“Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily
sins
against the body and blood of the Lord. One should examine
one’s
self first; only then should one eat of the bread and drink of
the cup.”
First Corinthians 11:27-28
For Paul the church of Corinth was troublesome. Of all the
churches established by Paul, none gave
him more trouble than that of Corinth. The problem was not so
much Paul, but the kind of place
Corinth was. Among the Romans of Paul’s time to call someone a
“Corinthian” was deemed an insult.
Corinth, an isthmus, was an important center of trade gathering
place for people from throughout the
Greco-Roman empire. Aside from its commercial importance,
Corinth was considered “sin city”. But
not only was it well known for its vices, it also was known as a
gathering place for a myriad of
religious cults.
Paul battled against the moral decadence of Corinth and against
the influence of syncretism on
Christian belief. Both the moral indifference and syncretism
threatened the unity of the Church.
Ironically, owing to his pastoral problems, Paul developes in
his Letters to the Corinthians an
important theology of the Eucharist that speaks very much to our
times.
Corinth in some ways symbolizes the secularism of our times.
With secularism comes moral relativism
and syncretism. Over the past several weeks the media has picked
up on the controversy over
Catholic politicians and the reception of the Eucharist. With
the controversy one also sees that the
bishops have different responses as to when, or if, one should
be denied Eucharist because of one’s
view on abortion or euthanasia, etc.
Although there may be disagreement as to Catholic politicians
and the reception of the
Eucharist, there is agreement on the need to properly prepare
one’s self for the reception of the body
and blood of Christ. There is also agreement that the Eucharist
is about comunio – being one in the
Lord. The Eucharist celebrates this comunio and challenges
Catholics to live in comunio.
Archbishop John Vlazny of Portland makes an important point
concerning one receiving Eucharist.
The reception of holy communion is not only about living in
union with God but also a desire to live in
communion with the Church. This means being one with the Church
in belief and practice. It is not a
matter of picking and choosing. At times, for one to be in
comunio with the Church, humility and
obedience are expected on the part of the believing
Catholic.
For Catholics morality is not about political correctness. It is
not about the majority rule. Imagine
for a moment the Beatitudes composed by a committee. Catholic
moral teaching is based on Scripture
and tradition, as well as reason. It is not subject to the
latest poll or Supreme Court decision. It seeks
to develop an ethic based on clear and consistent universal
principles that ought to guide human
behavior and relationships in season and out of season.
As underscored well by Pope John Paul in his encyclical, Gospel
of Life, Catholics ought not to pick
and choose regarding the sanctity of human life. There must be a
consistent and clear approach (the
seamless garment) that upholds the sanctity of all human life -
abortion, capital punishment,
euthanasia, war, poverty, racism, etc. Paul reminds us that the
comunio worthily celebrated at
Eucharist must come from a comunio of belief and practice.

Para San Pablo, la Iglesia de los Corintios era problemática. De
todas las iglesias establecidas por
San Pablo, ninguna le ocasionó más problemas que la de Corinto.
El problema no era tanto San
Pablo, sino el lugar geográfico donde se ubicaba Corinto. Entre
los Romanos del tiempo de San
Pablo, el llamar a alguien “Corintio” era sencillamente un
insulto.
Siendo Corinto un istmo (lengua de tierra o península que une a
dos continentes), era un punto de
reunión para la gente de todo el imperio Greco-Romano. Además de
su importancia comercial,
Corinto era considerada la “ciudad pecado”. Pero no solo era
conocida por sus vicios, también era
conocida como el lugar de reunión de una gran variedad de cultos
religiosos.
San Pablo luchó contra la decadencia moral de Corinto y contra
la influencia del sincretismo en la
creencia Cristiana. Tanto la diferencia moral y el sincretismo
amenaza la unidad de la Iglesia.
Irónicamente, gracias a San Pablo y sus problemas pastorales, el
desarrolla en sus Cartas a los
Corintios una importante teología de la Eucaristía que habla
mucho de nuestros tiempos.
Los Corintios, de alguna manera, simbolizan el secularismo de
nuestros tiempos. Con el secularismo
viene el relativismo y el sincretismo. Durante las últimas
semanas, los medios masivos de
comunicación han enfocado su atención en la controversia sobre
los políticos Católicos y la recepción
de la Eucaristía. Con la controversia también podemos ver que
los obispos tienen diferentes
respuestas respecto a si debiéramos negar la Eucaristía,
dependiendo de nuestra opinión, respecto al
aborto, la eutanasia, etc.
A pesar de los desacuerdos con respecto a los políticos
Católicos y la recepción de la Eucaristía, se
coincide en la necesidad de prepararse apropiadamente para
recibir el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo.
Se coincide también en que la Eucaristía es la comunio –ser uno
solo en el Señor. La Eucaristía
celebra esta comunio y reta a los Católicos a virar en
comunio.
El Arzobispo John Vlazny de Portland, hace una importante
aportación referente a la recepción de la
Eucaristía. Recibir la Santa Comunión, no es solo vivir en unión
con Dios, sino un deseo de vivir en
comunión con la Iglesia. Esto significa, ser uno con la Iglesia,
tanto en la creencia como en la
práctica. No es cuestión de elegir y tomar. A veces, para que
estemos en comunio con la Iglesia,
implica humildad y obediencia por parte de los Católicos
creyentes .
Para los Católicos, la moralidad no tiene nada que ver con lo
correctamente político. No se relaciona
en nada con la mayoría de las reglas. Imagínese un momento a las
Beatitudes agrupadas en un
comité. Las enseñanzas Católicas en cuanto a la moral, se basan
en las Escrituras y en las
tradiciones, igual que en la razón. No dependen de las ultimas
decisiones de la Suprema Corte de
Justicia. Se busca desarrollar una ética basada en los
principios universales claros y consistentes que
permitan regular la conducta humana y su relación en cualquier
tiempo y circunstancia.
Como lo ha subrayado el Papa Juan Pablo en su encíclica,
Evangelio de Vida, los Católicos no
deberían dudar eligiendo la santidad de la vida humana. Debería
de ser un acercamiento consistente
y claro (vestuario sin costura) lo que sostenga a la santidad de
toda la vida humana –aborto, pena
capital, eutanasia, guerra, pobreza, racismo, etc. San Pablo nos
recuerda que la comunio que
celebramos en la Eucaristía debe llegarnos de una comunio en
creencia y práctica.

Church. It is required for parents to attend two preparation
classes before having their child baptized. Please call the
Parish Center to register for classes prior to the birth of
your
child. When choosing godparents, please keep in mind that
godparents are required to be practicing Catholics who have
received the sacraments of Baptism, the Eucharist, and
Confirmation and are at least 16 years of age.
WEDDINGS: Arrangements are to be made six months in advance
with one of the priests.
RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION): Saturdays, 4:00 to 4:45 p.m.
in the Church, or anytime by appointment.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK: Call the Parish Center immediately
