moral and social teachings of the Catholic Church, Catholic Charities operates as a bridge to serve the greater community, regardless of religion, race, gender, age, disability or ethnicity, sharing Catholic values through service, compassion and care. One of the largest social service nonprofit organizations in Massachusetts, we serve 175,000 people in four key areas: basic needs, family and youth services, workforce development and immigration services. Catholic Charities exists as the Good Samaritan in our society by supporting individuals with basic needs while charting a path to self-sufficiency.
