Please support the 2008-2009 Annual Fund Campaign

Your gift to Coe-Brown Northwood Academy’s Annual Fund directly benefits the students at CBNA. This year’s Annual Fund will support the purchase of interactive white boards for the Academy’s classrooms. Interactive white boards combine computer technology with a presentation board to fully engage students in classroom learning. One of these amazing devices is already in place at Coe-Brown and the reaction from both teachers and students has been overwhelmingly positive. “This tool revolutionizes the classroom,” says CBNA math instructor Walter Damon. “The white board is incredibly versatile and allows me to engage my students in new and innovative ways.” Our fundraising goal for this year is $36,000 and the Annual Fund closes June 30, 2009. Your gift truly helps!

You can use the enclosed pledge envelope to send your gift or, if you prefer, you can donate on line at www.coebrownacademy.com. Either way your gift is 100% tax deductible and helps ensure a bright future for Coe-Brown Northwood Academy.

2 Visions — Fall 2008

A letter from Headmaster Smith

Dear friends,

I hope you all enjoyed the summer season. In June we said farewell to the Class of 2008, a group of 172 bright and talented young people who left a positive mark on Coe-Brown and who will, no doubt, go on to make equally positive contributions to society.

The Academy bustled with activity throughout June, July and August with a number of projects, including the construction of a new elevator that will provide improved access to the various levels of the main academic building. Several faculty members took courses or participated in educational programs and special projects. And, as always, the administrative and guidance offices were busy with preparations for the 2008-2009 academic year.

Please join me in offering congratulations to our assistant headmaster, Paul W. Davis, Jr., who recently marked 30 years of service with Coe-Brown. His contributions to the Academy, both as an instructor and an administrator, are countless. Mr. Davis is a vital part of the Academy and I am proud to work side by side with him on a daily basis.

On behalf of the Academy, I extend a warm welcome to several new staff members: Jen Cox, guidance counselor; Beth Mennelle, English teacher; Karen Bailey, athletic trainer/paraprofessional; Susan McLean, math teacher; Christian Gompert, English teacher; and Antony DePalma, English teacher.

On August 15 we welcomed the Class of 2012 with a walk through of their schedules, a barbecue lunch and a series of team-building and ice-breaking activities. On August 18 school officially opened for all 687 students. The breakdown is as follows:

Class of 2009 – 162 (81 males 81 females)Class of 2010 – 170 (79 males 91 females)Class of 2011 – 177 (89 males 88 females)Class of 2012 – 178 (87 males 91 females)

Our goal for these students is to promote learning outcomes that meet high academic standards, create an environment that fosters an appreciation of lifelong learning and personal responsibility and to support mutual respect for peers, faculty, administration, the community and the environment.

One of the ways we accomplish this goal is by ensuring that the Academy stays at the forefront in the use of its technology in the classroom. Last year, with your help, we were able to purchase a mobile computer cart equipped with 24 laptop computers. This year we are seeking your assistance in helping us to obtain interactive, electronic white boards for our classrooms.

I thank you for all you do to help us achieve our mission and for remaining a part of Coe-Brown Northwood Academy’s past, present and future.

Sincerely,

David S. Smith

Headmaster Smith bids a fond farewell to 2008 graduates Erika Johnson and Daniel Foley.

Headmaster David Smith and CBNA Trustee Bunny Behm congratulate Assistant Headmaster Paul W. Davis, Jr., on his 30 years of service to the Academy.

Ethan Alexander Howe of Nottingham, a member of Coe-Brown Northwood Academy’s Class of 2008, was the first recipient of the Nathan C. Lake Memorial Scholarship. The amount awarded was $10,000. Alex began studying cellular and molecular biology at San Diego State University this fall.

The Nathan C. Lake Memorial Scholarship was established by Mr. Lake’s family following his death in July 2007. Mr. Lake was a resident of Strafford and, with his wife, Anne, ran Berrybogg Farm for more than 30 years.

