SCRIPTURE INSIGHTS “My child,” writes the author of Sirach, “conduct your affairs with humility, and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts.” Humility is a distinct-ly Jewish virtue and one that Jesus embraces as the foundation of his teaching on the Kingdom of God. Jesus often uses the image of a banquet to offer a teaching about the kingdom. The poor of Palestine could only dream of a banquet. The overflowing abundance of food and wine was be-yond their hope. With this image, Jesus promises the poor that they are the chosen guests at God’s banquet. God has a preference for the lowly and only those who acknowledge their lowly status in relation to God and to others will be embraced at the banquet of eternal life. Many places in the Scriptures show that Jesus lived humility: “Learn from me for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves” (Matthew 11:29). “The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28). Humility defines Jesus’ life and teaching and so it should define Christians’ lives, too. In relation-ship with God, humility defines us as dependent on God for everything; in relationship with oth-ers, humility defines us as servants to others. St. Augustine identified humility as the defining virtue of a Christian way of life, “This way con-sists, first of humility, second of humility, and third of humility. No matter how often you would ask me, I would say the same” (St. Augus-tine Letter 118). ♦ How do you define humility? ♦ Why would the image of a banquet be so sig-

nificant to the people who heard Jesus’ mes-sage?

♦ Why do you think that humility is such a sig-

nificant virtue for a Christian?

OUR FAMILY PRAYER

Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the

prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness.

We come to you,

Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence,

murder and racism.

We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of

Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people.

Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence.

Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to

be a voice for life and human dignity in our community.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady of

Prompt Succor, hasten to help us.

Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family.

Liturgy of the Word for Children

This Ministry will resume, Sunday, September 8th at the 10:00 am Mass. This is a part of the Sunday Mass where school aged children 3-year old to 3rd grade are dismissed from Mass for the readings. The children are called forth after the opening prayer and are lead to the School library with Cat-echist to hear the readings proclaimed and dis-cussed in a way they can understand. The chil-dren are reunited with their family and the praying community after the homily before the offering. This is done through engaging discussion and ac-tivities. Volunteers must have Safe Environment Training with the Archdiocese of New Orleans.

GET OUT THE VOTE CHURCH: St. Peter Claver Church needs you help to get out the VOTE: Abolitionist Freder ick Douglass said “I prayer for freedom for twenty years, but received no answer until I prayed with my legs.” We have a responsibility to com-bine faith, prayer, and action in our Catholic jour-ney for a more peaceful and just world. St. Peter Claver Church Health & Wellness Ministry

Preventing The Spread Of Infection

School is now in session and your child is in close contact with their peers (hugging, kissing, swapping pacifiers and bottles). Follow these tips in teaching your children to protect them-selves against the many infectious diseases they may come in contact with: Wash hands: teach your child to wash their hands with warm soap and water for 15-20 sec-onds before and after meals and after going to the bathroom. Use hand sanitizers after handling classroom objects and toys (you are asked to send hand sanitizer to school, make sure your child knows to use it). Hand washing is the #1 way to prevent the spread of many infections. Sneezing/ coughing: Teach your child to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue (throw the tissue away immediately) or cough and sneeze into their sleeve. (Many infections are air borne and are spread through coughing and sneezing). Encour-age your child to stay away from people who are sick. Keep you child at home and away from other people when they are sick (sending a sick child to school exposes others to viruses and dis-eases, they are in a closed space in close contact with their peers. Have a child care plan in the event your child becomes ill). Remember to have your child immunized with the FLU vac-cine. References: Centers for Disease Control If you need more information about Prevent-ing Infections or Keeping Children Healthy, please call or visit the Health & Wellness Min-istry located in the Misaada Center.
