ASEAN TOURISM FORUM17 - 24 January 2013

promote the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region as one tourist destination. ATF TRAVEX is the longest-running annual ASEAN leisure travel trade event, showcasing the largest contingent of ASEAN sellers. This annual event involves all the tourism industry sectors of the 10 ASEAN member nations: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Each year the hosting of ATF is rotated among the member countries. Lao PDR will host ATF 2013 and is all geared up to welcome over 1,500 delegates which includes more than 400 international buyers and 100 international media. ATF 2013 marks the 32nd anniversary of this event since its inauguration in Malaysia in 1981.

Wat Ho PhakeoBuilt in 1565 as a royal chapel and repository for the celebrated statue of the Emerald Buddha, which the Laotians had seized from Northern Thailand in 1551. The statue remained in the temple until 1778, when the Thais invaded and recaptured it, taking it to Bangkok. The temple was destroyed in 1828-1829 during the Thai sacking of Vientiane; rebuilt in 1936; and restored again in 1993. (Map: G-5)

Patuxai

Patuxai (literally Victory Gate or Gate of Triumph), formerly the Anousavary or Anousavari Monument, is situated in the centre of Vientiane, and was built between 1962 and 1968. (Map: H-2)

That LuangA symbol of Laos’s nationhood and the country’s most sacred Buddhist monument, That Luang was built in the 16th century under the rule of King Setthathirat. A symbol of the main stupa appears on the country’s national seal. (Map: K-1)

Mekong Promenade & Night MarketLocated in the mekong riverfront right in the heart of Vientiane. Visitors can enjoy a pleasant walk the Promenade and a magnificent view of the sunset at twilight. Here, the local folks partake in many exercise activities. You can also find souvernirs, T-shirts, toys, paintings, coconut drinks and many more at the Night Market. Chao Anouvong Park, which is part of the Promenade and where one can sit and relax. Every year, the boat racing festival is also held here right after the end of Buddhist Lent. (Map: E-4)

That DamKnown as the ‘Black Stupa’, many locals believe this mythological structure was once inhabited by a seven-headed dragon (now dormant) that stood to protect the city from the threat of the Siamese. Another tale that does the rounds says that the gold that once graced the surface was taken when the Siamese army ransacked Vientiane back in 1828. (Map: G-4)

Buddha Park (Xieng Khuan)24km south of Vientiane, Buddha Park is in a field near the Mekong River. The park, as its name would suggest, is littered with religious sculptures and was built in 1958 by the philosopher Bunleua Sulilat who famously combined Buddhist and Hindu philosophy, mythology and iconography.

Getting There & Away 各地へのアクセス方法

By bus バスNorthern Bus Station: about 2km northwest of the centre, serves all points north of Vang Vieng, including China, and has some buses to Vietnam.The Southern Bus Station or Dong Dok Bus Station is 9km out of town and serves everywhere south. Vientiane to Luang Prabangビエンチャンからルアンパバーンまでの行き方

By plane 飛行機Lao Airlines, 2 or 3 times a day, 40 minutes.ラオス航空、２～３便/日　所要時間約40分By bus バスThe Northern Bus Station is the main departure point. Buses bound for Luang Prabang depart regularly throughout the day. The air-con buses are comfortable for the long journey while the VIP buses provide an extra space, a snack and a bottle of water. Normal bus takes 10-12 hours. Any bus bound for Luang Prabang can drop you off in Vang Vieng, though you pay the same ticket price as if you were going all the way. Another option is to book a mini-bus from a travel agency. クム族は1000年以上前からラオスに住んでいる土着の少数民族であり、“Khorm”というモンクメール語族の一般的な名称からきている。約100万人以上いるとされるラオ-タイ語族に次いで2番目に大きな語派であり、6千万人の“クム”族を含む。（2005年統計より）

正真正銘の独自の伝統と文化に加え、独自の言語、宗教、民族衣装、素晴らしい生活様式を何世代も前から先祖より受け継いできた。クムの人々は働き者で正直であり、愛国心の強い伝統を持ち、他の民族とは良好な関係を保っているといわれている。

“クルー祭”は、各家庭・村・郡・県の便宜と状況に合わせ、太陽暦の12月もしくは1月にあたる仏歴の1月か2月に、作物の収穫後に毎年行われている。

2012年12月14日、カム族の儀礼や伝統の保護を目的として、ヴィエンチャン都サイタニー郡パーカオ村にあるルアンパバーン県選挙区の国会議員であり、カム族であるMr Colonel Bounthone SITSOUVONG氏の家で、 “クルー祭”が行われた。

祭りでは新築祝い儀式、バーシー、ゲームなど様々なプログラムがカム族のしきたりに沿って行われ、伝統的な食事のデモンストレーションや、ルアンナムター、ウドムサイ、ルアンパバーン県、ヴィエンチャン都からの土着音楽演奏なども披露された。党や政府の高官・幹部や地元村民などもこの伝統的イベントに招待され参加した。

