Department of Commerce as you may know, is one of the premier centres of learning in the field of business in the country, and is renowned for its PG programmes. As a response to market imperatives, the Department initiated two new PG professional programmes in 1995, namely, Master of Human Resource and Organisational Development (MHROD) and Master of International Business (MIB). In this span of around twenty years, these two programmes have come to be recognised as well-regarded Master’s programme in Business Administration in the country. The nomenclature of the above two courses has been recently changed to MBA (HRD) and MBA (IB). The Academic Council and Executive Council of the Delhi University in its meeting held on July the 19, 2014 has approved the changed nomenclature of MIB and MHROD to Master of Business Administration (International Business) and Master of Business Administration (Human Resource Development).

Both the courses, viz. MIB (now restructured and renamed as MBA – International Business) & MHROD (now restructured

The course has been recognized as an institution with proven capability to continuously upgrade its knowledge base with a view to servicing the requirements of the government units, trade and industry. It is designed to enable students to bring success and add value to themselves as well as organizations in which they become stakeholders.

    Course IntroDuCtIon

Human Resource Development The success and sustenance of every organization traces back to its most core and prized asset: People! In today’s world, every major corporation which wants to stay competitive and survive in a dynamic and unforgiving global economic environment realises the importance of elevating HR to a position of primacy and power. In the liberalised framework of the Indian economy, corporate experts in human resource development are among the key personnel needed for corporate strategic planning and control.

The MBA program in Human Resource Development was started in the year 1995 by the Department of Commerce, Delhi School of Economics with the objective of providing quality education to highly motivated young men and women so that they can provide professional expertise to business and industry in the twin areas of Human Resource and Organizational Development. Identified by NHRD and NTPC as premiere course in the field of Human Resource, MHROD is a two-year full time professional program spread over four semesters, which combines grueling academic schedules with proactive efforts to develop new perspectives and a higher level of knowledge and understanding. Going beyond books, theories and case studies to open new windows, it helps young HR and OD experts to enter the increasingly competitive and constantly changing global economy, equipped with the ability to face every challenge head on and emerge victorious.

  • At Faculty of Commerce & Business, we value building relationships. We know that the purpose of a management institute is not just to develop graduates who are thorough with text-book wisdom, but to develop professionals who are aware of industry trends and practices and are prepared for rigorous corporate work environment. We know this is possible only by building and nurturing a long-term relationship between the corporates and our institute which can mutually benefit both.

The distinct relationship building activities serve their purposes in their own right. They are conducted throughout the year, some on a regular basis and others undertaken during an educational semester. The various activities that fall under the ambit of corporate relationship building process are the following.

    Corporate InteraCtIon

LIVe projeCtsThe basic premise of learning management principles is to be able to apply them in real life situations. A live project provides our students with a platform where they can apply the principles learnt in the classrooms and provides an opportunity for on-the-job training. These projects help to understand the finer nuances of the business and help the students locate their fields of interest. These live projects happen in tandem with the classes, so the students get a first hand experience of the rigorous work culture in the corporate world and thus get moulded to do multi-tasking.

  • IB-HRD Students’ Bodies The MBA wing of the Department of Commerce has completely student driven multi-organ bodies, overseeing operations and activities of the student run committees and societies. These committees are in turn entrusted with the task of the internal and external brand building of IB and HRD programs, through their joint efforts. They enable students to strike a fine balance between academic rigor and co-curricular activities & the resultant responsibilities which come embedded as part of brand IB-HRD. The active role in shaping the future of the program and with it the course they chart, through the extensive learning.

IISAC (Industry Interaction and Student Activities Committee) IB The constantly changing management paradigms, in response to growing complexity of the business environment, today, have necessitated business and human resources studies and industry to come closer. A productive interface between academia and industry in the present times of knowledge economy is a critical requirement. The Industry Interaction and Student Activities Committee (IISAC) fuels the exchange of ideas among students, academics, government and the industry. The committee is responsible for entering into alliances with different Industry Sectors/Consortiums with a view to develop the knowledge base of its students. Students Development Cell (HRD) Being a part of the global economy, which is ever growing and developing, it becomes imperative to keep up with its constant changes and developments. For this, we need to step out of the boundaries of our books, and learn from those who have had their hands dirty in this evolving business scenario. The Students Development Cell provides a productive interface between the academia and the industry and fuels the exchange of ideas among students, academics, government and the industry. The committee is responsible for entering into alliances with different Industry Sectors/Consortiums with a view to develop the knowledge base of its students.

