Awards & Achievements
The Odisha Works received four “State Safety Awards” from The Directorate of Factories & Boilers
(DOFB), Government of Odisha” under the Government Award Scheme.
The Awards received under this Scheme were;
1. 1st Prize for “Lowest Severity Rate of Accidents” for the year 2014.
2. “Best Performance in Safety & Environment” for the year 2015.
3. 1st Prize for “Lowest Weighted Frequency Rate of Accidents” for the year 2016.
4. 2nd Prize for “Longest Accident Free Period” for the year 2017.
Further, the employees of Odisha bagged various awards under the Sponsored Award Scheme
from DOFB. The awards received under this Scheme were;
1. “Best Safety Officer of the State” for the year 2015 - Mr.Dillip Kumar Baral, Chief Manager-Safety.
2. “Act of Bravery for saving Life / Avoiding Accident & or Dangerous Occurrence inside the
Factory Premises” for the year 2015 - Mr.Prasanta Kumar Moharana, Assistant Manager-DM
Plant, Mr.Jitendra Pradhan, Operator-DM Plant, Mr.Sujit Kumar Swain, Fire Emergency Crew,
Mr.Tapan Kumar Mahanta, Fire Emergency Crew.
The Awards were given away, during the State Safety Awards function organized by DOFB, at
IDCOL Auditorium, Bhubaneswar, by the Chief Guest Sj. Susanta Singh, Hon’ble Minister of State for
Labour & Employees State Insurance Corporation, Govt. of Odisha, on 10th March. Smt. Anu Garg
(IAS), Principal Secretary, Labour & ESI Department, Govt. of Odisha, was the Guest of Honour on
this occasion.
The awards comprised of a shield and a certificate.

Achievement of Nava Bharat Eye Centre (NBEC), Paloncha
In the words of Dr. Gullapalli N. Rao, Founder-Chair, LV Prasad Eye Institute;
“The NBEC, Paloncha has done exceedingly well in the just concluded financial year with total
outpatients of nearly 35,000 and over 4,000 surgical procedures. These included some major
procedures like corneal transplants and stem cell transplants. Over 60 per cent surgeries were done
free of cost yet the cost recovery for operating expenses was well above 100 per cent. This way,
the Centre has become an optimal model for delivery of secondary eye care services.
Thanks to you for your continued support to keep the services current.”

Mr.M.S.R.K.Prasad, Senior Manager (Cane), Sugar Division, Samalkot, was presented the Sri (Late)
C.V.N. Raju Memorial Prize for the Best Extension Worker for the year 2016-17, at the 59th Kisan Mela
Celebrations held at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Anakapalle, on 29th January 2018. The
award comprised of a memento & certificate.
During the Financial Year 2017-18, 95,301 MT of Silico Manganese was produced by FAP (T), the
highest ever production achieved since inception of the Company.
During the crushing season of 2017-18, 4,64,583 MT of Sugarcane was crushed, which is the 2nd
highest in Sugar Division’s history. The highest Sugar Cane crushed in the history of Sugar Division
was 5,83,267 MT during the crushing season of 2006-07.

Our Pleasure
A two-member team from Toyota Tsusho
Material Incorporated, Japan visited our
Paloncha Works, in March. The team was
impressed with the housekeeping, greenery
and CSR activities of Paloncha Works.
The CSR Committee (constituted at the Board
level) consisting of Mr.D. Ashok, Chairman,
Dr.D.N. Rao & Dr. C.V. Madhavi, Independent
Directors, visited Paloncha Works, in January.
The Committee reviewed the status of the
implementation of CSR projects taken up by
the Company in and around Paloncha. As
part of the review, The Committee visited the
RO Water Plant at Machinapeta Thanda,
Kitchen established in association with
Akshaya Patra Foundation, Women
Empowerment Centre, Nava Bharat
Vocational Institute, etc. The Committee also
witnessed the demo on K-Yan, Hand Wash
facilities, Mobile Science lab practical classes
and the role play by students of
Supplementary Spoken English Course.
Projects - Domestic
Replacement of heating medium for
concentration of Spent Wash
The concentration of Spent Wash in the
Evaporation Plant was being done with the
steam generated from the 8 TPH Distillery
Boiler. Now the same is being done with the
vapours from the Rectifier Column of 20 KLPD
Atmospheric Distillation Plant. This has resulted
in savings of 1500 MT of coal per season.

