Summer at SandyPines and Lake Mon-terey Golf Course is infull swing! Once again, there are many activi-ties and options forMembers and Guests

to enjoy. Please go to our website calendar, useyour Sandy Pines calendar, pick up a weekendflyer or check our Cable channel 27.1, forSandy Pines Events. We have an abundanceof ways to be informed, so please use them!

Another annual opportunity for all Members isthe upcoming election on August 17. This is theday each membership is provided an opportu-nity to vote for incoming Board Directors andany ballots that appear on the slate that theBoard has requested your consideration for.

The 2019 election will include our votes to fill(3) three Director Seats, and (1) ballot proposal.I want to thank the outgoing Directors for theirfaithful service to the Park and for the wisdomand foresight that each of them brought to the2018/19 Board of Directors.

I also want to thank those who have enteredtheir names to be Candidates. These Membersall desire our vote that would provide them withone of the open Director Seats. Please readtheir profiles, and come to the “Meet the Can-

didate” meeting and/or come to the Face toPhase meetings that they attend to get to knowthem as much as you can. By doing so, you cancast an informed vote on those Candidates thatmost closely reflect your values and positionspertaining to Governance Issues they considereach year.

There will be one bylaw ballot on the Electionthis year developed by our Legal Counsel toclarify our intent pertaining to Trust Member-ships. Not a big change but a necessary one. In 2016-17 a decision was made that member-ships could be put into Trust. Subsequently“Trust Membership” officially became one of theways a membership could be held. This isnoted in the Handbook under “Definition ofTerms” on pages 8 and 9 under Item D.

Since that time, several Members have put theirmemberships in Trust as a way of estate plan-ning. The Ballot on the 2019 election proposalupdates our bylaw relating to the transfer rightssubsequent to the death of a Member.

This bylaw is currently located in the Handbookunder, “Death of a Member” (Article II, Section7 on page 54 of Handbook). The Board is ask-ing the membership to approve the inclusion ofthe words, “trust instrument” that will provideclarity and compliance with the definition men-tioned above.

The first sentence in the bylaw would then readif approved by the membership: Section 7, Death of a Member - Transfer Rights:Subject to the qualifications established inArticle 11, Section 1, the membership of a de-ceased member may be transferred by testa-mentary disposition, trust instrument, orintestate succession.

The North Shore Center FEMA shelter projectis continuing to move forward. At this time thereis a review of the soil capacity load bearingbeing done. The building will be extremelyheavy and may require soil work prior to con-struction. When we receive the reports and op-tions along with the cost associated with eachoption, we will be making a decision based onthe suggestions by our Engineering Team. Wewill continue to have computer generated ren-derings at the Board meetings and Face toPhase meetings, along with copies of the blue-print drafts that have been completed to date,so come take a look at this facility that will be awonderful addition to the amenities here atSandy Pines for the next 75-100 years.

We continue to work toward gaining certifica-tions required for PA 330 compliance. As I writethis article, Keith is just returning from a weekof training that will also provide him certifica-tions in FEMA related skills training, as well asrequired PA 330 training. This project is movingalong at a pace that we are pleased with at thistime as we work toward the goal of state certi-fication request within the next 12 months.

The Golf Cart Registration Program has beenunveiled, and I encourage each of our Mem-bers to take advantage of one of the manymeetings and publications that are available toyou, to learn the details of why we are introduc-ing the program, and how it will be imple-mented. Some of my initial conversations withMembers is that the Golf Cart RegistrationPacket has many thinking that the main reasonfor the program is to control the illegal cartscoming in from the neighborhood. Although this is one of the concerns we are at-tempting to mitigate, there are several others