Vientiane Capital celebrated Khmu “Kreuth” festival

Khmu is Lao indigenous ethnic group born and lived in this territory for more than thousand years, originated from “Khorm”, which is a general name of the linguistic group of “Mon-Khmer” such as: Khmu, PakoTa oyKatuKatang and others. It is the second large linguistic groupafter “Lao-Tai” group comprising of about 1 million people, including 6 hundred thousand of “Khmu” (Statistic 2005).There is one ethnic group having its own delighted fine and authentic tradition and culture, plus its own language, beliefs, genuine tribes dress, and the nice livelihood, which inherited from their ancestor for many generations. The Khmu peoples are laborious and honest, and have the patriotic tradition and always have the good solidaritywith other ethnic groups. “Kreuth festival” is organizedevery year, according to the convenience and condition of each family, village, district and province, in the first and second month of the Buddhist calendar coincided with December and January of international calendar, after harvesting and storing the crops into the grange.On the 14th December 2012, at Mr. Colonel Bounthone SITSOUVONG’s house, member of national parliament for LuangPrabang Province constituency, who is also Khmu ethnic, at Phakhao village, Xaythany District, Vientiane Capital, the “Kreuth festival” was organized, aiming to apply and preserve this Khmu fine rite and tradition.During this festival many ceremonies were conducted such as the new house warming ceremony, the Baci, the games playing, in accordance to Khmu tribe rite, the traditional food demonstration, the amateur indigenous music performance from LuangNamtha, Oudomxay, LuangPrabang provinces and Vientiane capital. The high ranking leaders of the Party and Government and local villagers were invited to enjoy this traditional events, as there are practicing every year.

WIG, The Women’s International Group, has over 250 members from many different countries. The WIG Bazaar is a popular, fun charity event for everyone, from kids to adults of all nationalities visiting or living in Vientiane. In 2011, more than 200 local businesses, embassies and other organizations were represented at the Bazaar and over 8,000 people attended throughout the day. All proceeds from the bazaar go straight to WIG Welfare Health and Education projects to support women and children in Laos.

The Lunar New Year (Chinese: 春节. Vietnamese: Tết or Tết Nguyên Đán), also known as the Spring Festival, is the most important traditional holiday for millions of ethnic Chinese, Vietnamese, and Koreans across Asia and around the world, and feasting, family reunions, and fireworks characterise the celebration.2013 is the Year of the Snake on the Chinese zodiac, and many believe the snake symbolises luck, thus this year should bring prosperity and peace.

Some may think the holiday celebrations are exotic and filled with excitement, but I see the Lunar New Year as an opportunity to take a break from work and reconnect with family, relatives, and friends, much like the Thanksgiving or Christmas. It also presents a great time to forget your troubles and hope for a better upcoming year.

The Lunar New Year falls on the first day of the first month of the lunar calendar, which in 2013 is 10 February. The customs and traditions vary widely, though the Chinese and Vietnamese-Lao celebrate the holiday similarly. Before New Years Day, families thoroughly clean their houses in a tradition that sweeps away bad fortune and makes way for good incoming luck.

旧正月（中国語でチュンジエ、ベトナム語でテトあるいはテトグェンダン）は春節ともいい、何百万人といるアジア中、世界中の中国・ベトナム・韓国系の人々にとって最も重要な伝統的祝日であり、祝宴、家族団欒、花火がこの祝日を彩る。

2013年は十二支でいうと巳年で、蛇は幸運の象徴なので今年は繁栄と平和をもたらすだろうと多くの人が信じている。

旧正月のお祝いはエキゾチックで非常に楽しいものだろうと考える人もいるだろう。しかし実際は旧正月は仕事から離れて一息つき、家族や親せき、友達と過ごす日であり、感謝祭やクリスマスに近い。また、日頃の悩みを忘れる時間を過ごし、新年がよりよい1年になることを願う日でもある。

旧正月は旧暦の1月1日から始まり、2013年は2月10日がその日にあたる。中国系ラオス人とベトナム系ラオス人は同じように祝日を過ごすが、その慣習と伝統はとても幅広い。悪運を掃き出し幸運を招き入れるという伝統の下、元旦に先立ち一家総出で家中を掃除する。

On Lunar New Years Eve, On Lunar New Years Eve, families enjoy a feast. Meals normally include square, steamed sticky rice cakes call khao tom in Lao, 粽子 zong zi in Chinese, and banh chung or banh tet in Vietnamese. In Vientiane, one or two days before Tet, Vietnamese-Lao families prepare banh chung around a warm fire, providing time for family members to get together.

Unique to Vietnam’s Tet holiday is khao tom, a glutinous rice base with main ingredients including mung beans and pork, and usually wrapped in banana leaves alongside sweet delicacies and fruits. Other popular dishes enjoyed before and during the Lunar New Year include pork, duck, chicken, and fish.

Chinese-Lao eat fish, as the word “fish” is pronounced鱼 yú 余 in Chinese, which means “dispensability” or “more than enough”. Fish represents a blessing for a person so he/she will be well-off or have more money, food, and possessions than they need.

