Heber Valley is home to three large reservoirs and dozens of smaller lakes. Boating, paddleboarding, canoeing, wind surfing, and even swimming are some of the most popular activities in Heber Valley’s reservoirs during the summer months. Water sports are a great way to cool off, get some exercise, or enjoy the mild temperatures in this beautiful mountain valley. Two smaller reservoirs offer opportunities for boating or canoeing and are very popular with fishermen.

While boating is among the most common watersports in Heber Valley, other sports like paddleboarding, canoeing, and kayaking are quite popular. On most days you can catch a glimpse of a kite surfer or wind surfer on Deer Creek Reservoir.

Find everything you need for an adventure out on the water with one of our local outfitters.

WATERSPORTSFISHINGMeandering through the middle of the Heber Valley, and famous for its blue-ribbon fly fishing, you’ll find the Provo River. Anglers frequent its waters year-round, following the regular insect hatches that feed the resident trout. Walking trails follow the water and easy access parking lots are found along the river. Not sure where to start? We highly recommend hiring a guide to show you the best local spots.

Deep water fishing is found on the surrounding reservoirs (Strawberry Reservoir, Deer Creek Reservoir, Jordanelle Reservoir). For dedicated anglers, fishing doesn’t end when the lakes freeze over. The reservoirs

that surround Heber Valley develop a thick sheet of ice during winter and offer some fantastic ice fishing opportunities.

ICE CASTLESIce Castles is an awe-inspiring, must-see winter phenomenon that brings fairytales to life. The frozen attraction is in six cities across North America. The experience is built entirely by hand using hundreds of thousands of icicles hand-placed by professional ice artists. The castles include breathtaking LED-lit sculptures, frozen thrones, ice-carved tunnels, slides, and fountains.

Each ice castle is approximately one acre in size and built by hand, taking thousands of hours to create. The daily process consists of growing 5,000 to 12,000 icicles that are harvested by hand and individually sculpted into existing ice formations. Newly placed icicles are then drenched with water. The blend of icicle placement, temperatures, water volume and wind result in an astonishing and ever-changing variety of ice formations.

BOWLING ALLEYHoliday Lanes has been open since 1962 and run by the same family since 1964. Step back in time and enjoy this family-friendly bowling center featuring original ball returns and pin machines. Be sure to grab lunch or dinner while you knock back a few pins with friends. We highly recommend the deep-fried pickles with a malt shake.

THEATERSHeber Valley has two movie theaters, The Avon Theatre and the Ideal Theatre. These theaters are not just a venue for movies — they’re actually historic sites. The theaters opened shortly before 1918 and have played movies off and on since then. They have recently been renovated on the inside, feature surround sound and each theater plays a different movie with weekly rotations.

PICKLEBALL COURTSPickleball is a paddleball sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Players use solid

paddles made of wood or composite materials to hit a perforated polymer ball over a net.

Heber Valley boasts both indoor and outdoor pickleball courts that are open to the public. These options provide a great experience for both beginners and seasoned pickleball enthusiasts.

History tells a tale of a Uintah tribe of Indians that lived by a beautiful silver lake. The lake was abundant in fish which the tribe would catch, dry and store. Eventually, the tribe accumulated a large surplus of fish.

Far to the North, there lived another tribe of Indians called the Nez Perce. One year there was no rain and many of the Nez Perce died from famine. To save his people, Timpanac, the leader’s son, went to pray to The Great Spirit and was told to go south where he’d find a tribe to sell him food.

After many days, Timpanac came to the Uintahs’ lake. The leader treated Timpanac kindly and was willing to exchange dried fish for rich furs. In the leader’s teepee, Timpanac saw Ucanogos, a beautiful Indian maiden. When Timpanac returned home, he gave Ucanogos a beaded headband. In return, she gave him a pair of gloves.

When Ucanogos was old enough to marry she asked her father to hold a contest for all braves who wished

to marry her. Ucanogos sent a runner to tell Timpanac to come.

In order to marry Ucanogos, the assembled braves were required to climb to the top of a mountain where Ucanogos waited. The first to reach her could claim her as his bride.

When Timpanac reached the steepest place on the mountain, the other braves were waiting for him. They pushed Timpanac over a ledge where he fell to his death. Ucanogos saw what happened, wept great tears and vowed they would never stop falling. A wall of tears still falls down this canyon — now named Bridal Veil Falls.

She then threw herself off the mountain, praying to The Great Spirit to take her soul and join it with Timpanac’s. The Great Spirit was so saddened by these events he joined their hearts together as one to hang forever in Timpanogos Cave, and he set the Indian Maiden on the mountain top for eternity. Those who travel through Provo Canyon can clearly see her features. The name Timpanogos combines the names of the ill-fated lovers: Timpanac and Ucanogos.

In the spring of 1859 pioneer settlers made their way to what they called the Provo River Valley. What they found was a beautiful valley surrounded by towering mountains with a wide river cutting across the valley floor. Early English settlers named their new township London after their hometown in Britain. Later it would be renamed Heber City after a prominent and well-loved leader in the LDS church and became an official city in 1889. Traditionally a farming community with over 100 dairy farms and a culture steeped in the “Western way of life” Heber City has made its own place in history from the birthplace of surround sound to hosting one of the country’s premier Western festivals. From humble beginnings with just 18 families, today Heber City and the surrounding Wasatch County area have become an oasis for outdoor and adventure enthusiast. With just over 15,000 residents Heber City still features small town charm from bygone eras and that feeling of being welcomed home.

Tucked against the mountainside on the western edge of the Heber Valley, is the small mountain town of Midway. Visitors to Midway often enjoy the Swiss-inspired architecture and wonder how the town got its name. In the late 1850’s pioneer settlers with Swiss roots began to till and work the land bringing with them their unique style. By 1866 two small settlements existed. For safety concerns the two settlements decided to combine. Meeting in the middle they formed their new community as the town of Midway. Recently voted as Utah’s favorite small town, Midway welcomes visitors from around the world to enjoy Swiss charm, soothing hot springs, mountain golf, awe-inspiring manmade castles of ice in the winter and much, much more. During the 2002 Winter Olympics Midway welcomed the world as they helped host the Nordic events at Soldier Hollow. Today, Midway is a town of just over 5,000 residents and features some of the best dining and outdoor experiences in all of Utah.