“We chose to start a scholarship in Nathan’s name because education, both formal and informal, was an integral part of who Nathan was,” says Anne Lake. “His parents struggled financially to send him to Lafayette College as so many parents do today but they did

what they had to do and Nathan lived his life always grateful for the opportunity. We have lived in this community for more than 35 years and over the years we have had the pleasure of employing many Coe-Brown students in our blueberry fields. We were always impressed with how many of the students were college bound and spoke highly of Coe-Brown. Our family hopes this scholarship will help students realize their dream of college and foster a lifelong love of education, which is how Nathan lived his life.”

The family and friends of Nathan Lake contributed more than $69,000 to establish the Nathan C. Lake Memorial Scholarship Fund. For information about establishing a memorial scholarship, contact the Development Office at 603-942-5531, ext. 186, or e-mail [email protected].

had forgotten how much fun it is to have a teenager in the house!

About five years ago I joined an investment club and have really enjoyed it. I have taken several classes on how to analyze stocks, asset allocation, etc. We have a financial planner that has been great in helping me learn about our own portfolio.

What specific class or teacher do you remember from Coe-Brown?

I remember the teacher that taught geometry, Ralph Fitts. He had been teaching at the college level so he was often way over our heads. We used to gather around the kitchen table at home in the evening and my mother would help us get the assignments completed. The one thing that I do remember about him was his thought that, “You can learn from the books but you must have the common sense to go with it or it’s worth nothing.” How true, and I have

4 Visions — Fall 2008

Visions profile: a visit with Ann Price Gifford ’49

Ann Price Gifford, a member of the class of 1949, is a strong supporter of CBNA’s Annual Fund. She lives in California where she still works full time for Boeing. We interviewed Ann recently, to learn more about her busy life and her lengthy career with the nation’s foremost aerospace company.

Tell us about your career at Boeing: How long have you worked there? What does your position entail?

I joined Boeing (formerly McDonnell Douglas) on April 1, 1968. I just completed my 40th year at the Space Division in Huntington Beach, California. My first few years were spent working on actual analysis, operating plans and five-year projections (all done on hand spread sheets). As technology advanced I worked on various overhead analysis programs and then moved into the rate management area. For several years I managed Boeing’s Overhead/Rate Management Department. About 10 years ago I moved back to a senior analyst position and spent most of my time mentoring some of the younger employees or doing special assignments. Today I am maintaining the complex structure tables for the overhead analysis program as well as doing many trouble-shooting assignments. I’m classified as a system expert so I get many calls. I don’t always know the answer but usually know who to contact!

When did you relocate to California?I came from Northwood to California in 1952 and

have been here ever since. I met my husband, Jim, through his uncle while working in Corona. We were married on November 1, 1957. We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary last year by having some extensive remodeling done on our home. We’re still working on that project but hope to be done for the holidays.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? We lead a very busy life—we are both still working full

time. My husband, Jim, has been on dialysis for the past six years so that takes three evenings a week as well as special dietary restrictions. I can lose myself in a good book—just let the dishes wait! We are active in the local Presbyterian Church. Although I do not serve as an official deacon, I do many things to help: I visit a 103-year-old member each week who is in a facility near the hospital where Jim has dialysis, and I also make 12 dozen cookies once a month for the AA group that meets at the church on Wednesday evening. Currently we have a granddaughter living with us part time while she attends Golden West College. I

always stressed that with my peers over the years.

Did you enjoy your time at Coe-Brown and did your education prepare you well for the future?

Yes, the four years passed quickly. I graduated from Coe-Brown in 1949—big class of 18! I went on to Fisher Business College (secretarial)

in Boston but only stayed one year—shorthand was not for me! I came back home and went to Hesser Business College in Manchester and took all accounting classes. I’m really a numbers person! Over the years I have taken many computer classes.

“You can learn from the books but you must have the common sense to go with it or it’s worth nothing.”

Do have children and grandchildren? We have two children, three grandchildren and one great

granddaughter. Our son Frank lives in Whittier (about 15 miles from us).