旧正月の大晦日には、家族での晩餐を楽しむ。ラオス語でカオトム、中国語で粽子（ゾンヅ）、ベトナム語でバンチュンあるいはバンテトと呼ばれる蒸したもち米でできた四角い形のちまきを食べる。ヴィエンチャンのベトナム系ラオス人の家庭では、正月の数日前に温かい火の周りでバンチュンを用意し、家族が集う時間を設ける。

ベトナムのテト（正月）に特有なのがカオトムという、緑豆と豚肉が入ったちまきで、大体は甘い食べ物や果物と一緒にバナナの葉で包まれる。他に旧正月に好んで食べられるのは、豚肉・アヒル肉・鶏肉・魚などである。

中国系ラオス人はというと魚を食べることが多い。というのも、中国では“魚”の発音と、「充分にある」という意味の“余”の発音が同じだからだ。人々にとって魚は幸福を意味し、裕福になってより多くのお金、食べ物、財産をもてるようにと願う。

People observe several other customs during the Lunar New Year. Chinese and Vietnamese-Lao invite people with good fortune and wealth to visit their homes on the first day of the New Year, but do not welcome unfortunate and unlucky people. They believe that the first visitor must be a lucky and wealthy person, thus he/she will bring luck and wealth to the families all year round. Unless you receive an invitation, or if you are not sure if you qualify, visit these homes on another day.

During the important ritual of ancestral worship, families pay respect to the earth, sky, and their ancestors, which can bring prosperity and good luck. Other practices include holidaymakers wishing New Years greetings to others at temples, and giving lucky money in red envelops to children and the elderly. In Vientiane, Vietnamese-Lao go to temple at midnight on the first day of the New Year, while Chinese-Lao go in the early morning.

As we enter the Year of the Snake, you should take some time to reconcile, forget all bitterness, and make sincere wishes for everyone. Let me also wish all of Visit Laos’ readers a wonderfully creative year and a peacefully productive 2013.

旧正月ではその他にもいくつかの習慣を目にすることができる。中国系及びベトナム系ラオス人は、元旦には幸運と富を持つ客人を家に招くが、不幸・不運な人は歓迎しない。一番最初の客人は幸運で裕福な人であるべきで、その人物が家族に1年中幸運と富を運ぶと信じられている。もしあなたが招待を受けていない、もしくはその資格があるかはっきりしない場合は別の日に改めて訪問するのがよいだろう。

祖先への重要な礼拝儀式では、家族は繁栄と幸運を運んでくれるとされる地球・空・祖先へと敬意を払う。その他のならわしとしては、お寺へ初詣に参拝に出かけたり、子供や老人に赤い封筒にいれたお年玉をあげたりする。ヴィエンチャンのベトナム系ラオス人は元旦の真夜中に寺へ出かけ、中国系ラオス人は早朝に出かける。

今年は巳年なので、あらゆる苦しい事・困難な事を調和させて忘れるために時間を取り、人々のために真摯な祈りを捧げるといい。Visit Laosの全読者にとって2013年が素晴らしくクリエイティブでパーフェクトな年となるよう願っている。

The Legend

According to tales and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical beast. The beast would come on the first day of the New Year to eat livestock, crops, and even villagers, especially children. To protect themselves, the villagers offered food to the beast in front of their doors at the beginning of every year, so that it wouldn’t attack them. It is also believed that the beast was afraid of the colour red. Hence, every time when the New Year was about to come, the villagers would hang red lanterns in front of their house. People also used firecrackers to frighten away the beast.

Many Chinese and Vietnamese-Lao, believe that offering food and burning incense invite the souls of their ancestors to join the family celebration. Some offer a small portion of the food with burning incense to other ghosts, so that they do not disturb their ancestors. Finally, wearing red clothes means happiness and fortune, and lighting firecrackers when entering the New Year welcomes luck and angels into the house.

Lunar New Year Prohibitions • Don’t forget to pay off all your debts and never borrow money from anyone during Lunar New Year. Otherwise, you will have debt over the years.• Never speak any inauspicious words that sound bad in Chinese. For example, “four” in Lao is pronounced “si”, which means death in Chinese.• Refrain from wearing black and white clothes, as they symbolize death. • Do not clean the house during the Lunar New Year, as it will sweep away good fortune. Many Chinese and Vietnamese sweep their garbage into

the corner of the house, but sweeping must begin outside the house and move inside.

The Lion Dance

During the Lunar New Year, lion dancing troupes from Chinese associations visit houses and shops in Vientiane’s Chinese community to perform the traditional custom of “cai ching” (採青), which means “plucking the greens”. In this ritual, the lion’s quest is to pluck auspicious green vegetables like lettuce, which the Chinese call “cái” ‘(菜) that sounds like “cái” (财, which means “fortune”. Auspicious fruit like oranges tied to red envelopes containing money are hung high or just on a table in front of the structure. The lion dances as it approaches the “greens” and red envelope. The lion dance is believed to bring good luck and fortune to businesses, and troupes are rewarded with red envelopes.

