Guildford Cathedral – also referred to as, The People’s Cathedral – welcomes people of all ages to a place of worship, inspiration and engagement. With a truly remarkable story, The People’s Cathedral was completed through the generosity of thousands of ‘brick-givers’. Being the only English cathedral dedicated to the Holy Spirit, emblems of doves and flames are visible throughout the building; on the handmade kneelers, the pillars, on the wonderful round windows and the etched glass.

The Cathedral is not only a place for daily worship, but also an attraction with unique architecture, being a precious part of our national heritage. The Grade II building was conceived and built in the twentieth century with simple aesthetic design and decoration. The fusion of space, light and principles from Gothic tradition paired with the twentieth century construction techniques reflects the idea of Sir Edward Maufe, architect of the building, to produce a design of the time yet in the line of the great English Cathedral, to build anew on tradition. Dapdune Wharf, Wharf Road, Guildford GU1 4RR l Map 2 Ref 7C

01483 561389 l [email protected] l www.nationaltrust.org.uk/riverwey

Set in four acres of grounds in the heart of Guildford, Dapdune Wharf is the historic home of the Wey barges that worked the waterways from Guildford to the Port of London from 1653 onwards. Who knew that Guildford’s commercial waterway pre-dated the northern canals by 100 years?

Here in the heart of Surrey, you can find out about how the Wey Navigation made Guildford the county town of Surrey, as well as relaxing on a boat trip, climbing aboard a restored barge, or learning how to tie a sailor’s knot. The visitor centre at Dapdune Wharf brings to life the stories of this historical waterway. You and your family can have fun at one of our many events, let the children explore or raid our dressing up box.

The River Wey Navigations meander through 20 miles of Surrey countryside, from Godalming to Weybridge, with towpath all the way, so you can walk it in chunks, looking out for resident wildlife. Walk past Sutton Place near Jacob’s Well, where the architect of the Navigation, Sir Richard Weston, lived in 1653. Discover the gory details

of his Tudor ancestors who dared to engage with Henry VIII.

From the towpath you can see the ghostly shape of the ruined Newark Abbey, abandoned during the dissolution of the monasteries. Try and guess the location of Newark Mill, a beautiful wooden five-storied mill, which burnt to the ground in an hour in December 1966. At Thames Lock in Weybridge, you can see the pound lock, which replaced an earlier flash lock, enabling boats to move from the navigation into the Thames. Open April to October: Thursdays – Monday.

Guildford’s open-air pool – the Lido, is open during the summer season from April to September. Set in 4½ acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, the heated Olympic sized pool is a great place to chill out, meet friends, picnic and of course, do some serious swimming!

Guildford Lido boasts three exciting slides as well as the paddling pool with interactive toys and a mini-slide for younger swimmers.

Customers this season will be able to ride the MULTISLIDE which has two lanes side-by-side so two people can race themselves to see who’s the fastest and if you’re brave enough take on the KAMAKAZIE – one slide, straight down BOOM!

For a more gentle experience meander down the ANACONDA but look out for those tricky corners that will make you go faster!

The Lido is one of Guildford’s greatest treasures. Tucked away next to Guildford College and 1 minute from the A3, it is one of the country’s few remaining original 1930’s pools. The Lido attracts an average of 60,000 people every season and is home for a variety of community galas, competitions and other community clubs and societies.

The Lido is also a great venue for private hire with corporate BBQ’s our speciality. Please visit our website or call us for detailed opening times and prices.

The Yvonne Arnaud Theatre opened its doors in 1965 and built an impressive reputation as a producer of significant work, much of which transferred to the West End and toured nationally.

Under our new Director, Joanna Read, we are now re-establishing the theatre as a maker of great productions for Guildford, and beyond.

Our Main Stage offers a varied programme of theatre including drama, comedy, pre and post West End shows and classics, plus opera, ballet and children’s theatre. We are proud to produce Guildford’s annual Christmas family pantomime.

The smaller stage in the Mill Studio offers fantastic theatre and cabaret from emerging artists and an annual art exhibition. It is also the base for our thriving Youth Theatre. A mix of drama activities for young people is offered all year around including drama classes, workshops, educational projects and a summer show.

The Riverbank Café is open daily (excluding

Sundays) from 10am for a relaxed coffee, lunch or afternoon tea and cake. Our Riverview Restaurant is a perfect place to enjoy a meal just moments from your seats for the show. The menus change seasonally, but you can always be assured of freshly prepared dishes, prepared by our own chefs, from locally sourced ingredients.

Our sunny terrace is ideal for post shopping-spree refreshments, and pre-show, you can enjoy a delicious supper in the café, or a drink and nibbles in our Stalls and Circle Bars.

Beat the interval queues by ordering your interval drinks at the bar, or even the cloakroom, when you arrive at the theatre.

