What is virtualization?

Virtualization is the creation of a virtual (rather than actual) version of something, such as an operating system, a server, a storage device, an application or network resources.

You probably know a little about virtualization if you have ever divided your hard drive into different partitions. A partition is the logical division of a hard disk drive to create, in effect, two separate hard drives.

In computing, virtualization is a broad term that refers to the abstraction of computing or computer resources. This abstraction or hiding of physical characteristics leads to various scenarios, such as:

Server virtualization is where you use virtual machines to separate hardware from the virtual operating systems, allowing you to run multiple operating systems on single computer, all at the same time.

There are many different types of virtualization, such as server virtualization, OS virtualization, and storage virtualization. But they all aim to increase resource utilization, reduce operating costs, and build an agile IT infrastructure that is better able to support critical business needs.

For many IT professionals getting started with virtualization or using it on their desktop, virtualization is done with a general virtualization product like Microsoft Virtual PC/Server or VMware Workstation/Server.

But in datacenter, you are going to use a product like VMware ESX, Microsoft Hyper-V or Citrix XenServer. These are enterprise grade virtualization products.

What is virtualization?

There are two approaches to virtualization. These are:

Virtualization Management Layer.• Also called the hosted approach to

virtualization.

Dedicated Virtualization.

What is Virtualization?

Virtualization Management Layer Approach

This is how desktop virtualization and small server virtualization software applications works.

The virtualization software runs over the Host operating system. The VMs or the virtual machines run inside the Virtualization software.

The virtualization software has to interact with the host operating system to get hardware resources for the virtual machines.

What is Virtualization?

Dedicated Virtualization Approach

This is how enterprise virtualization and large scale virtualization software applications works.

The virtualization software runs over the hardware layer itself. The software interacts directly with the hardware reducing overhead. Multiple servers can be connected using the Management services.

The virtualization software has direct control of the hardware. The virtualization software IS the operating system and is loaded directly on the physical hardware. It is the Host operating system.

What is server virtualization?

Many Physical servers are consolidated into fewer virtual servers.

Termed P2V consolidation. This is where virtualization became popular and most widely used.

Many IT and business benefits are gained from this consolidation.

Examples for this are VMware ESX, Microsoft Hyper-V or Citrix XenServer.

We will discuss the benefits later in this sessions when we discuss “how server virtualization can help you?”

What is storage virtualization?

If you can virtualize your servers, why not virtualize your storage?

Removes the physical mapping of storage and moves storage into logical(virtual) objects.

These logical (or virtual) objects are much more easily managed.

Many benefits are achieved from the virtualization of storage – lower cost of storage, ease of data migration and less administrative burden.

What is network virtualization?

Internal network Virtualization Provides network functionality inside the virtualization software.

Examples: VMware ESX server and Microsoft Hyper-V virtual networks.

External network Virtualization Provides multiple network functions in external physical network

equipment.

Examples: Switches with VLAN capabilities.

It is a your area of virtualization and is yet to grow to its full potential.

What is Application Virtualization?

Virtualization of application so that they are encapsulated and are able to run on another system without actually installing them.

This allow any application to run without any conflicts, usually via streaming.

Examples: VMware ThinApp, Citrix XenApp and Microsoft Softgrid (now called App-V).

What is desktop Virtualization?

Desktop virtualization is also called VDI(virtual desktop infrastructure)

Desktop virtualization is the consolidation of desktop computers into virtualized server systems.

Clients connect to Virtual machines on the server using the management and administering software.

Examples: VMware VDM/View, Citrix Xen Desktop

What type of virtualization is right for you?

Various type of virtualization are all related in some way.

Implementation of one type of virtualization may require or drive needs to other areas of virtualization .

Type of Virtualization depends on your company’s business needs (devices, users, applications, geography, dynamics)

Every company (or individual) could benefit from some form of virtualization.

What makes server virtualization so appealing?

Fewer server and less infrastructure needed.

Ease of administrative burden.

Less Energy required = “Going Green”

Speed response to business needs.

Increased availability of servers.

Easier disaster recovery.

Lower overall cost and better Return of Investment.