旧正月の禁止事項• 債務返済を忘れずに、そして旧正月中は誰かから金銭を借りてはならない。さもなくば1年を通して借金を抱えることになる。• 中国語で響きが悪い不吉な言葉を発してはならない。例えば、“４”はラオス語では“スィー”であるが、中国語では“死”を意味する。• 死を象徴するような白黒の服の着用を控える。• 旧正月中は家を掃除すると家の中の幸運を吐き出してしまうとされるので、掃除はしてはならない。多くの中国人とベトナム人はゴミを家の角に掃き集めるが、掃除は家の外側から始まり、次に中へと移動して行わなければならない。

獅子舞旧正月中は華人協会からの獅子舞の一団がヴィエンチャンの中国人コミュニティの各家や店を周り、“緑を摘み取る”という意味の採青（ツァイチン）と呼ばれる伝統的演武を披露するこの儀式ではライオンはレタスなどの縁起の良い緑の野菜をくわえ採ろうとする。レタスなどの野菜は中国語で“菜（ツァイ）”と発音するが、これが“富”を現す“財（ツァイ）”と同じ発音であることからきている。お金の入った赤い封筒にくくりつけられたオレンジなどの縁起の良い果物が建物の前に置かれたり高く吊り下げられたりする。獅子舞は“緑”や赤い封筒へと歩み寄る。獅子舞はビジネスに幸運をもたらすと信じられ、獅子舞一団には赤い封筒が渡される。

Many countries have established campaigns to reduce the use of cars and dependence on fossil fuels by promoting cycling. But even in a small city like Vientiane, traffic clogs roads everywhere throughout the day, and even worse at rush hours due to an increase in the number of car owners and a lack of public transport. Can this problem be solved, and can cycling help? If you ask people who live in Vientiane why they do not use bicycles like in the past, you may hear answers like, “The weather is too hot. Drivers don’t give way to bikers. It’s not safe. Too far. Too slow. Traffic is crazy,”…the list is endless. Visit Laos Magazine is wondering if promoting cycling in Vientiane will lessen the growing number of carbon-coughing cars. Let’s hear from Vilayphone Chouramany, a bike lover. She has some very simple ideas to encourage you to pedal, either on your commute or just for fun.

“Choosing to cycle in Vientiane is no longer an easy choice. The temperature sometimes soars, pollution is clouding the air, increasing traffic is causing congestion, and drivers seem ever crazier, while the road space remains small, despite efforts to widen them.

This makes the selection to stick with a bicycle a matter of personal philosophy. Like everyone, I think it’s hot and sticky out there. The dust is annoying, the exhaust fumes make riding uncomfortable, and the drivers are dangerous. And also like everyone, I want cooler temperatures, clean air, and spacious roads. The only answer is a bicycle.

To help me continue cycling on Vientiane’s roads, I have several strategies. First, I chose a bicycle that is comfortable to ride, and according to others, the one I have also makes me look good. This is a plus for the fashion conscious, as a bike is a great way to let people see your style.

My second strategy is to plan my travel. I avoid peak traffic times, and if possible, I cycle early in the morning when the air is still fresh and cool. Unfortunately, I’m not an early morning person, so I break up my travel. If my trip is a kilometre long and

the air is hot, I might plan a stop or two at a shop for a drink to cool off and rehydrate. This helps my body avoid absorbing too much heat for too long, and prevents more sweating, so when I reach my destination, I don’t feel tired or look like a damp clothe.

Some might argue that their fast-paced lifestyle requires quick transportation like a car, which is fine. Sometimes you have to get here and there fast during work. However, I would like to remind more people to slow down, if only a bit. The ever increasing rush in today’s life in Vientiane will only increase your stress level, and your chance of getting ill. A calm bicycle ride can help prevent this in so many ways, and help you stay fit.

I prefer riding alone, but I know people who prefer riding with friends. If this is your preference, by all means look for a like-minded friend to join your trips.

In the end, riding a bike is not a trouble free choice, but neither is driving a car. It is what you want to contribute to our society that will determine your form of transport.”

Phoonsab to see what makes this artist tick.

２．芸術や写真の下地はあったのですか？

私は写真撮影講座を受けたことは一度もありませんが、写真撮影は私の情熱です。独学で学びました。本や雑誌、ビデオチュートリアルなどで学び、国内外の写真ワークショップなどに参加したりしました。

３．あなたに最も影響を与えた芸術家、写真家は誰ですか？

スティーブ・マッカリー、ジョー・マクナリー、デビッド・ホビー、ジョーイ・Lです。

４．写真撮影の準備にはどのぐらいの期間を要しますか？全てのステップはあらかじめ計画するのでしょうか？それとも自然発生的なものなのでしょうか？

私は何をするにもいつも計画立てて行いますが、時間に制限があったり、計画通りにいかない場合は、流れにまかせて、ただできあがりとそれがどのように見えるかだけ心に留めておきます。時にはこれが計画通り行うよりも良いものを産み出すこともあります。

５．読者に向けて、“The Rice”フォトグラッフィックプロジェクトについて教えてください。何があなたを魅了したのでしょうか？

このプロジェクトは”米”に関するもので、フランスの写真家Yves Bernardとのコラボレーションによるものです。私たちは5年前のロケット祭りが行われる農繁期の始まり頃