We also have a range of attractive rooms and spaces available for hire, suitable for anything from business meetings to birthday parties and beyond.

What could be more fun than celebrating in our fantastic building? Please visit yvonne-arnaud.co.uk to find out more.

Polesden Lacey, the former home of socialite Margaret Greville and just 11 miles from Guildford, is the perfect place to explore.

Spend some time in the house discovering the collection of fine art and objet d’art; linger in the glittering gold Saloon which was designed to impress Maharajas and discover Dutch, Italian and British paintings along the corridors.

The garden’s setting at Polesden Lacey is spectacular; perched on a chalk ridge and taking in views southwards towards the wooded slopes of Ranmore Common and the valley below.

The gardens offer something in every season, bursting to life in spring, with snowdrops, daffodils and bluebells the first to bloom. Throughout the summer, the walled Rose Garden and Double Herbaceous Borders are full of colour and fragrance.

The less formal pleasure grounds are perfect for a gentle stroll and boast panoramic viewpoints across the estate.

Children will love the tree swings and natural play area – or enjoy rolling down the South Lawn. Why not find a shady spot for a picnic and a delicious ice cream? Or visit the bug hotel, beehives and chickens in Home Farm Orchard.

The Polesden Lacey estate sits in the centre of stunning countryside. In almost every direction there are breath-taking views, including the London skyline to the north and the rolling hills of the North Downs to the south. It is as rich in historical features as it is in wildlife and biodiversity.

Our café and coffee shop serve delicious hot and cold food, cream teas and sandwiches.

Wisley is the flagship garden of the Royal Horticulture Society charity and one of the UK’s most visited and best-loved gardens, attracting around one million visitors, to its 240 acre site, each year.

There is so much to see at Wisley including: The Rock Garden, one of the oldest and most magnificent examples of Alpine planting; the Wisteria Walk created in 2017 showcasing 2 varieties intertwined for a stunning display; Battleston Hill with a display of rhododendrons in full colour during the spring and lovely shady paths in the summer; summer is the best time to visit the Bowes-Lyon Rose Garden for its colour and scent; not forgetting the Arts and Crafts

designed training hub and Laboratory built in 1907 that stands proudly above the beautiful Jellicoe Canal, which houses the second largest collection of water lily cultivars in the UK.

At 12m high, and covering an area equal in size to 10 tennis courts, the Glasshouse has three main areas of planting-moist temperate, dry temperate and tropical with a stunning waterfall as a central feature.

This nature park at Shalford was created by the Wey & Arun Canal Trust who are restoring the canal as a public amenity and ‘green corridor’ through Surrey and West Sussex, as part of a route from the River Thames to sea. Volunteers have enhanced the park’s environment to attract wildlife ranging from buzzards to butterflies. Scrub has been cleared and new trees planted. The park straddles the Cranleigh Waters stream and is alongside the long-distance Wey-South Path, next to the route of the disused Guildford to Horsham railway line.

The Canal Trust has built a wheelchair-accessible riverside path and a viewing platform (with cycle racks and picnic tables) which provide views of meadowland and magnificent veteran oak trees. Nearby on the Wey-South Path, walkers and cyclists can explore structures including a unique bridge and a historic aqueduct. Further on, the first section of canal in Surrey to be restored can be found, alongside Dunsfold Park. Here, the new Compasses Bridge was opened in October 2016 by Dame Penelope Keith on the 200th anniversary of the canal’s official opening.

Guildford is lucky enough to have the North Downs Way, a designated National Trail passing through the protected landscapes of the Surrey Hills, just a stone’s throw from the town centre.

With short circular routes for an afternoon stroll or challenging hikes for those more seasoned walkers, it makes for the perfect day out.

Start your ramble off in Farnham, stopping off at Hogs Back Brewery for a tasty tipple with native grown hops or if you wish for a more artistic endeavour Watts Gallery is also on the route.

As you pass through Guildford, a series of three highlights await; at Chantry Woods catch the south facing views and see the bluebells in full bloom if the time is right. Next, St Martha’s Church, the iconic and historic building on the hill with far-reaching views to the South Downs. Topping off the trio is Newlands Corner, with the chance for refreshment as you breathe in the panorama. Following this is a stretch of woodland, dip down into Albury to visit the local organic vineyard or the picturesque village of Shere before you climb back up for a glorious stretch of ridge-walking through to Dorking. It’s not called an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty without just cause!

Keep your eyes peeled for:

l Pill Boxes – Military pieces of history dotted along the length of the route.

l The rich wealth of flora and fauna – rare plants and butterflies as well as British livestock from friendly Belter Galloway cattle to the hardy Herdwick Sheep.

l The River Tillingbourne – with a history of water-milling, this beautiful river winds its way across your path at various points leading into the River Wey.

l The Greensand Way and Pilgrims Way also interlock with your path.

l The Downs Link is a great way for locals to connect between the North and South downs.
