AUGUST 29, 2021 22 SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Scripture Insights All of today’s readings illuminate God’s call to wholehearted obedience. Deuteronomy 4 names two purposes of God’s holy law: one purpose fac-es inward, intended for the flourishing of Israel; one purpose faces outward, intended for witness to the world. For Israel, God gave the law “that you may live.” As the psalmist writes, whoever fol-lows the law will live well: in peace, without dis-turbance. The law is not to restrict followers but to set them free for a life of true abundance. As for the world, the law was given to Israel so that they could bear witness that their God’s wisdom and kindness surpass all other nations’ gods. The law illuminated the Israelites so that they might shine brightly, drawing other nations to Israel’s God. James picks up on the theme of fruitful obedience and applies it to Christians. He uses three meta-phors to show how intertwined our lives are with God’s “word of truth” (that is, the Scripture, or God’s law): we are the infant children of the Word; we are like the first figs blossoming on the Word’s tree; and we are the soil in which the Word is planted. Our lives are bound up with God’s Word in such a way that to hear the Word without living it out would be to turn away from our parent, to wither on the tree, or to dry up and crack as desert soil. Finally, Mark’s Gospel warns that obedience to the law must be deeper than mere observance. Our obedience should be inward, coming from hearts turned toward God. Mark warns, rather lit-erally, against paying “lip service” to the law without loving God with the heart. The purpose of God’s holy law is inner transformation leading to abundant life. Does the honor that you give God come from

your heart? Can our observance of God’s holy law today

serve as a witness that draws outsiders closer to God?

How are you a “doer of the word”?

CORONAVIRUS PRAYER

Let Us Pray: Loving and faithful God, the coronavirus reminds us that, we have no power and we are dependent on You and You alone. We place ourselves in Your mighty and loving hands. Merciful God, please give eternal rest to all who have died from the virus. Loving God, please put your healing hand on those who are ill in the vari-ous hospitals and at homes, and give your protec-tion to us in this time of fear and uncertainty. Eternal God, please calm our fears and help us to trust You as our faithful and true God. Mighty God, please enlighten our government leaders as they are faced with important decisions. Give Your blessing to those in health care and our first re-sponders and protect them.

PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF INFECTION

School in now in session and your child is in close contact with their peers (hugging, kissing, swapping pacifiers and bottles). Follow these tips in teaching your children to protect themselves against the many infectious diseases they may come in contact with: Wash hands: teach your children to wash their hands with warm soap and water for 15-20 seconds before and after meals and after going to the bathroom. Use hand sanitizers after handling classroom objects and toys (you are asked to send hand sanitizer to school, make sure your child knows to use it). Hand washing is the #1 way to prevent the spread of may infections. Sneezing/coughing: Teach your children to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue (throw the tissue away immediately) or cough and sneeze into their sleeve. (Many infection are air borne and are spread through coughing and sneezing). Encourage your child to stay away from people who are sick. Keep your child at home and away from other peo-ple when they are sick (sending a sick child to school eposes others to viruses and diseases, they are in a closed space in close contact with their peers. Have a child care plan in the event your child becomes ill). Remember to have your child immunized with the FLU vaccine. References: Centers for Disease Control If you need more information about Preventing In-fections or Keeping Children Healthy, please call or visit the Health & Wellness Ministry located in the Misaada Center.

BIBLE STUDY

“He responded. ‘Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written: ‘This peo-ple honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; In vain do they worship me, teach-ing as doctrines human precepts.” Mark 7:6-6 Don’t Give Me Lip Service! Many waive Ameri-can flags and claim to be patriotic Americans. Yet only 0.4 percent of the population of the United States are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. Only 7.3 percent of all liv-ing Americans have served in the military. Mar-cus Garvey, a leader of the Pan African Move-ment in the 1930s warned, “You must not mistake lip-service and noise for bravery and service.” In these days of polarization and racial insensitiv-ity, we would do well to avoid the noise of those who give lip service to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Many use the Gospel of Jesus Christ for political, financial and personal gain. We would do well to be aware that the evil of selfishness, like a roaring lion, roams this earth seeking someone to chew up. Let us choose to love others and bravely risk our-selves in the service of others. Lip service is hypocrisy, that is, saying one thing and doing another. This Sunday, he first reading and the Gospel tell us that God is not pleased with pious words that come from a corrupted heart. In the first reading, Moses reminds Israel that the purpose of the Commandments is to bring them nearer to God. The commands of God are the Heart of God. The purpose of our obedience to the Commandments is to join our hearts to the Heart of God and our will to the Will of God. Obedience, not “lip Service” to the Commandments of God, is essential to maintain-ing a right relationship with God (vv. 1, 5, 14, 21-22, 40). Obedience is an act of love. Laws and religion become ends in themselves when we for-get their real purpose. Note that taking posses-sion of the “Promised land” (v. 5) was not a re-ward for obedience. It was a natural conse-quence of living in God’s presence. It was and is tangible evidence of God’s Heart beating with ours. Today, God tells us, don’t give me lip ser-vice. DISCUSSION QUESTION: How do you de-fine hypocrisy? Give an example of faithful ser-vice.