から撮影を開始し、撮りだめてきました。田植えから収穫、そして料理されるまでのストーリーをひとつずつ記録してきました。それらの写真は、裸足で田植えや稲刈りをしていた先祖の代からそれほど変わることのない、ラオス農民たちの生活を表現しています。非常におもしろいプロジェクトで、ヴィエンチャン中の郡だけでなく、北部・南部の県へもいくつか赴き、多くの農民と出会い、農家としての生活がどのように幸せでありかつ難しいことかを知りました。

６．あなたのテクニックと創作プロセスについて何か秘訣を教えてくれませんか？

私は何も特別なテクニックは持っていません。ただ、写真を撮るときに視覚に頼らず、光と角度、タイミングを感じるようにしています。

７．　読者に向けて、素晴らしい写真家になるためのアドバイスをいただけますか？

まず最初の大事なステップとして、被写体を研究することです。あなたが何を撮ろうとするにしても、それについて良く知ることが必要です。他に大事な事は、重要な写真を撮影するのに必要となるレベルに到達するためには練習をたくさん行う事です。そうすることがあなたに創作性を与え、キャプチャリングやアングル、光、背景などの点で多くの経験を得られるでしょう。

８．写真撮影の他に、何をされていますか？

写真撮影の他には、ヴィエンチャンタイムズ紙のために記事を書いたり、グラフィックデザインの仕事をすることもあります。

９．将来に向けてなにかプランはありますか？どのようなプロジェクトをやってみたいですか？

今頭の中で描いているのは、来年の初めから民族衣装を纏ったラオスの少数民族の写真を撮影するプロジェクトを開始してみたいと思っています。ご存知の通り、ラオスは多民族国家であり、現在急速な経済成長を遂げている発展途上国です。近代化のスピードは速く、彼らの生活様式や服装もどんどん変化していくと思うのでおそらくこれが最後のチャンスなのではないかと思っています。

n How did you get interested in photography?I have been inspired by photography since I was young, and started my photography career with the local English newspaper, Vientiane Times, in 2006. I became even more passionate about the new age of photography, as I have met experienced photographers from various corners of the world.n Do you have an artistic/photographic background?I have never taken a photography course, but photography is my passion. I am a self-taught photographer. I’ve learned from books, magazines, and video tutorials, and took part in some photography workshops, both in country and abroad.n How did you get interested in photography?I have been inspired by photography since I was young, and started my photography career with the local English newspaper, Vientiane Times, in 2006. I became even more passionate about the new age of photography, as I have met experienced photographers from various corners of the world.n Do you have an artistic/photographic background?I have never taken a photography course, but photography is my passion. I am a self-taught photographer. I’ve learned from books, magazines, and video tutorials, and took part in some photography workshops, both in country and abroad.n Which artists/photographers inspired your art the most?Steve McCurry, Joe McNally, David Hobby, and Joey L.n How much preparation do you put into taking a photograph? Do you plan every step, or is it always spontaneous?I always plan when I want to do something, but sometimes, when I have very limited time, or I can’t follow my plan, I have to go with the flow and just keep the result in mind and how it is going to look. Sometimes, this is better than the plan was supposed to be.n Please tell our readers about “The Rice” photographic project? What fascinates you about the places you shoot?

This photographic project is about rice and a collaboration between French photographer, Yves Bernard, and myself. We started to shoot and collect photos five months ago, when the beginning of the previous farming season and rocket festival take place. Then we documented a step-by-step story of rice planting until harvesting and cooking. The pictures show the life of Lao farmers has not changed much from the time of their ancestors, who used their bare hands to plant rice to feed themselves. It was quite a fun project, since I travelled through districts around Vientiane as well as some provinces in northern and southern Laos, meeting with many farmers to better understand how life as a farmer is both happy and difficult.n Could you please tell us something about your technique and creating process?I don’t have any special technique. I just try to be invisible when I take photos, while playing with the light, angles and timing. n Could you tell our readers how to reach such excellent results in photography?The first important step is to research your subject, because you have to know a lot about whatever you’re going to shoot. Another major part is to get plenty of practice before you reach the level needed to shoot an important photo. Experience will bring you creativity and give you experience in capturing and playing with angles, light and background.n What do you do in your life besides photography?Apart from photography, my responsibility is writing news for the Vientiane Times newspaper and sometimes doing graphic design jobs.n What future plans do you have? What projects would you like to accomplish?What’s in my head now is to try and start a photography project in the beginning of next year, to capture portraits of every Lao ethnic group wearing their traditional costumes. As we all know, Laos is ethnically diverse, and is a developing country with a rapidly growing economy. This may be my last opportunity, as modernization may soon change the way they live and how they dress.