Training A Workshop on “Fly Ash Utilisation” was conducted at Odisha Works, by Fly Ash Resource Centre (FARC), State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) Odisha, Bhubaneswar, on 12th March. Dr. D.K.Behera, Senior Environment Scientist, SPCB, Bhubaneswar, Dr.B.B.Dash, Regional Officer, SPCB, Angul, Mr.Shailendra Nayak, General Manager - District Industries Centre, Angul and Mr.Santanu Mishra, Advisor, FARC, spoke on this occasion. The representatives from major power generating companies, like NALCO, TTPS, NTPC, GMR Energy, JITPL, Bhushan Energy and Fly Ash Bricks Manufacturers Association of Angul & Dhenkanal, participated in the programme. Mr. Y. Pattanaik, Vice President & Mr.D.K. Baral, Chief Manager, Safety, of Odisha Works attended an International Symposium on Safety and Health 2018, titled “Vision Zero - From Problems to Practical Solutions” organized by Labour & ESI Department, Government of Odisha, in collaboration with German Social Accident Insurance and International Social Security Association, at Bhubaneswar, on 22nd & 23rd February. During the Symposium, stress was given on implementation of Zero Harm at the work place in all sectors including manufacturing.

Celebrations The 69th Republic Day was celebrated at all our Units with fervour, on 26th January. International Women’s Day was celebrated at the Women Empowerment Centre (WEC), Paloncha, on 8th March. On this occasion, apart from quiz & essay writing competitions on general topics, practical tests were conducted for the trainees in their respective courses. Prizes were given away to the winners, by the Chief Guest, Ms. Salma Baanu, District Welfare Officer. Speaking on this occasion, Ms. Salma Baanu, advised the trainees to make use of their talents and skills to earn their livelihood. She also appreciated the Company for creating the facilities and avenues for self-development of local poor women.

The “47th National Safety week” was
celebrated at all our units, from 4th to 10th
March. On this occasion, safety flag was
hoisted and safety oath was administered to
employees, school children and contract
workers. Various competitions, mock drills and
training programmes were conducted for
disseminating safety awareness.

Enhancement of Services at Nava Bharat Eye
Centre (NBEC), Paloncha
NBEC has been providing equitable
comprehensive eye care and high quality
cataract surgical services to people in and
around Paloncha, irrespective of their socio-
economic, religious or ethnic background.
However, to address the increasing
prevalence of non-communicable chronic
eye diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy
and glaucoma in and around Paloncha, the
Company provided the following equipment;
1. Optical Coherence Tomography – For
identifying Macular/ Corneal/ Glaucoma
cases.
2. Fundus Camera – To identify all posterior
segment diseases including diabetic
retinopathy and glaucoma.
3. Replacement of existing Operating
Microscope and Autoclave Equipment.
This has enhanced the capabilities of the NBEC
beyond cataract surgery and brought the
above services to the door step of the rural
community.

Establishment of Hand Wash Facilities
Inferior water quality & inappropriate hygiene
behavior is detrimental to the health of the
school going children. To overcome this
problem, the Company has set up Hand Wash
Facilities in 12 government schools, benefitting
3,000 students. The managing committee and
the students expressed their gratitude to the
Company for providing the above facility in
their school.

Financial Assistance for establishing Centralised Kitchen
The Company extended financial assistance as “Anchor Patron” to “The Akshaya Patra
Foundation” to establish a centralized kitchen in Kothagudem (Lakshmidevipally). The financial
assistance was extended for procuring the entire equipment needed for the Kitchen. This is the
first centralized Kitchen setup in Tribal area of Telangana State to support the Mid-Day Meal
programme of the Government and mitigate the twin challenges of hunger and education. The
programme enables increase in enrolment & attendance, reduce dropout and improve
nutritional status of students of the Government Schools by serving hot & nutritious food. The
kitchen can serve meals to 30,000 students.
The Centralised Kitchen was inaugurated by Hon’ble MLA of Kothagudem, Mr. J. Venkata Rao
in the presence of Mr. M. Ram Kishan, Joint Collector, District Level Officers, Mr.GRK Prasad,
Executive Director, Nava Bharat Ventures Limited (NBVL), Mr. Sreenivasamurthy, Vice President,
Paloncha Works, NBVL, Students of Government Schools, public and Media representatives. At
present the kitchen is supplying food to 22,255 students of 244 Government Schools situated in 5
Mandals viz. Kothagudem, Lakshmidevipally, Sujathanagar, Chunchupalli and Ramavaram.

