Page 2PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEby Barbara Lukasiewicz, WLTBS PresidentDear Members of Women’s League, The past two years have passed quickly and on July 1st the 2013-2014 Women’s League Board will begin their term. As President, one of the many jobs is to select a Nominating Committee which will put together an exceptional team for the year to come. Having done this...next year’s Board will be a fabulous one with women of remarkable caliber! So, I congratulate this year’s Nominating Committee on a job well done as well as next year’s Board and Incoming President, Carole Kainen, who will lead the way! WL BOOK CLUB by Sharon Lancz “The Street Sweeper” THIS BOOK WILL BE REVIEWED IN AUGUST, DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED. For information, contact Sharon at 243-3151. “How breathtakingly close we are to lives that at first seem so far away. From the civil rights struggle in the United States to the Nazi crimes against humanity in Europe, there are more stories than people passing one another every day on the bustling streets of every crowded city. Only some stories survive to become history. Recently released from prison, Lamont Williams, an African American probationary janitor in a Manhattan hospital and father of a little girl he can’t locate, strikes up an unlikely friendship with an elderly patient, a Holocaust survivor who was a prisoner in Auschwitz-Birkenau. A few blocks uptown, historian Adam Zignelik, an untenured Columbia professor, finds both his career and his long-term romantic relationship falling apart. Emerging from the depths of his own personal history, Adam sees, in a promising research topic suggested by an American World War II veteran, the beginnings of something that might just save him professionally, and perhaps even personally. As these men try to survive in early-twenty-first-century New York, history comes to life in ways neither of them could have foreseen. Two very different paths—Lamont’s and Adam’s—lead to one greater story as The Street Sweeper, in dealing with memory, love, guilt, heroism, the extremes of racism and unexpected kindness, spans the twentieth century to the present, and spans the globe from New York to Chicago to Auschwitz. Epic in scope, this is a remarkable feat of storytelling.”

PRAYERBOOK: A Friday Night prayer book has been donated by Anita Lewy in Honor of Stan Mallin’s 90th Birthday

SHIVA MITZVAHAmong the many wonderful things that Women's League does is provide a Shiva Mitzvah for our members and their immediate family. At this difficult time of bereavement the family is contacted and if they wish, a light meal and beverages are provided after the funeral service. Women's League has made this commitment as a way to provide comfort and understanding to our sisterhood community. Diane Kaiser & Lois Joseph, Co-Chairs

Women of the Wall update:http://www.jpost.com/Jewish-World/Jewish-News/Compromise-reached-on-WoW-saying-Kaddish-at-Kotel-308712

It's been a great year. Our membership has grown to include so many wonderful women. We have worked together to increase our membership, to create many fun events, and to raise funds for our Jewish community. I have enjoyed sharing time with all the Women's League Members. These women are my friends and my sisters. We have two wonderful events left for the year. Please be sure to attend and to bring your friends. If you know of someone who has not yet joined, if they join now, they will be included as a member for this year through June of 2014. Finally, as Membership Vice President, I want to offer my deepest appreciation to all those who have been so helpful with the myriad of membership tasks over the past two years. I look forward to seeing all of you at Women’s League Shabbat and the Donor Brunch.