2月17日の日曜日、サイニャブリ県で行なわれる第7回ラオス象祭りの開幕式の壇上で、この壮大な哺乳類動物への注目を集めるため、60等あまりの象が集結する。サイニャブリ郡はこの祭りを3日間開催し、パレードやパフォーマンスなど象による様々なアクティビティが行なわれ、「エレファントオブザイヤー」に選ばれた象には王冠が授与される。

公式開会式の後、豪華に着飾った象たちのパレードでプログラムは開始する。あるパレードでは、象たちが沐浴のために川へと向かう前に、県高官、象使い、地元民、観光客が象に祈りを捧げるために集まり、象のバーシー儀式を行なう。別のパレードでは地元の様々な少数民族が、何世紀にも遡る象との関係性を象徴する伝統的服装に身を包む。

祭りの参加者は象と象使いのやり取りを見学したり、象に乗ったり、象コンテストを見たり、ステージパフォーマンスで象の素晴らしい芸や技術を見たり、屋外映画館で象についてより詳しく学ぶこともできる。

Lao ElephantFestival

Some 60 pachyderms are taking centre stage at the 7th annual Lao Elephant kicking off on Sunday, 17 February, in Sayabouly Province with the aim of boosting awareness in this magnificent mammal. Sayabouly District is hosting this three-day celebration, ending Tuesday the 19th, which features a range of elephant activities including parades, performances, and the crowning of the “Elephant of the Year”, all set in a carnival background.

After the official opening, the programme begins with one of several processions of ornately decorated elephants. One parade passes spectators to an elephant baci ceremony, where provincial officials, mahouts, locals, and visitors gather to bless and pray for the pachyderms, before these magnificent creatures continue to the river for their ritual baths. In another parade, various local ethnic groups match by in traditional garb that represents their relationship with elephants that dates back centuries.

While the elephants hold top billing, the Lao Elephant Festival also holds a market fair with a variety of stalls overflowing with local treats such as khanom maw kaeng (coconut custard cakes) and khao tom (sticky rice cakes mixed with various ingredients and wrapped in banana leaves). Other stalls offer Sayabouly staples such as spicy salads, creamy curries, and thick stews.

Known as “The Land of the Elephants”, Sayabouly is home to 75% of Laos’ 500-plus domesticated pachyderm population, and between 100-150 wild elephants. ElefantAsia and Sayabouly District’s Elephant Conservation Centre, with accommodation and activities for tourists, are extremely active in maintaining elephant’s good health and welfare.

旧暦3月の満月の日に、ワットプー祭りが年に一度行われる。今年は2月23日となり、お祭りは25日まで開かれる。パレードや、ボートレースなどの伝統的スポーツ競技、コンサート、見本市、音と光のステージショーなどの催し物が行われる予定だ。

Vat Phou Champasack FestivalThe Vat Phou Festival is held annually during the full-moon night of the third lunar month. This year it is falls on February 23 and the celebrations will continue till 25 February. Activities include parades, traditional sports competitions such as boat racing, concerts, market fairs, and light and sound stage shows.

Vat Phou was designated a World Heritage site in 2001. The temple complex is about 8km from Champasack town, south of Pakse (www.asiantrails.travel).

The Vat Phou Festival 2013 will be the largest ever, including a sound and light performance titled “The Legend of Vat Phou”, a romantic period drama about the relationship between two heroes of a bygone era, Thao Bachieng and Nang Malong. The show will depict the establishment of the Kingdom of Champasack and highlight its history from early beginnings to the present day (www.worklivelaos.com).

ラオス南部チャンパサック県のシーパンドンは、その驚くべき美しさと、他の追随を許さない観光スポットやアクティビティで、観光客を魅了し続けている。東南アジア最大の滝から、川イルカウォッチングまで、雄大なメコン川には多くの見所やレジャーがある。旅行者はフランス植民地時代の鉄道跡を見学したり、島の生活を満喫したり、サイクリングやチュービングすることもできる。

シーパンドンとはラオス語で4千の島という意味で、私は昨年の短期間の旅行でその島に魅了され、今度また長期滞在しに戻ってくるだろうと感じた。私は、サラワン県での仕事から戻ってきた後、県都パクセーの郊外のバス停で南方面行きのピックアップトラック（ソンテウ）に乗り込んだ。

新しい観光情報センターのあるナカサーン到着までは約3時間、そこで私は近くで働いている昔の同僚と落ち会った。私たちは小さな船にのり、ドンコン島までの約20分の間、川岸で働いたり魚を獲ったりする人々の様子を楽しんだ。

ドンデット島とドンコン島を繋ぐ古いフランスの鉄道橋の近くにある友人宅に着く前に夕陽は沈み始めた。私たちは漁で生計を立てている家庭でのホームステイを楽しみ、もちろん彼らは夕食時に様々なおいしい付け合わせとともに大きな魚を御馳走してくれた。

翌朝は日の出前に起き、まだ空が闇に包まれている中、地元の漁師の生活を調査する仕事のために南行きのボートに乗った。月明かりの下で、魚網や木や竹で作った仕掛け、特に滝に不安定に仕掛けられたトラップを一つずつチェックした。このようなシンプルな方法で何匹魚がかかっているかを見るのはとても面白かったが、漁師によれば、今年の前半は収穫量は少なめだと言っていた。6月と7月には1日に40~60kgも獲れると言う。

The Four Thousand Islands remarkable beauty and unrivalled attractions and activities in southern Laos’ Champasack Province continue to attract growing numbers of tourists. From Southeast Asia’s biggest waterfall to boating for a peek at rare Irrawaddy dolphins, this stretch of the Mekong offers plenty to see and do. Visitors can inspect the remnants of a French colonial railway, soak up the island lifestyle, and go cycling or tubing.