The grandchildren are: Jennifer, 22; Kimberly, 19; and James, 16. Jennifer has a dear little girl, Lorelei, that is 10 months old and we enjoy spoiling her.

Our daughter Evelyn lives in Columbus, Georgia, and she is not married. She is an ordained Presbyterian minister but is currently teaching at a private school in Columbus. This past summer she spent three weeks at Oxford University studying castles.

Ann’s employer, Boeing, matches her gift to the CBNA Annual Fund each year. Be sure to check with your company’s human resources department to see if they offer a matching gift program and contact the CBNA Development Office (603-942-5531, ext. 186, or [email protected]) for our tax exempt ID number. Remember, all gifts to Coe-Brown are tax deductible!

the Administration Committee has a subcommittee that develops, updates and reviews Academy policies. This is a very focused task that is necessary to keep the Academy’s policies in line with the state’s requirements. This subcommittee will bring forth the updates and changes to the Administration Committee for review. Once review and editing has been completed the chair of the Administration Committee will present the policy changes to the trustees at the full board meeting. The trustees will then vote on the policy changes or send them back for additional updating.

Administration CommitteeThe Administration Committee is chaired by the vice

president of the board and is responsible for the overall review of all administrative matters in the Academy. The headmaster has the day-to-day responsibilities of the administrative and educational programs of the Academy. This committee works closely with the headmaster to insure compliance with all federal and state laws and regulations. The committee is responsible to ensure that adequate staffing is provided and that duties and responsibilities for these positions are current. Negotiations with faculty, sending school districts, nominations of board members and officers are also the responsibility of this committee. This committee also works closely with the Fiscal Management Committee relative to salary and benefit issues and to ensure compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Fiscal Management CommitteeThe Fiscal Management Committee has the responsibility to

ensure the proper management of all Academy funds. This includes an overview, in conjunction with the treasurer, of all investment funds from endowments and donations that are not directly related to the operating budget. The committee is also responsible for developing an annual operating budget in conjunction with the headmaster that ensures adequate funding to meet statutory and contractual obligations. There is also a responsibility to monitor expenditures and to report the budget status to the full Board of Trustees for any actions that might be required. The Fiscal Management Committee works with the Administrative Committee to ensure compliance with all federal and state statutes and regulations related to pay and working conditions in conjunction with the administration.

Athletic CommitteeThe Athletic Committee oversees the Academy’s numerous sports

and co-curricular programs. Currently an average of 30% of the student population is involved with sports-related activities each season. The Academy offers a variety of fall, winter and spring sports for boys and girls at the freshman, junior varsity and varsity levels.

In addition to sports, there are 32 club and co-curricular programs. This variety of programs provides our students with additional opportunities and experiences.

The Athletic Committee meets and works with the dean of athletics director to continually review the various aspects of the sports programs. The committee continues to review the addition of other possible sports to the program. A note of interest, Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, has won the NHIAA Sportsmanship of the Year Award for three consecutive years.

Education CommitteeThe Education Committee reviews and develops educational

programs in conjunction with the headmaster. The Education Committee has many other tasks as well. The committee provides the final step in the interview process for the hiring of new faculty members. The committee is also responsible for discipline issues with students. They meet annually with all the department deans to allow for 6 Visions — Fall 2008

Giving Back, become a Trustee By Jim Grant, CBNA Trustee

One evening not so long ago I was at a social event and was doing what we all do at such things: engaging in conversation. I was introduced to the host of the event. I knew she had been a prosecuting attorney and now had her own law firm in this city I was visiting. She was courteous and to the point; in a short time I learned her position on several matters. Then, out of nowhere, the conversation seemed to turn. She expressed her great concern and doubt for the future of our country. I didn’t have to ask why; she quickly presented two examples with supporting opinions that focused primarily on her impression of today’s young people and the education system. She concluded with, “ I just don’t know where this country is going to end up!”

