T M H T JUNE 7, 2020 Scripture Insights

Today’s Responsorial Psalm from Daniel 3 comes from a hymn of praise sung by three Jews who were exiled to Babylon and put into a fiery fur-nace for refusing to worship a golden statue but were not burnt. God’s people have not always been so resolute against idolatry, however. In Exodus 34, Moses is instructed to make two new tablets of the cove-nant because he angrily broke the former tablets when he saw the people worshipping a golden calf. Like the people who want a more concrete and visible image for God in the absence of Mo-ses, Moses seems to have trouble following a God whom he cannot see (Exodus 33),, so he asks to see God’s face (cf. Exodus 33:12-13). Despite all of this, God makes a point to repeat the covenant and ask Moses to remake the tablets to affirm that God is “merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and rich in kindness and fidelity.” We see God’s love emphasized also in John 3. Note here that oft-articulated but utterly mistaken idea that there is a God of wrath in the Old Testa-ment but a God of love in the New. In fact, it is difficult if not impossible to capture the God of the Bible in a single sentence. After all, today’s Gospel mentions God’s decisive condemnation of unbelievers. Likewise, the “merciful and gra-cious” God of Exodus 34 is also a “jealous God” who tells Moses that he must drive out people who are already populating the Promised Land (Exodus 34:11, 14). This, like the pronounce-ment of condemnation in John 3, is very different from the call to “live in peace” in 2 Corinthians 13. ♦ What may idolatry mean or involve besides

the casting of idols? ♦ The word Israel means wrestling with God.

How might that describe God’s people today? ♦ How might steadfast love for others bring

about peace?

St. Peter Claver Catholic Church WELCOMES

Seminarian Ross Reynolds

Ross Reynolds will be spending the summer here at our Church. He is excit-ed to get to work in our parish and grow in knowledge of what the life of a diocesan priest entails. He is entering his third year as a seminarian and has been greatly blessed on this road to the priesthood.

He will share his story with us and learn all that makes this parish the great family that it is. Through the intercession of our Blessed Mother and St. Peter Claver, be assured of his prayers for you and your families during these troubling times. Through the help of God, we will make it.

CORONAVIRUS PRAYER

Let Us Pray: Loving and faithful God, the coronavirus reminds us that, we have no power and we are dependent on You and You alone. We place ourselves in Your mighty and loving hands. Merciful God, please give eternal rest to all who have died from the virus. Loving God, please put your healing hand on those who are ill in the vari-ous hospitals and at homes, and give your protec-tion to us in this time of fear and uncertainty. Eternal God, please calm our fears and help us to trust You as our faithful and true God. Mighty God, please enlighten our government leaders as they are faced with important decisions. Give Your blessing to those in health care and our first responders and protect them. We ask this in faith, for You are God, living and reigning forever and ever.

CENSUS 2020 HEAR ME. SEE ME. COUNT ME.

STAND UP AND BE COUNTED! In this New COVID – 19 environment Louisiana desperately needs every federal dollars we can get. Funding for Education, Healthcare, Affordable Housing, Public Safety, Street and Infrastructure Repair is determined by census data. Programs such as Childcare Assistance (CCAP), Head Start, Medicaid and Medicare, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), WIC, FEMA, Foster Care programs and Affordable Housing depend on these federal dollars. Your participation guaran-tees more resources coming to your communi-ty!! For each person who goes uncounted Loui-siana loses $2,291.00 each year for 10 years. That is a lost to our communities as well. That’s less money for our children, the elderly, hospitals, streets, pumping stations, police and fire stations. Can we count on you to complete your census either online, by phone or mail? 9 Questions + 10 Minutes = 10 years of funding. Convince five (5) family members or friends to complete their census as well.

Micah Project St. Peter Claver Team along with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Power Coalition are working together to be sure our com-munities are in the 2020 Census #

We will be contacting you soon. Complete the Census: By Paper with the Census form that was mailed to your house; Online at My2020census.gov; By phone : 1-844-330-2020.

Lord Jesus, Son of the Eternal Father, and Mary Immaculate give to our young people the gener-osity necessary to follow Your call and the cour-age required to overcome all obstacles to their vocation. Give to parents that faith, love and spirit of sacrifice which will inspire them to offer their children to God’s service and to rejoice whenever one of their children is called to the priesthood or religious life. May Your example and that of Your Blessed Mother and Saint Jo-seph encourage both young people and parents and let Your grace sustain them. AMEN.

ST. PETER CLAVER HEALTH CORNER

MEN’S HEALTH June is the month we celebrate not only Fa-ther’s Day but also men’s Health. It’s time for our men to become informed and proactive about their particular health risk. Consider these statistics: Compared to women, men have higher death rates for all 15 leading caus-es of death (except Alzheimer’s disease) and die more than five years younger. Represent 50% of the work force yet account for 94% of all on the job fatalities. Know less about health, and take less responsibility for it. Are less likely to see themselves as ill or suscepti-ble to disease or injury when they are most sus-ceptible. The biggest threats (Heart disease, Cancer, HIV infection, Unintentional injury, Respiratory Infections, Stroke, Diabetes, Suicide/Homicide) to men’s health can often be prevented. Here’s what you need to know to live a longer, healthier life. Reduce your risks: Start with healthy life-style choices-eat a healthy diet, stay physi-cally active, quit smoking, get regular checkups (talk to your doctor/ask questions) get cancer screenings (colorectal, lung and prostate) and take precautions in your daily activities to prevent accidents and injury. The impact may be greater than you’ll ever know. If you need more information about diseases or conditions that plague men—please call or visit the Health & Wellness Ministry located in the Misaada Center. Office Hours: Tues. 10:00 a.m.-12:00 noon. OUR FAMILY PRAYER

Loving and faithful God, through the years the people of our archdiocese have appreciated the prayers and love of Our Lady of Prompt Succor in times of war, disaster, epidemic and illness.

We come to you,

Father, with Mary our Mother, and ask you to help us in the battle of today against violence,

murder and racism.

We implore you to give us your wisdom that we may build a community founded on the values of

Jesus, which gives respect to the life and dignity of all people.

Bless parents that they may form their children in faith. Bless and protect our youth that they may be peacemakers of our time. Give consolation to those who have lost loved ones through violence.

Hear our prayer and give us the perseverance to

be a voice for life and human dignity in our community.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Our Lady

of Prompt Succor, hasten to help us.

Mother Henriette Delille, pray for us that we may be a holy family.

Bible Study Quote… It’s All About Love...How do you say goodbye to fr iends that you love as you part company for a time? Perhaps you wish them the love and peace of Christ in eve-rything they encounter until you meet again. This is what St. Paul does in the verses we read for this Sunday. These three verses are the last verses of St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians. This letter may have been written during his third missionary journey from the City of Ephesus. It contains Paul’s spiritual advice and encouragement of them to develop their faith in Jesus the Christ. He gen-tly reminded them of their faults and reinvigorated their need to repent (v.11). He pleaded with them to live in “love” so that the God of love and peace could inhabit them. At the celebration of the Eu-charist, he reminded them to greet each other with true love and with the “Pax”, the “Kiss of Peace.” St. Paul wished the entire Trinitarian Blessing on the church in Corinth. He wished that they accept the grace of Jesus Christ, the love of the Father, and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that they re-ceived in Baptism. What a blessing filled with love! DISCUSSION QUESTION: How do you say goodbye to someone you love?