The Four Thousand Islands, or “Siphandon” in Lao, fascinated me during a short visit early last year,

and knew I would return for a longer stay. My trip to the islands began in the provincial capital, Pakse, after returning from working in Saravan Province, when I got on a southbound pickup taxi (song taew) at the bus station on the town’s outskirts.

It took about three hours to reach Nakasang, with its new Visitor Information Centre, and I met up with my old college friend who works nearby. We took a small boat to Don Khone Island on a 20-minute ride past other islands, and watched people working and fishing along the riverbank.

The sun was about to set before we reached a friend’s house located near the 13-arch, old French railroad bridge that connects Don Det and Don Khone. We enjoyed a homestay with a family who fished for a living, and of course they treated us to a big fish dinner, served as five different dishes with all types of tasty accompaniments.

We rose before dawn the next morning and took a boat south to observe local fisher folk at work, while the sky remained cloaked in darkness. The moonlight pointed the way as we checked on each of the fishnets and larger fish traps made

from bamboo or wood, and precariously fixed across waterfalls. They resembled a series of narrow wooden bridges, built into the current to snare the fish. It was amazing to see how many fish could be caught using such a simple method, but the fishermen said the catch is low during the year’s early months. In June and July they can haul in between 40-60 kg a day!

朝の漁から家へ戻ってから、私たちは半日サイクリングやトレッキングでドンコン島を周り、島の自然の美しさ、フランス植民地時代の建築物、橋、100年前の機関車を始めとした今は使われていない鉄道システム、急流や滝を迂回するよう造られた橋脚などを探検した。

そして、夕陽が沈む前に、より多くの鉄道跡がある島の南端へ向かい、ラオス·カンボジア国境のメコン川に生息する絶滅危惧種での川イルカの姿を一目見れる事を期待して、小さなボートを借りた。ラッキーなことに川イルカは私たちのボートの近くの水面に、その美しい姿を現した。それはとても素晴らしい忘れられない体験であった。

翌日、私たちはコンカム、コンパソイ、リーピーの滝を周り、最後に、これらの滝の源である、激流が岩にぶつかり飛沫をあげるコンパペンの滝を訪れた。

シーパンドンは友人と共に２、３日旅行するのにとても良い場所だ。1月から3月が最もお勧めの季節で、気候も良く宿泊施設も充分にある。水量もそれほど多くないので、午後メコンに沈む太陽を見たり、チュービングをするのに適している。

After returning home with the morning’s catch, we spent a half day cycling and trekking around Don Khone to explore the island’s natural beauty, and French colonial-era buildings, bridges, and defunct railway system starring a 100-year -old locomotive and piers built to bypass the rapids and falls.Before the sun set, we went to the island’s southern tip with more railway relics, and hired a small boat, hoping to catch a glimpse of endangered Irrawaddy dolphins that inhabit the Mekong at the Laos-Cambodia border. Luck was on our side, and the dolphins appeared, with four of these beautiful creatures surfacing to breathe, often near our boat. It was an amazing experience, I’ll never forget.

The following day, we toured around waterfalls including Khone Kham, Khone Pasoy, and the Lee Phee rapids, before our last stop at the mother of them all, Khone Phapheng crashing over endless rocks. The Four Thousand Islands is a great place to chill out with a group of friends and spend a few days. January-March presents the perfect time, when the weather is nice, and accommodation is plentiful. The river is quite low, which is good for tubing and whiling away an afternoon as the sun sets over the Mekong. I can’t think of anything I would rather do.

休暇の記念品や友達へのお土産を見つけるのは旅行の楽しみの一つだ。そしてルアンパバーンを訪れれば、煌びやかで美しいナイトマーケットが地元の人々との出会いやお土産に最適な品々を与えてくれる。その他に旅行者にとって欠かせないのは、少し街から離れた郊外にある織物の村や漉き紙の村などをぶらぶらしたり買い物をしたりする楽しい午後の時間だ。作り手の人と々の出会いは興味深く、多くの観光客は少し特別な買い物をした店やその売り子の写真を撮るのが好きだ。しかし観光客は、これらの可愛らしい手工芸品は本当に地元の材料を使って作った手作りの品なのだろうかと疑問を持ったりしないだろうか？どこか他の場所で作られて、まとめて輸送されてきたのではないだろうか？販売店に訊ねてもあまり意味はないだろう。そこで現在、ルアンパバーンハンディクラフト協会は、消費者が正しい選択を行う手助けとなるようなステップに取り組んでいる。ルアンパバーンの伝統的なデザインや商品は、ラオスで最もカラフルで面白いと感じるもののうちの一つだろう。手作りの紙製品、楽器、陶器、漆器、カゴ、銀製品、織物、木の彫刻などの商品が新しいラベルシステムによって包装されている。同協会は、ルアンパバーンの手作り製品の売り主や生産者に対し、ラベル、バナー、看板を提供し、マーケティングノウハウを