My response was immediate and direct. I told her, “You are wrong. I know firsthand that our future is bright with today’s young people.” Not only did I have her attention at that time, it was about as far as I got before the cross-examination began. After all, having someone tell you in a matter-of-fact manner that they are wrong requires some sort of explanation.

For those of you who are not familiar with Coe-Brown Northwood Academy, it was first incorporated in 1867. The Academy is defined by the Internal Revenue Service as a non-profit educational institution. For many years the Academy operated as a private school, governed by a Board of Trustees. The Academy, through contractual agreements, currently provides high school education for the towns of Northwood and Strafford. In addition, other students from surrounding communities attend the Academy.

In 2006, the New Hampshire State Legislators determined that an educational institution governed by a Board of Trustees would be considered a public academy. At this time there are only two public academies in the state of New Hampshire; the other is Pinkerton Academy.

Coe-Brown Northwood Academy’s Board of Trustees consists of 15 members who are elected to five-year terms. In the event a member steps down from the Board of Trustees during his or her term, a newly elected member will serve the remainder of that term and then go before the board for re-election.

Four of the 15 members hold the following elected positions: president, vice-president, treasurer and secretary. Elections for these positions, which are held by board members, occur once each year. The only member of the board that receives compensation for his services is the treasurer, approximately $1,500 annually. There is no financial compensation to any other board members for their positions, activities or hours worked as a board member.

The bylaws require trustees to meet as a full board with the headmaster on the second Wednesday of the month, 10 months of the year.

The president of the board assigns members of the board to a variety of committees. Their placement as chairperson and committee members is largely based on their skills and interests. The smaller committees meet on a more frequent basis depending on their workload. In addition, each committee can have, and often makes use of, subcommittees.

At the monthly board meetings the committee chairperson reports to the full board information that is committee specific. The committees include: Administration, Athletics, Education, Development, Facilities, Fiscal Management, Long-Range Planning, and Ad Hoc.

It is not uncommon for a board member to serve on three different committees. All of these committees, except for the ad hoc committee, commonly have additional subcommittees. For example,

Page 9: VISIONS - Coe-Brown Northwood Academyan appreciation of lifelong learning and personal responsibility and to support mutual respect for peers, faculty, administration, the community

Visions — Fall 2008 7

review of their programs and potential needs for the future. A unique aspect of the Education Committee is that representatives from each town with contractual agreements attend educational committee meetings.

Development and Alumni Affairs CommitteeThe Development and Alumni Affairs committee works to continually

maintain a relationship with the alumni of the academy. Many alumni have been gracious in giving back to the academy. They feel their academy experience was beneficial to them throughout their lives and now is their time to provide support that directly benefits the students who will soon be the future alumni.

The Development and Alumni Affairs Committee is dedicated to raising funds to advance the mission of the academy. As with any institution there are always additional needs that are outside the financial reach of the tuition. The Development Committee’s dedication to the school mission secures additional resources that directly benefit the students at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy.

Facilities CommitteeThe Facilities Committee is responsible for the overall management

of the Academy’s buildings and grounds. As the academy has grown, so has the need for additional buildings and facilities to support the educational environment of the students. The maintenance, upkeep and necessary upgrades of these facilities is ongoing. The Facilities Committee continuously looks to the future for long-term needs of the Academy, such as possible buildings, sports fields and parking to support those additions. All the while the committee is making sure that our current facilities and grounds are in the best possible condition.

Long-Range Planning CommitteeThe Long Range Planning Committee consists of a chairperson from

each of the standing committees. It is the responsibility of this committee to develop and monitor short- and long-term plans for the Academy. The Long Range Planning committee continually monitors the changing needs of the Academy and strives to maintain a plan for sound development of the Academy.

Ad Hoc CommitteesAd Hoc committees are established and meet upon

the request of the Board of Trustees. The purpose of an Ad Hoc Committee is to collect information and answer questions on unique situations. When the Board of Trustees determines it’s necessary, the president of the board will assign a chairperson to the committee. With the combined input of the board members, president and chairperson, other members of the board are assigned to the committee. The committee members are usually assigned based on their unique skills that are related to the issue at hand. An Ad Hoc Committee generally meets one to two times and is required to have a report and recommendations ready for the following Board of Trustees meeting.