The main aim of this cell is to prepare the students for the corporate world by engaging them into activities to give them

    27

  • insights of the real world corporate practices. HR Symposia is a 3-day corporate event which involves inviting esteemed speakers from the corporate to deliver lectures on burning HR topics of the day based on a central theme. Whereas, Conflux is the annual management fest with HR at its core, consisting of competitions, games and quizzes for students from all over India to think strategically and put the manager in them to test.

media and Public Relations Cell (IB & HRD) Sound communication practices are one of the basic ingredients in the process of establishment of an institution. At the same time long term growth hinges on a visionary and a pragmatic branding and promotion strategy. Media Cell at IB-HRD handles Communication and Branding & Promotion for the institution. This cell also manages the in-house magazines and journals which carry various articles and inputs contributed by the students, faculty members and the industry. Media cell has expanded its sphere of activities by coordinating and working in tandem with all other cells and committees. The other key deliverables of the Media Cell include:

Over the years, the journal has been widely circulated and has received appreciation from both corporate and academia. It is a compilation of articles, research based papers, interviews and case studies by stalwarts in their respective fields. The Finance Cell (IB) Finance Cell is the oldest Cell at IB and it helps the students to understand the finer nuances of business finance through various events and activities organized by it while preparing them for the world to come.

The cell has provided a platform for aspiring finance managers to integrate their classroom learning experiences with the pressing issues in finance through its annual magazine “THE FINSHASTRA”.

The theme of 2013-14 issue of The Finshastra was “How to innovate, what to regulate: achieving real change on the road to finance” and we had the honour of associating with oikos, New Delhi chapter for the same. Headquartered in Switzerland, oikos is an international student organisation for sustainable economics and management and a leading reference point for the promotion of sustainability change agents.

Along with The Finshastra, Finance Cell works on other projects throughout the year. We had a host of events, ranging from guest lectures, contests and remedial sessions, lined up to keep finthusiasts at IB on their toes. We had also conducted “Bloomberg Aptitude Test” by partnering with Bloomberg and a training session on Bloomberg terminal which further helped the students in enhancing their grip on numbers, facts and figures. We have also partnered with CFA Institute to get our students participate in CFA Institute Research Challenge.

  • The International Business Cell (IB) As the importance and impact of international business has increased, there is a commensurate need to identify its emerging issues and assess their potential contributions. The International Business Cell is a student-led cell that aims to facilitate MIB students in attaining valuable knowledge about global business practices.

mARCom (IB) Marcom - The marketing cell of IB is a student initiative that aims at nurturing individuals with distinctive imagination and originality, making them indispensable for any team that they work in. It provides an opportunity to the students to explore their potential in the field of marketing outside the classroom. We use tools such as case study competitions, quizzes and presentations to provide an unadulterated flavor of marketing to students. Our widely acclaimed student magazine ‘Brand.i’, invites articles from leading B-schools across the country and is an exciting platform to keep up with the rapidly evolving arena of marketing.

EnACTuS DSE SIFE was founded in 1975; the SIFE organization began in the United States. Today, SIFE India operates as a subsidiary of SIFE Worldwide and is one of 39 countries around the world that comprises SIFE’s premier business and higher education network.

SIFE Delhi School of Economics was founded in 2010 as part of SIFE India, and as a part of the larger SIFE International Network, follows the SIFE philosophy of “A head for business. A heart for the world” while applying business concepts to develop outreach programs that improve the quality of life and the standard of living for people in need.

Being a part of a SIFE project provides a rich learning experience for budding entrepreneurs- each project is replete with brainstorming sessions, field trips, surveys, drafting marketing strategies, et al. The role of the SIFE team begins with identifying a community, conceiving a profitable business plan for them, collaborating with NGOs , arranging for financial support needed to start the business, ensuring the business takes off, and in the process igniting in them the desire to strive for a better standard of living - which helps them persist after the team withdraws. All this, while keeping in mind that every SIFE project should have a positive environmental impact. Since its inception in 2010, the SIFE DSE team has successfully completed two projects:

    (1) Project Boond was undertaken in July’11 in Savda Ghevra, a resettlement colony on the outskirts of Delhi, with the aim of providing clean drinking water to the residents of the colony. Prior to the project, the residents were using unhygienic drinking water which resulted in regular visits to the doctor, especially in families with young children. As of June’12, 160 families have switched to using clean drinking water.

    (2) Project Udaan was our inaugural project in which the team created and launched a “Skills Development Training Program” for 16 students of an animation course run by an NGO called ANK. Post our intervention, placements of that particular course went up by 40%.

Knowledge Sharing Portal (HRD) Knowledge gives Edge, A complete and holistic approach to knowledge and ideas. To go above and beyond the call of formal education and into the realm of practical, viable information, that is the ethos of KSP. Team KSP aims at providing a purely knowledge based approach to Management Education.

Academics Committee (HRD) It started in the year 2006 with the aim of matching the course curriculum with the ever growing industry requirements. The working includes inviting the academic & industry experts to the campus to share their knowledge and gain a better insight on main topics. Usually the courses, thus conducted, are non-credit courses.
