Ascending to New HeightsThrough the months of July and August, several families participated in the Ascending to New Heights rock climbing program with North Fork Rancheria Family Wellness. Participants attend-ed an orientation where they learned about the history of rock climbing, the different types and styles of climbing, and how rock climbing is a very beneficial activity for physical, emotional and psychological well-being. After the orientation, the participants practiced their climbing skills while the teens and adults also learned how to belay, a rope technique for catching a climber should he or she fall. After several practice sessions at the Family Wellness rock wall, participants travelled to MetalMark Climbing Gym in Fresno to test their new skills on much taller and more challenging climbing walls. All adults and teens were able to pass their belays tests, which the gym requires of climbing partners if they are to climb without staff supervision. An introduction to rock climbing wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the local crags for an outdoor climbing experience. In August, participants travelled to the Willow Creek Wall up Beasore Road with Southern Yosemite Mountain Guides to learn more about climbing and belaying at spots in our own backyard. The guides set up multiple climbing routes and provided instruction on belaying and climbing techniques needed specifically for the routes we were climbing. Everyone had a great time challenging themselves on the different climbing routes and enjoyed sharing the experience with their family.