CAMPFIRESEveryone enjoys sitting around the campfirewith family and friends. A few smores, hotdogsand roasted marshmallows with the kids is acommon campfire vision. A few safety tipsmay keep this vision as a good experienceand not a bad experience with a trip to theemergency room.Starting a fire: Use natural sources to start acampfire. Use small splinters of wood, twigsor newspaper to start the fire. Accelerantssuch as gasoline should never be used tostart a campfire. Use of accelerants can, andhave, caused severe burns. Supervision: Children should never be leftalone while a campfire is burning. Childrenmay lack the true understanding of the dan-gers of fire and need an adult’s direct super-vision. Adult supervision is always required. Conditions and size of campfire: Campfiresneed to be in a fire pit that contains the fire. The amount of fuel (wood) should not projecta flame that would place people, items, treesor property in jeopardy. Large fires can causeembers to become airborne, floating throughthe air to other sources of ignition. Be respon-sible with the size of the campfire. Campfiresare not intended to be large bonfires or brushpile fires. What to Burn: Campfires are for wood, notgarbage. Be respectful to your neighbors. Acampfire smells great with the aroma of burn-ing wood. A trash fire smells of trash, a not sopleasant smell. Use dry fire wood. Wet fire-wood will burn slower, provide more smokeand will not have the pleasant campfirearoma. Know the conditions: Campfires are in-tended to stay in the fire pit. If the weatherpresents windy conditions that may causeembers to travel through the air, wait until con-ditions are right to build a campfire. Use local wood: Insects travel with firewood.Don’t bring wood from far away. Pests travelwith wood and can spread the insects to otherareas of the State. Never leave your fire unattended: If youhave a campfire burning, you must be in at-tendance of it at all times. Plan ahead. Don’tleave a campfire unattended. When you retirefor the night and go to bed, put the campfireout.

PROPANE SAFETYDo not store portable propane tanks in livingspaces.Propane is maintained under pressure in thetank as a liquid with a boiling point of -44 de-grees. Propane can cause frostbite when re-leased. If you see areas of piping with frost ora white fog, turn off and have a qualified tech-nician check your tubing or connections. If yousmell propane, turn off the propane and call atechnician. Do not use cook stoves, grills or non-ventedheaters to heat the inside of your campingunit. Have your vented appliances checkedeach year for proper operation and ventilation.A buildup of carbon monoxide may resultcausing injury or death. Gas alarms and car-bon monoxide detectors can be purchased toprotect you and your family. High levels of carbon monoxide may causeheadaches, dizziness, flu-like symptoms, shortness of breath, nausea or fatigue. If youand family members have these symptoms, call 911 and get out of the camping unit.

Kids, Injuries and Golf Carts:A review of research of the American Acad-emy of Pediatrics indicated that as golf cartsmove from fairways to communities, more se-rious injuries are occurring. Golf carts areviewed by many as slow moving, harmlessforms of transportation. In reality, research in-dicates that children sustain severe headtrauma in golf cart accidents. Physicians the-orize that people assume golf cart accidentsare not serious because of the low speedsthat they travel. Secondly, parents are un-aware of the high percentage of head injuriessustained in golf cart accidents involving chil-dren. As we all know, golf carts do not have thesame safety features as an auto - no doors,no seatbelts, and can be unstable while turn-ing. The study was conducted between 2004 and2014 with 100 patients involved in golf cart ac-

The month of July generally marks the mid-point of our summer. It may seem as thoughwe can’t be there yet, because of the coolspring, and all the rain. Nevertheless, here weare. The high point of the month is the 4th ofJuly. Hope you had an enjoyable celebrationwith family and friends. Even though thereseems to be a lot of controversy in the politicalnews we still can say that we live in the great-est country. We have much to be thankful forin our land. The freedoms we enjoy are un-matched anywhere else in the world.

At the last Board of Directors meeting, held onJune 21, 2019, our financial report showedthat Sandy Pines is probably at its strongestfinancial position in our history. The BalanceSheet shows our cash reserves to be at a highpoint. First of all, this is a result of a highly ef-ficient management team. Plus, we havemajor projects in the future that need to befunded, such as the construction of anotheroutdoor pool, a safe crossing from Phase 3 tophase 6, funds to match the FEMA grant forthe new Northshore Center, and the possibilityof another indoor pool. There may also besuggestion from the membership that are not

yet thought of. Therefore, building a strongcash reserve is good long-range planning.

The Board also welcomed 35 new memberswhich is made up of 38% retirees and 62%still employed in their careers. The Board alsoadopted changes to the rules concerningshed height and placement on the lot. Thephrase “No seawall construction will be per-mitted in Phase Six” was removed from therules governing Seawall Construction. Therewas no historical information found in therecords to substantiate why this was part ofthe rules. Hence the reason for removing thelanguage, in light of the fact seawalls can beinstalled in other phases around the lake.

