  • Important message for the Parents of 5th Grade Students: This is a reminder that Arizona law requires that all incoming 6th grade students have proof of the following vaccinations by the first day of school for the 2014-2015 School Year: 1. Tdap 1 dose is required when 5 years has passed since the last Tetanus shot and the student is at least 11 years old. 2. Meningococcal 1 dose is required for all incoming 6th graders, 11 years and older. A reminder of immunization needs for fifth graders will be sent out with your childs final report card in late May. If you have any questions about the vaccination requirements please contact the Ventana Vista Health Office @ 209-8004. If your child receives these immunizations before the end of the current school year, please bring in the documentation to the health office at Ventana Vista so that we may update our records. If your child receives these immunizations over the summer, they may be turned in to Esperero Canyon Middle School front office, faxed to 209-8170 or emailed to [email protected]. Many thanks, Vivien Petersen, RN Deborah Moyer ECMS and Canyon View School Nurse Ventana Vista Health Assistant 209-8104 209-8004

Super Volunteer Recognition The governing board recognized Amanda Davidson as a super volunteer. Board President Carole Siegler reviewed the volunteer efforts of Ms. Davidson at Esperero Canyon Middle School. Ms. Davidsons support of the 6-8 grade students as a tutor, coach of the Science Olympiad Team, and dance teacher exemplify that part of the CFSD mission about a caring, collaborative learning community.

Student Recognition The governing board recognized Jillian Smith, Esperero 6th grader. Board Member Amy Krauss reviewed Jillians outstanding achievement as the first place winner in both the CFSD and Pima County Spelling Bees. She exemplifies that portion of the CFSD mission that each student achieves intellectual and personal excellence. Consideration of smartschoolsplus, inc. Phased Retirement Program (first reading) Assistant Superintendent Denise Bartlett presented a proposal for a Phased Retirement Program in CFSD. As a retention strategy, the district has been working with smartschoolsplus inc. to design a program

whereby retirees can continue working at CFSD as a contracted employee through a third party vendor. The retiree can draw retirement benefits (with no negative impact to the AZ State Retirement System) and the equivalent of a full CFSD salary. It is the intention of the district that employees will work with smartschoolsplus for only one year and will then be rehired by the district into the same position. Consideration of Proposed Revisions to Policy GCQE Retirement of Professional/Support Staff Members (first reading) Dr. Bartlett presented proposed revisions that match the provisions of a smartschoolsplus phased retirement plan. Retirees could continue to work as a CFSD employee on a part-time basis (less than .5 FTE) or become a contracted employee for greater than .5 FTE. Unused short-term leave would follow the contracted employee when working for a third party vendor. Consideration of Proposed Revisions to CTE/JTED High School Courses (first reading) Associate Superintendent Mary Jo Conery presented revisions to courses in two high school CTE/JTED programs for implementation in the 2015-2016 school year: Media Productions courses of Fundamentals of Media Production (Film & TV) and Advanced Media Production (Film & TV) 1 & 2; and the Entrepreneurship courses of Entrepreneurship: Business and Marketing 1, and Entrepreneurship: Business and Marketing 2. These courses are currently offered at the high school. The revisions to the courses were driven by CTE/JTED program standards changes by the Arizona Department of Education. Consideration of New Middle School World Language Course (first reading) Ms. Sheryl Castro, Director of Global Citizenship Education, presented a proposed new middle school world language course. The Global Solutions Pathways is a middle school sequence of three courses designed to continue the development of Spanish language proficiency. The courses will be available to students in grades 6-8 who have prior Spanish immersion experience (at Ventana Vista) or who have a heritage learner background. With Global Solutions students will