The host then asked, “What committees do you serve on?” Currently, I serve on the Athletic, Facilities, Education and Sub Committee Chairman for Nominations. Serving on these committees has placed me in contact with fellow trustees, faculty, staff and students in ways that few ever would have a chance to.

Of the committees I serve on, the Education Committee has provided the greatest insight to our future. The Academy’s Board of Trustees, headmaster, faculty and staff are committed to setting standards that challenge the students. But most importantly we are right there to help the students reach that challenge.

One of the most personally painful aspects of the Education Committee is when a student has crossed the line and the Academy’s policy requires that they be expelled for the remainder of the school year. Even though the Academy has a policy of zero tolerance, one should know that the Academy

does not abandon its students. The Academy’s guidance department, along with the SAU, work together to provide the continued education of these students. The student needs to stay on track educationally at another educational institution, with our hopes that they return to us at some point. We all make mistakes; high school is a time to learn from these mistakes and become a better person.

Case in point: a student had made a mistake; it cost him the rest of that school year. Upon this student’s return the following year, there was a remarkable change: He became an exceptional student and graduated with high honors. The mistake had been made, a lesson learned, the opportunity was found. The headmaster handed him his path to the future on graduation night.

We have students who become doctors, nurses, engineers, pilots, teachers and so much more. I went on to explain that college is not for everyone and for those students the Academy’s hands-on classes and attention has made them a valuable addition to the work force with countless becoming craftsmen of their trades.

What I’m seeing is an amazing, well-equipped generation; they are so far ahead of anything that I would have envisioned myself when I was their age. Most importantly, they are a positive factor in today’s society and will be for the future.

The conversation ended with, “You seem pretty positive about today’s kids.” My response to my host, “I know firsthand that our future is bright with today’s young people.”

The easiest way to describe being a trustee of Coe-Brown Northwood Academy is that of continual reward, growth and learning. The Academy provides the opportunity to work with like-minded people who understand the importance of education to our future. Being a trustee is a lot of work and it takes even more time, but if you have a life skill and the time, you may want to give back and become a Coe-Brown Northwood Academy Trustee.

These Precious Walls that to Alumni Call In Honor of Coe-Brown Northwood Academy

These precious walls that to Alumni call;Coe’s Academy, those original hallowed halls. The gentle whispers of days gone past,Held firmly within the hearts, of dear Alumni all.

Not just a building, nor just a place of learning,We the devoted Alumni, embrace it as ourbirthright. It is we, the privileged few, who hold Coe-Brown Northwood AcademyWith such a strong emotional bond of devotion deep within our hearts.

For some we followed the footsteps of our family that came before us.We gained pride listening to their stories from the Coe’s of their youth. In keeping the endearing spirit of Coe-Brown deeply embedded in our souls,We grew to cherish our own time here, our pride passing to children of our own.

We shall in all our lifetime, be true to ourselves and our Coe-Brown,For all the memories we gathered within these hallowed halls. The gentle whispers of days gone past, precious memories made to last,Held firmly within the hearts, of dear Alumni all.

Thank you to everyone who purchased tiles in the CBNA Buy-a-Tile program. The campaign was highly successful with 100 tiles purchased. This spring we began installing the tiles and many people who attended the alumni banquet expressed an interest in purchasing a tile. We’ll take orders through June 30, 2009, for anyone who would like to have a place on the Wall of Remembrance in the CBNA Dining Center. This is a great way to honor an alumnus, a favorite teacher or a loved one. Don’t forget those graduating seniors! For more information, contact the CBNA Development Office at 603-942-5531, ext. 186, or [email protected]. You can use the order form below or download a form on the CBNA web site at wwww.coebrownacademy.com. Mail the completed form with payment to CBNA Development, 907 First New Hampshire Turnpike, Northwood, NH 03261.