The Board adopted the Ballot language for themembership election on August 17, 2019. Theballot will contain the candidates running forthree Board positions open this year and atwo-word change to the By-Laws in Article II,Section 7, Death of a Member. The two-wordchange is “trust instrument” which clarifies thetransfer rights following the death of a mem-ber.

We want to express our appreciation to thoserunning for the Board. It’s an important task,so please take the time to read the resumesof those willing to give of their time and tal-ents.

There is a lot of important information in theFootprints, as well as on the website, for yoube well informed. Board members always wel-come your questions and input.

Enjoy this beautiful place.

cidents that were under 18 years of age. Notall injuries were life threatening, but 76% hada broken bone, and skull fractures were moreprevalent than extremity fractures. Twentyseven percent suffered a concussion, and30% suffered intracranial injury or bleedingwithin the skull. Thirty six percent requiredstays in the intensive care unit of the hospital. The study indicated that a high percentage ofkids on golf carts involved in accidents re-sulted in traumatic brain injuries. The averageage of the child injured was 11 years old. Common causes of accidents – the golf cartis hit or hits an object ejecting occupants, thegolf cart tips over because of lower center ofgravity, improper operation and falls upon the

driver or occupant, and the driver makes aquick turn ejecting occupants. Driver distrac-tions of cell phone use, distractions by otheroccupants, exceeding the number of passen-gers the golf cart has been manufactured tocarry, can also contribute to the incident. You don’t have to be in an accident for a childto be severely injured. Numerous incidents in-volve a child falling from a moving golf cartand sustaining an injury.

As we move forward into the summer, pleasebe aware of the potential injuries and protectyour children. Although not required, installa-tion of seatbelts may assist in the preventionof children falling off the golf cart. Having smallchildren next to you, and in your view, mayalso assist. Supervision of youth operating

your golf cart in a manner that meets your ex-pectations is required. Communicate to youngpeople operating your golf cart the responsi-bilities, and your expectations of how the golfcart is to be driven. Be aware that a golf carttraveling ten miles an hour through the parkon paved roads in which a child falls off theback seat, and hits his head on the pavement, can have devastating results and potential lifetime impacts.

Obey the rules and stay safe this summer!

We congratulate our Park and Garden Store,as well as the Rental Department as they settlein to their new spaces in the west wing of theRetail Center! The Open House that was heldon June 1, was a great success even thoughthe 400 hot dogs were gone about 20-30 min-utes before the open house ended! Here we are, over half way thru this campingseason. Time sure has flown by. I am prettymuch settled back into the job. I want to thankeveryone for being patient with me as I gotreacquainted and back into the groove. I wanted to give everyone an update on thenew GPS unit that we purchased. We cannow locate boat stakes and be sure that it isin the same location as when we remarkedthe stakes a few years back, within a coupleinches. This is making things a lot easier forus all.

Please keep in mind that we need to keep oursites clean thru Labor Day, to avoid being

fined. Please keep everything neat and tidy. Here’s another reminder to make sure you arepulling permits before you start your project. After you are done, please make sure that youreturn your permit within the 30 day timeframe. If any of your projects require you topull a township permit, you must remember tocall the township when your job is done andtell them you are ready for your final inspec-tion. This goes for any permit that requires atownship permit. We have been taking downa lot of dead trees this season in the greenareas. If you have any dead trees or brancheson your site, you should be looking at gettingthem taken care of before winter. We all knowwhat storms can do to dead trees. Please feel free to stop in and see me or giveme a call if you have any questions or con-cerns. I will do whatever I can to help you out.Enjoy the rest of the summer.

COMMUNICATION NEWS

MAINTENANCE NEWSBY BEN FIFELSKI

Summer is finally here! We ask that you donot place items around the compactors, putall of your items inside of them. We havehad many instances where members puttheir items outside of the containers with thehope that someone else may be able to useit. We understand recycling…but this is notthe way to do it.

Thousands of dollars are spent each year inman hours used to clean up messes thatdidn’t need to be there. One thing that re-quires a lot of time is the sorting of garbagefrom the leaf piles. Please, put ONLY leavesin the leaf pile, as we compost those formore inexpensive disposal.

