INGLEBURN HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER – DECEMBER 2011 Page 2

Year in review 2011 has been a busy year for supporting students in their academic and welfare needs and responding to challenges that modern life often presents.

It becomes clear that where we can develop positive partnerships with parents, the issues that arise can indeed be solved although sometimes we do have to be persistent and diligent in responding to the more difficult recurring challenges that occur.

One of these challenges is the use of the internet to communicate with others. Websites such as Facebook have an age restriction that students should be older than 13 years old to be a member but we find that some students (often without their parents‘ consent) ignore these rules.

Technology and electronic communication can be used for a lot of good, but too often it is used to be negative and nasty toward others. We have had numerous sessions with students that have detailed appropriate ways to deal with bullying in all forms which broadly counsel to: build a network of positive people around you to encourage self-resilience; not respond to the bully and to report the bullying behaviour to teachers (with any evidence that is available). The sad but undeniable fact is that bullies themselves, who causing harm and stress to others, are always lacking in their own self-worth and try to bully to mask their own failings.

A positive message for improvement is to personally focus on your strengths and develop them while being aware of areas you can develop and do something about improving. This can be academically or socially but my one broad wish for 2012 is for us all to ‗get along‘ with each other better and achieve our personal best.

Wishing you all the very best in this holiday season as we put the successes and challenges of 2011 behind us and look forward to a bigger and brighter new year.

Leadership in Action Our prefects and student leaders have been very busy lately representing our school and learning from others in the community about how to lead and inspire others.

On 4 November our School Captains, Tara Tanovic and William Bryant represented our school at a World Peace Day ceremony held at Cabramatta High School. The Sydney Peace Prize award winner for 2011 was Noam Chomsky who is a noted International writer and human rights campaigner, spoke of the huge task ahead for the next generation to solve international conflict and to meet the challenge of caring for our environment.

On 18 November, four of our Prefects attended the National Young Leaders Day held at Darling Harbour Convention Centre in Sydney. Inspirational speakers such as Jessica Watson, Avril Henry and Delta Goodrem spoke of their leadership journey and the way they work with others to achieve great things.

Tara Tanovic, Tara Thompson, William Bryant and Alyssa Graney

As we now look toward 2012, our prefects are looking to projects to assist students and build on our school spirit. There was a proposal for Prefects to wear orange sashes but it was agreed that encouraging the wearing of our school uniform with pride was a much higher priority. TProjects for 2012 include some charity work, volunteering and fundraising as well as tutoring for younger students, opportunities for students to perform and to generally encourage all students to participate in as many aspects of the school as possible.

HEAD TEACHER ADMINISTRATION

2011 has been a very successful year for attendance. We have seen an increase of communication from parents and caregivers re student absences.

We would like to invite parents/guardians to continue communication in 2012. If you are planning a trip, know your child will be absent for an extended period of time, please seek an exemption form from the school.

Also, if a student is absent please provide relevant documentation to the school. A daily SMS and a weekly or monthly absence letter are also sent home via the student and the mail.

MACARTHUR WORKPLACE LEARNING PROGRAM (MWLP)

Work Placement Honour Roll Students Shine

Three years ago Macarthur Workplace Learning Program (MWLP) and MG My Gateway (combined forces to acknowledge HSC students who perform exceptionally well in their structured workplace learning, also known as work placement. More recently HTN – Hospitality Employment Solutions, joined the partnership to recognise and reward outstanding Hospitality students.

Each year MWLP organises approximately 3,000 students to undertake hands-on learning in an area that is relevant to their HSC studies ie Automotive, Business Services, Construction, Entertainment, Hospitality, Information Technology, Metal & Engineering, Primary Industries, Retail and Tourism.

Feedback gathered from the host businesses in 2011 resulted in 86 students being nominated for the Honour Roll Board located at their respective school or TAFE College. These students also received a Certificate of Achievement and an offer of an interview with MG My Gateway and/or HTN for an apprenticeship or traineeship position. More than 20 Honour Roll students have commenced apprenticeships or traineeships since the concept commenced in 2009.