The Company provided equipment for speech
therapy & physiotherapy, furniture and other
items to the following Schools in Paloncha &
Bhadrachalam, established for specially-abled
students;
1. Bhadrachalam Agency for Rural
Development Rehabilitation and
Educational Society for Handicapped
(BRESH), Bhadrachalam.
2. Angel Care School for the special needed
children, Oddugudem, Paloncha.
3. Shanthi Welfare Association for deaf, blind
and handicapped, Contractors colony,
Paloncha.
The Company provided kitchen utensils and
furniture to Old Age Home run by Manava
Seva Voluntary Organisation, Bhadrachalam.
The above gestures of the Company have
benefitted 350 specially-abled students and 80
helpless aged people.

Women Empowerment Center (WEC),
Paloncha, were awarded certificates at a
ceremony organized, on 27th March.
Ms.K.Ramadevi, President, Association of Lady
Entrepreneurs of India (ALEAP) graced the
function as Chief Guest. While speaking on the
occasion, she assured that ALEAP would
extend necessary help to the certified
candidates, to fulfil their aspirations.

NBEIL, Paloncha, distributed 3,800 mosquito
nets to the slum dwellers of surrounding
villages and tribal areas. Dr. K. Dayananda
Swamy, District Medical and Health Officer,
Bhadradri Kothagudem District, formally
inaugurated the distribution of mosquito nets
to the villagers at a function organized in the
Karakavagu Village, on 9th March. He lauded
the efforts taken by the Company for
improving the health and hygiene in the area.
A large number of villagers attended the
function. Mr.Venkateswarulu, Assistant
Malaria Officer, Dr.Rajkumar, Medical Officer,
Sekharam Banjara & Mr. Y. Sreenivasa Murthy,
Vice President, Paloncha Works, were also
present on the occasion.
A new course in “Garment Making
(Readymade Garment Making)” has been
introduced at the WEC, Paloncha. In this
course, training is given to poor women for
making different parts of a Garment. The 1st
batch of 40 women have been trained and
have taken up stitching of Uniforms for the
students of Nava Bharat School, Government
Schools and Contract workmen as part of their
on-the-job training.
The Paloncha Unit donated 920 dual desks to
45 Government Schools at a function
organized in Nava Bharat Public School, in
February. This will ensure a congenial learning
environment for 2,760 students. Mr. M. Ram

The Women Empowerment Center (WEC),
Paloncha, set up a stall at the Exhibition,
organized by Siddhagiri Kaneri Math, Kolhapur,
Maharashtra, in February. During this
exhibition, the WEC showcased the Palm Leaf
Products made by its trainees. The stall
attracted a large number of visitors.
“Safe Drinking Water Plant” near Factory
Premises and a “Bus Stop” at Masania Chowk
were established, by Odisha Works. The same
were inaugurated by Mr. Abanikanta
Pattanaik, Additional District Magistrate,
Odapada Tehsil, Dhenkanal, the Chief Guest,
during a programme organized, on 29th
March. On this occasion, aids for 70 differently
abled people were distributed by the Chief
Guest. The function was attended by the
employees and people of nearby villages.

Nava Bharat Schools, Paloncha, celebrated
the 39th Annual Day, on 27th & 28th January.
Mr.P. Trivikram Prasad, Managing Director,
graced the inaugural function as Chief Guest
and gave away the prizes. Mr. Y. Pradeep, an
alumnus of Nava Bharat Public School,
presented cash award to the student all-
rounder of Class X of the academic year 2016-
17 and also honoured the teachers with
mementos. Prof. G. Damodar, Adjunct
Professor of English, Satavahana University
attended the valedictory function as Chief
Guest. The students presented cultural shows
on both the days.