It’s a good idea for you to be proactive withnecessary repairs on your site, too. Think

about having a professional service your airconditioning units. All of these units have fil-ters and coils that need to be kept clean, inorder to run more efficiently.

With the wet spring weather, we get a lot ofcalls about your GFI tripping. This is mainlybecause of bad seals and covers on outsideboxes. They get wet, which then causes theGFI to trip. Please take the time to inspectand replace, if needed.

During the summer months, you may noticeyour water smelling like rotten eggs. This isusually caused by the magnesium rod inyour hot water heater. The best way to flushthe water out is to simply open the pop-off

fresh water will then flow into the bottomof your tank and force all of the smellywater out of the top. We are all pedestrians at some point in time.As we walk across parking lots, go for a run, cross the street, walk to the neighbors or tocheck the mail. As with anything, risk is in-volved as we interact with vehicles.

Here are a few safety suggestions to keepyou safe.

Be visible - wear bright clothing during thedaylight hours and light or reflective clothingat dusk, dawn or at night. Use a flashlightwhen walking at night.

Don’t’ assume that the driver of a vehicle seesyou. Make eye contact with vehicles stoppedat intersections. Never assume that a driverwill give you the right of way.

Adults should supervise children when cross-ing streets. Children under the age of 10, inmost cases, have not developed the ability tojudge distances and speed of vehicles, andshould be helped across the street holding thehand of a parent.

Don’t be distracted by electronic devices.Leave your phone in your pocket if out for a

walk. Don’t use headphones.

Walk facing traffic and on the edge of theroadway. Keep a safe distance from traffic.

If under the influence of alcohol or drugs, don’tbe a pedestrian, stay home. A National High-way Safety study in 2016 found that in 48% ofpedestrian accidents, the driver or pedestrianwas under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The same study indicated that 75% of pedes-trian deaths occur at night, 22% in the daylight

hours, 2% at dusk, and 1% at dawn.

If you are a driver, be vigilant in your observa-tions for pedestrians. Be prepared to stop forchildren. Provide adequate room to pass, slow down, and drive the speed limit. Putdown your phones and electronic devices asyou drive. If under the influence of alcohol ordrugs, stay home and keep off the roadways.

LAKE MONTEREY GOLF COURSE NEWSBY GARY PETERS

Here it is July already…while the season hasbeen very wet so far, the course is holding itsown.

We have some new food items this year. Wenow have corn dogs, Philly Steak w/cheeseand a few new breakfast sandwiches. We’vebrought back our chicken sandwiches andburgers, too. We are also carrying Fenn Valleyand St. Julian Wines.

Each year, we get a lot of new golfers on thecourse. We love having new golfers join us, butif you don’t know the basic rules of the game…

please ask and we will be glad to assist you.Every golfer must have their own set of clubs, and only two players per cart. Please play‘ready golf’ which means you should be readyto hit your ball when you get to it. It should nottake more than two hours and 20 minutes toplay nine holes. The golfers behind you proba-bly need to get back to their place becausethey have other plans. We only allow two-somes and foursomes to play. There are toomany members who start playing more than afoursome after a couple of holes…this will notbe allowed.

For the PGA First Tee program for kids, wewould like to have the kids tee up from the fair-way so they can be on the same green in thesame number of shots as their parents. Thiswill make it more fun for the kids and give thema chance to actually beat their parents!

a chair surfing the web on my iPad. I love allthe people and I love the constant traffic androar of the golf carts! I love the adult activitiestoo like Adult Bingo and Adult dances. I hopeas a BOD member, I can encourage moreadult activities like bringing back the “golf cartpoker run” and having more social eventswhere people who are new to the park andthose who have been here awhile can cometogether and meet and form a bond of friend-ship!

What I’ve been hearing, as I have been outand about “knocking on doors” and introduc-ing myself, is a reoccurring theme which is thecost of some of our fees and dues. I realizeand understand there are “cost of living” in-creases and municipalities raise their costs of

doing business, therefore, those costs are passedalong to us. What I hope to accomplish as part ofthe Board of Directors is to make sure any in-creases have a valid reason behind it. I’d like toknow our membership costs are within reasonand are helping maintain a sense of security, that“rustic feel” some campers like, and moderniza-tion for years to come.