We have great pleasure in announcing the MWLP Honour Roll Students for Ingleburn High School in 2011:

Matthew Bush – Phoenix Aluminium

Veronica Grasso – Macarthur Centre for Sustainable Living

Jowinna McBeth-Fainuu – Marsdens Law Group

Bilal Quadan – Page One Technologies

Nicholas Targett – Ambry Furniture

Amylee Van Gestel – Angus & Robertson

Congratulations to these students on their remarkable success!

We look forward to congratulating our future candidates in 2012

180 - TURN YOUR LIFE AROUND PROGRAM

Recently five boys, Masen Cupitt, Sebastian Garozzo, James Gough, Conner Hamilton and Jacob Walbank, along with three teachers, Mr Elbahou, Mr Wilson and Mr Koosache converged deep into the Holsworthy barracks for a gruelling overnight expedition.

After a 14 week program where the boys learnt about anger management, decision-making skills, masculinity, mentoring, support networks, team work, navigation, outdoor meal preparation and setting up tents, the boys were finally ready to put their new skills to the test.

After setting up camp at 7.30am, the team were asked to deal with a range of mock situations where team work, lateral thinking and working under pressure were essential tools. By lunch the boys were enjoying themselves as they prepared to cook their own meals on a trangia (camp stove). After lunch the boys were put through a gruelling 12 km march with their 15 kg backpacks on with temperatures reaching 30 degrees. All boys completed the walk despite the blisters and dehydration. The walk was a very rewarding experience which they all completed.

In the evening we sat around in the dark talking about our strengths and weakness on an individual basis. This was an opportunity for the group to bond with both their peers and teachers. At around 10pm we engaged in a game of hide and seek in pitch black conditions. It was a fun activity with the exception of a minor activity when Conner attempted to dive into thick bush but landed heavily. However after a quick assessment and he got the all clear we retired back to our tents for some quiet time. At 2am we were all woken by the thunder of Black Hawk Helicopters going through their night operation training. Mr Koosache panicked as he got flashbacks to his military days.

In the morning we woke up to breakfast and continued with a range of outdoor navigation activities. At one stage we were disorientated deep in the bush, however the expertise of Mr Wilson and Mr Koosache in outdoor navigation skills got us back on the map in time to find the dirt path to our camp site. Our only casualties were Conner and Mr Elbahou getting stung by an inch ant (ouch it hurt!). By 3pm we made our long walk back to the entry gates of the military base.

This Boys Education Program will continue to run in 2012 but will be extended by being offered to girls also. Any students interested should speak to Mr Elbahou.

Robert Elbahou Boys' Education Co-ordinator

FACULTY ROUND-UP

SPELLING BEE

Students of Years 7, 8 and 9 participated in the Spelling Bee contest. There were three preliminary rounds and finally 10 students from Years 7 and 8 qualified for the final round. The winners were Shivneet Kumar from Year 7 and Isabella Munoz from Year 8.Each student was presented with a trophy. The students are looking forward to the next round in 2012.

LUNCH BUNCH

The Lunch Bunch gets together every Monday and Thursday. This is where students play various board games and form new friendships. It is an excellent opportunity for students to engage in some team games and learn new skills. The students have fun together and look forward to every session of Lunch Bunch.

MULTILIT (Making Up for Lost Time in Literacy) is a targeted reading program that helps students enhance their reading and comprehension skills. The students who have participated in this program have greatly benefited from it. They are now confident readers who are able to make a meaningful contribution in class and participate better in their own learning. The parent volunteers have contributed a great deal in the implementation of this program and we thank them for that.

The students who participated in the Lunch Bunch and MULTILIT programs were taken on an excursion to the Event Cinemas at Macarthur Square with all expenses paid for as a reward for their commitment and good behaviour.