One of the joys of travel is finding just the right souvenir or gifts for friends, and Luang Prabang presents the perfect place to check this off your list, as the province’s traditional designs and products are some of the most colourful and interesting found in Laos. Plenty of tourists visit villages, meet and watch locals produce handicrafts, and then purchase the finished goods. Others shop at the city’s colourful Night Market or at one of the many stores to find the perfect choice, but how do they know if these are the real deal? Enter the Luang Prabang Handicraft Association (LPHA), and its “Handmade in Luang Prabang” labelling programme. The LPHA launched the project at the annual Luang Prabang Handicraft Festival in December 2012, and since then, vendors keep coming back for more labels and reporting good results. The association hopes the programme will be extended to include more products, and that more producers and vendors will take part. Items covered by the new labelling system include handmade paper products, musical instruments, pottery, lacquerware, baskets, silver jewellery, textiles, natural beauty products, and wooden carvings.Ms Boualay Oudomvilay, a consultant to the LPHA, explains that the labels add value to local products as it ensures shoppers that they are buying bona fide local products. The labels also help vendors, who want to guarantee their offerings are authentic.She adds that the brand “Luang Prabang” helps locals become more aware of the value and beauty of their culture, and why it is important to preserve the local traditions, as this makes Luang Prabang – and Laos – so special and one of the world’s must-see destinations.

The LPHA provides vendors and producers with “Handmade in Luang Prabang” labels, banners, and signs to help market products, while also training small enterprises on how to market and sell their goods. Vendors and producers apply for the right to use the labels with the LPHA’s Handicraft Committee, by providing information about their products. If the committee deems their goods to be handmade in Luang Prabang Province, they then purchase the labels for a small fee. Tourists who want to support the local economy, care about where their souvenirs come from, and want something that is truly representative of local craft work can simply look for the signs and labels when they shop for authentic “Handmade in Luang Prabang” products.

British born textile designer, Heather Smith, has been travelling to Laos since 1999. A textile design graduate of Chelsea College of Arts and Central St. Martins, Heather settled in London, and worked with a prestigious textile and furniture design studio. After four years of design and production management, Heather approached Ock Pop Tok with the idea of developing a new brand. She set up a new design studio in Luang Prabang, and has been working on this new collection since late 2011.

パーサーパーは2012年11月に、ラオスの高地に居住するモン族からインスピレーションを受け、彼らの最初のコレクションである“Hmong”を開始した。そのタイトルからわかるように、本当のストーリーはそのデザインと商品にある。モン族のろうけつ染めと刺繍の絶妙な伝統的幾何学模様からインスピレーションを受け、また、黒・白・赤・藍色を大胆に使う事でこれらの古代シンボルに新しい外観を加えている。パターンは全て手染めによるもので、材料は主に地元で調達し、地元の職人がひとつひとつ仕上げていく。そして一番の売りは各商品が非常に独特であることだ。

We all love the rich decorative traditions of Laos, but it is worth remembering that every traditional design was once a new idea. Someone long ago thought “outside of the box”, and tried something

Pop Tok, Luang Prabang’s most respected textile showcase.The long-time leader in both preserving precious tradition and creating fresh new ideas, Ock Pop Tok now brings us something fresh: a merging of traditional and contemporary. Creative leader, British textile designer Heather Smith, who has fallen under the spell of Lao motifs and materials, is using her talents to create a collection of scarves in many sizes, notebooks, bags, handmade paper, and cushion covers, using silk, cotton, paper, and leather.

in November 2012, as it takes inspiration from the Hmong ethnic group, who tend to reside in the highlands of Laos, but as the title suggests, the real story is in the designs and production. The inspiration comes from a deep look into the exquisite traditional geometric patterns of Hmong batik and embroidery, while giving these ancient symbols a new look via the bold use of black, white, red, and indigo blue. The patterns are all hand screen-printed, materials are mainly sourced locally, and local craftspeople work to turn the pieces a reality. And the best part…each product is quite unique.Heather’s sister, Jo Smith, and Veomanee Douangdala founded Ock Pop Tok over 10 years ago, and both women have always been advocates of the creative use of traditional ideas.

The Luang Prabang Film Festival (LPFF) is an annual celebration of filmmaking in Southeast Asia that aims to educate Lao people about film as a means of cultural expression and communication, and to support a nascent local industry and art form. Since 2010, the LPFF has supported and engaged local filmmakers seeking to develop the domestic industry and encouraged Southeast Asia filmmakers to contribute to an exchange between regional film industries.This year’s festival took place from 1-5 December 2012, and brought together filmmakers and celebrities from across the region. Workshops, screenings and many other activities were organized to raise awareness about the project, and build excitement for the grand event. Led by the Chairman of our Board of Directors, Mr. Ananda Everingham.

ルアンパバーン映画祭（LPFF）は、文化表現やコミュニケーション方法の一つとして映画をラオスの人々へ伝えること、そして新たな地場産業と芸術形式をサポートすることを目的とした、東南アジアで年に一度開かれている映画祭だ。LPFFは2010年以来、国内産業の発展を模索して地元映画製作者を支援しており、また東南アジアの映画製作者らが、地元の映画産業の間での交流に貢献することを奨励している。

今年の映画祭は2012年の12月1~5日に行われ、全国各地から映画監督や有名人が集まった。プロジェクトへの関心を集めるためにワークショップ、上映会、その他様々なイベントが催され、グランドイベントを彩った。
