Problem: Increased data growth leads to missed backup windows.

NetBackup Accelerator Benefit: Reduce traditional full backups to the speed and cost of incremental backups so the most demanding SLAs can be met.

New Features: • Acceleration of backup; files and folders • Eliminate the need to read entire set of files over and over during each full backup • Eliminate the need to walk-through entire file system during the backups

SYMANTEC VISION 2012

Client Track Log Files

The client track logs are key aspects of NetBackup Accelerator:

• The track log is specific for a given policy, client, master server, storage server, and backup selection.

• The NetBackup client track logs are circular files.

• The client track logs contain checksum entries for each file being backed up.

SYMANTEC VISION 2012

The NTFS change journal

• Is an optional feature that can be used with NetBackup Accelerator – Windows platform only

• Is monitored by NetBackup to determine which files and directories need to be included in a backup

• Eliminates the need to perform a full file system scan

• Maintains records pertaining to files and directories

• Has records identified by an update sequence number (USN)

• Are circular databases

• Is increased to one million entries

SYMANTEC VISION 2012

Additional NTFS change journal information

• Integration with the NTFS change journal does not guarantee that the NTFS change journal is used on every backup.

• The change journal data can be used with:

– Incremental backups: The Use accelerator option is enabled or not enabled.

– Full backups: The Use accelerator option is enabled.

• If the change journal data cannot be used for a backup:

– NetBackup reverts to a full file system scan.

– A message is logged in the Job Details dialog box for the backup.

Complimentary Technologies, Better Together

• Faster Backups

• Elimination of walking through all files at source

• Send only changed data to storage

• Eliminate sending redundant data in backups

• Functions across clients

• Encrypt backup streams at source for secure transmission

NetBackup Accelerator NetBackup Client Side Dedupe

NetBackup Accelerator and NetBackup Client Side Deduplication are complimentary technologies and work together on the same client to bring benefits from both features

From pricing perspective, both are available in the same SKU thereby helping customers realize the value of both technologies together for one price

Supported on major client platforms, please check NetBackup OS compatibility matrix

Supported on all file systems Supported file systems where OS is also supported

NetBackup Accelerator and Client Side Deduplication when used together provides global deduplication at the source while also speeding up full backups to the same level

as incremental backups.

Unstructured Data (Files and Folders) Backup

Target these use cases

Backing up file systems, especially the ones with less than 10% daily changes

Backing up NAS devices through NFS/CIFS*

SYMANTEC VISION 2012

NetBackup Accelerator NetBackup Side Deduplication

Run full backups at the speed of incremental backups. When file list changes or new clients get added the next full backup is not accelerated.

Data reduction irrespective of changes to file list or addition of new clients because of deduplication across all clients right at the source

Provides in-flight and at-rest encryption for backups

The ideal solution for remote offices/branch offices is to use the combination of NetBackup Accelerator and Client Side Deduplication to send only changed and deduplicated data that can be encrypted at source for secure transmission. Further, the combined solution provides support for databases and applications at ROBO

Remote Office/Branch Office Backup

SYMANTEC VISION 2012

NetBackup Accelerator vs. Optimized Synthetic Backup with Dedicated Schedule

NetBackup Accelerator Optimized synthetic backup with dedicated schdule

Configuration As part of full backup Need separate synthetic backup schedule

Support multi-streaming Same as regular backup 1. Need an initial full 2. Issues with ALL_LOCAL_DRIVE or dynamic

streams during incremental backup 3. Adding new client during incremental backup

Work with change journal Yes No

NetBackup Catalog efficiency

1. Inc catalog for inc backup 2. Transfer only inc change for full backup

Need full (TIR+)catalog for incremental backups

NetBackup Catalog structure

The same as regular backup File directory structure becomes scattered over time and makes file & folder restore difficult

Build for incremental forever

1. Improved file change detection 2. Built-in backup image checksum validation

Future extensibility 1. VMware BCT support 2. Oracle Incremental merge 3. MS SQL change tracking 4. NDMP with forever incremental 5. VxFS or other FS with BLI support

not easily extensible beyond file & folders

25 IM B30 - NetBackup Accelerator

Bottom line: If NetBackup Accelerator is purchased, there is no need to use Opt Synthetic backups with dedicated schedules

Accelerator Pricing and Licensing

• In order to provide NetBackup Accelerator support for all customers, both NetBackup Accelerator and NetBackup Intelligent Deduplication are sold using a common container SKU named NetBackup Data Protection Optimization Add-on/Option. Both features are turned on with this license, although it is optional to use NetBackup Intelligent Deduplication if the customer already has other backup storage that supports NetBackup Accelerator. Note that Data Protection Optimization Add-on/Option is not a feature name; it is just the name of the SKU that enables two features.

• Customers using former NetBackup Deduplication Option licenses are automatically entitled to use both NetBackup Intelligent Deduplication and NetBackup Accelerator features.

Symantec Competitive differentiation: Pricing

NetBackup Accelerator + NetBackup Intelligent Dedupe

• Both are included in the same SKU, the customer gets both Accelerator and NetBackup Intelligent Deduplication from the same price per FETB

• Single-pane-of-glass management = low operating costs

NetBackup Accelerator +

3rd Party OpenStorage devices*

• Devalues Third Party OpenStorage devices as most of the data reduction is already done by NetBackup Accelerator

• Devalues Third Party OpenStorage devices as NetBackup Intelligent Dedupe is already included in the SKU for Accelerator for the same price

• Multiple management interfaces = high operating costs
