Syllabus This unit will introduce you to visual art specialisations through a number of thematically-based projects. In this unit you will be encouraged to explore ideas through material exploration and inquiry. You will be exposed to a variety of disciplines to develop your understanding of contemporary art practice.

Introduction Welcome to VSW13 Fine Art Studio Materials. This unit has been specifically written and designed to parallel our on-campus programs in the Department of Art at Curtin University. This unit creates and offers different learning experiences to enable you to work without the support of a full studio workshop. The program is not focused on the use of equipment, but on utilizing what is at hand in your local environment.

This unit will introduce you to some of the fundamental concepts and processes of contemporary Sculpture.  You are encouraged to adopt an interdisciplinary methodology. There are many possibilities within sculpture that can be explored by interrelating media and adopting a multi discursive approach. Think laterally, make connections, undertake serious play and be open to the unplanned and the unexpected. Above all enjoy your learning experiences.

There are set projects based on the theme Time and Space to assist in the development of your understanding of contemporary practices in Sculpture. The emphasis is on the exploration of ideas and creative visual inquiry. You will develop research methodologies and documentation skills through your study in this unit.

Unit Learning Outcomes All graduates of Curtin University achieve a set of nine graduate attributes during their course of study. Curtin's Graduate Attributes

Learning Activities There are five projects in VSW13 outlined in the Study Guide that will cover a range of sculptural practices and mediums. To develop conceptual understanding, all projects will be explored and researched under the umbrella of a common theme Time and Space.

Throughout the five projects, you will be required to undertake visual and artist research to provide and build your knowledge and expertise in the field of art practice. It is expected that you apply between three and five hours to complete each exercise. The rest of the time allocated for that week can be dedicated to your ongoing research to inform your work. To get the best experience in this unit your regular participation and contribution to the discussion room will enhance and develop your learning at a relatively good pace.

The exercises are intended to develop a particular idea or technical ability in relation to each project and within the broader subject presented. The exercises in the Study Guide are sequential and it is strongly advised that the presented order is followed as an understanding of each week’s exercises leads often to the next more challenging project.

The unit is designed for varied interpretations and approaches. This should promote diversity of expression; encourage individual thinking and creative problem solving. Think of the projects set merely as parameters guiding rather than directing. It provides a foundation of technical skills and a platform for which conceptual investigation for ideas can be further developed.

It is also important to be aware of the submission dates for this unit and allow adequate time to complete various exercises including the research of artists and artworks that support your practice.

 

Students are required to:

  Study Guide The Study Guide is specifically written for a fully online mode of learning. It provides the major content of your unit, with comprehensive instructions for the set projects and exercises that are required for you to successfully complete the unit. It is your primary guide to your learning and your engagement in a contemporary professional art course.

 

Set of Readings Blackboard includes a link to Curtin University library E-Reserve Collection where you can access your set of selected readings for the unit. The Set of Readings provide a selection of articles from a variety of sources to assist you in broadening your knowledge and understanding in contemporary art practice. Pass requirements

There are three  submissions required to complete the assessments in this unit. You must attempt all assessments and achieve a final grade of 50% or more to pass the unit. Fair assessment through moderation

Moderation describes a quality assurance process to ensure that assessments are appropriate to the learning outcomes, and that student work is evaluated consistently by assessors. Minimum standards for the moderation of assessment are described in the Assessment and Student Progression Manual, available from policies.curtin.edu.au/policies/teachingandlearning.cfm

Late assessment policy

This ensures that the requirements for submission of assignments and other work to be assessed are fair, transparent, equitable, and that penalties are consistently applied.

1. All assessments students are required to submit will have a due date and time specified on this Unit Outline. 2. Students will be penalised by a deduction of ten percent per calendar day for a late assessment submission

(eg a mark equivalent to 10% of the total allocated for the assessment will be deducted from the marked value for every day that the assessment is late). This means that an assessment worth 20 marks will have two marks deducted per calendar day late. Hence if it was handed in three calendar days late and given a mark of 16/20, the student would receive 10/20. An assessment more than seven calendar days overdue will not be marked and will receive a mark of 0.

Assessment extension

A student unable to complete an assessment task by/on the original published date/time (eg examinations, tests) or due date/time (eg assignments) must apply for an assessment extension using the Assessment Extension form (available from the Forms page at students.curtin.edu.au/administration/) as prescribed by the Academic Registrar. It is the responsibility of the student to demonstrate and provide evidence for exceptional circumstances beyond the student's control that prevent them from completing/submitting the assessment task.

The student will be expected to lodge the form and supporting documentation with the unit coordinator before the assessment date/time or due date/time. An application may be accepted up to five working days after the date or due date of the assessment task where the student is able to provide an acceptable explanation as to why he or she was not able to submit the application prior to the assessment date. An application for an assessment extension will not be accepted after the date of the Board of Examiners' meeting.

Deferred assessments

If your results show that you have been granted a deferred assessment you should immediately check your OASIS email for details.

Deferred examinations/tests will be held from 18/07/2016 to 01/08/2016 . Notification to students will be made after the Board of Examiners’ meeting via the Official Communications Channel (OCC) in OASIS.

Supplementary assessments

Supplementary assessments are not available in this unit.

PRESENTATION AND SUBMITTING FOLIO FOR ASSESSMENT

The format of your presentation should be well considered for the assessment of your work. It is expected that you learn to develop good documentation skills with digital photography to best present your work for online assessment. A submission which shows your working methodology and clearly presents your ideas and outcomes will help to present your work at its best. Use the Learning Resources to peruse the Guidelines and Examples of Presentations for VSW13.

It is a requirement that you sign and attach the Assignment Coversheet > Declaration and submit with your work for each assessment (digital or hardcopy).

  All project work and items for each assessment are submitted online via the unit ASSESSMENT DROP BOX wherever possible. Please refer to information detailed below:

When submitting your work for assessment, make sure you include all of the information in one single file. The preferred file formats for your submission are either: PowerPoint presentation (or similar), Word doc (or similar) or Adobe pdf file. Note: work submitted as multiple files will be returned to you to be re-submitted within a specified time-frame as a single file. If re-submission does not meet the required date as requested assessment penalties may be applied.

  Presentation and Documentation: To ensure you present your best images for assessment we suggest you experiment with different settings, especially as your intention should be to convey the best possible record of your work. The assessment of your work is compromised if the quality of images is poor: e.g. out of focus, badly lit, low resolution (150dpi recommended), or have been digitally manipulated. It is appropriate to crop images to reduce any background interference. Use a neutral background like a white wall or black/white paper to place your work on before photographing.
