2nd EURECA (Engineering Undergraduate Research and Catalysis) Conference

02-03Jul

The Taylor’s University School of Engineering is the only Engineering School in Malaysia to use project-based learning for its students. Based on the CDIOTM Framework (Conceive, Design, Implement and Operate) that is spearheaded by the famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology, engineering students in Taylor’s University are given the golden opportunity to think the unthinkable, reach the unreachable and make the impossible possible through this framework. This basic yet effective concept has brought to life countless incredible projects envisioned in the young students’ minds.

RoboRace Challenge 2014

The RoboRace is a sophisticated robotic challenge in which teams of Foundation in Engineering (FIE) students will compete to build a robot that can complete an obstacle course track in the fastest time. The robot will be maneuver using iPads. Teams of students will have to work together to build a fully functioning robot in 15 weeks.

Taylor’s University School of Engineering (SOE) hosted the 2nd Annual Eureca Conference at its Lakeside Campus to provide a unique platform to its graduating students to experience and address a variety of new world challenges, not only for a possible career in research but also to provide precursor for them to use the developed research and project management skills in their future endeavor.

A total of 48 research papers were presented over four parallel oral sessions. Supported by 14 alumni members of the school, the conference also was attended by two keynote speakers, two invited speakers and ten external judges from tertiary institutions and industry partners. The Board of Engineers Malaysia also granted seven (7) CPD hours to all the participants of the conference. Five awards were presented to the authors of the most outstanding research papers in their respective category by the organising committee.

Engineering Fair

Awards and Winners for July 2014 Engineering Fair

The Taylor’s Engineering Fair is an event held every semester to showcase the innovative concepts, ground-breaking inventions and revolutionary ideas of its students, whose projects are being evaluated and awarded in respective categories. There were 142 projects on display at the fair from the three disciplines – Chemical; Electrical and Electronic; as well as Mechanical Engineering.

From race cars to robots playing ping pong, Human Powered Vehicles to Quadcopters, Dehazer machine and Thermoforming machine to Raincatcher systems, these are just a tip of the iceberg of an array of impressive projects Showcased at the July 2014 Taylor’s Engineering Fair.

Contact Based Automatic Power Cut-Off Iron BoxMost of the time we fail to switch off the electrical iron after use, which leads to accidents and wastage of power. In this project, the power supply to the iron box is cut when it is not in use and thereby preventing accidents with hot surface. The push buttons will be fixed in the handle of iron box, which will have two states ON and OFF. Whenever there is a physical contact from the human hands with the handle of the iron box, the push buttons will be in ON state and there will be input flow of current to the heating element of iron box. When there is no physical contact with the handle push button, it will be in OFF state hence the power supply to the heating element will automatically off.

Tripert Singh Khalsa is a second year electrical & electronic engineering student and also the lead drummer of the Sri Dasmesh Pipe Band. The Sri Dasmesh Band is also known as The Malaysian Sikh Band and received international recognition with requests for performances by various communities. The Band has travelled to London, United States, Australia and even Berlin to perform a repertoire of Scottish and local Asian tunes. Members of the Sri Dasmesh Pipe Band have been receiving regular tutoring from Pipe Major Barry Gray who hails from Sydney, Australia. In April, Barry Gray handpicked seven members of the Sri Dasmesh Pipe Band, including Tripert Singh, to play with his band, The Hawkesbury Napean Valley Pipe Band, as guest players in the Australian Nationals. The group made history by competing and winning the Grade 4 Australian National Championships. In October Tripert was chosen to lead the drum section and the group was placed 2nd in the Grade 3 and Grade 2 championships. Tripert received the third placing in two categories in the Grade 2 solo snare drumming competition.
