On 21 December 1908, 82-year-old Marion Gilchrist was found murdered in her flat in West Princes Street, Glasgow. Her maid, 21-year-old Helen Lambie had left the flat for 10 minutes to run an errand for Marion Gilchrist. Fearful of danger, Gilchrist had made arrangements with the Adams family living in the flat below hers. They established a protocol of three hard knocks on the floor of the Gilchrist flat, which was, of course, the ceiling of the Adams’ flat. That night, Adams and his two sisters heard three sharp knocks coming from their ceiling.
Arthur Adams dashed out of his flat to Gilchrist’s flat and was surprised to find the front door ajar. A short while later, Helen Lambie returned. They soon discovered the body of Marion Gilchrist, brutally murdered, and her brooch missing.
Oscar Slater, a German of Jewish descent, had arrived in Glasgow only a few months before the murder. He had come to find a new life in Scotland. He found a flat about nine minutes walk from the Gilchrist flat. His mistress, Antoine, arrived a few days later. A month before Marion Gilchrist died, Slater bought a set of tools to fix his new flat. The set included a small hammer that the prosecution was to claim later as the murder weapon.
How was Oscar Slater implicated in the Gilchrist murder? On the day Gilchrist was killed, Slater received two letters from his friends. One from London warned Slater that his estranged wife was on his trail and seeking money from him. The second, from San Francisco, inviting Slater to join in a business there. Slater then raised money by pawning a brooch, and he had also asked for the immediate return of a watch that he had sent for repair.
On 26 December he and Antoine checked into a hotel in Liverpool under the false names of Mr and Mrs Otto Sando. From there they boarded the Lusitania and sailed for New York.
Slater and Antoine were detained by the New York police. While in detention, Slater wrote to his friend Cameron, telling him that he is being framed for a murder. In that letter, Slater reminded Cameron that he (Cameron) knew why he was going to America. Slater also wrote that he had five witnesses who could testify as to where he was on the night of the murder. Cameron showed that letter to the police.
Slater was tried for the murder of Marion Gilchrist. The prosecution evidence included several witnesses who claimed that they saw Slater on the night of the murder. On the evidence, Oscar Slater was convicted and sentenced to death, but that sentence was subsequently commuted to life imprisonment in the Peterhead Prison. He was there for 18 years before he found the opportunity to smuggle a letter out through a fellow prisoner who was being released, having served his term. The letter was addressed to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle – creator of Sherlock Holmes. Slater had vowed to kill himself if he were to remain in Peterhead when he is there on the twentieth year of his imprisonment. Was Slater exonerated?
