Welcome to the Spring/Summer Season at VISUAL

VISUAL is situated in Carlow’s town centre, on the grounds of Carlow College complex. A pedestrian entrance is located on College Street, beside Carlow Cathedral.

By car: Leave the Motorway at Junction 4. VISUAL is located on the Old Dublin Road in the centre of town. Town Council pay parking (including Disabled parking and coach parking) is available onsite, and free after 6.30pm.

By public transport: Carlow is an hour from Dublin by train, with frequent daily services. VISUAL is a 5 minute walk from Carlow Train Station. Bus Eireann and JJ Kavanagh Coaches operate frequent services daily. VISUAL is a 10 minute walk from Carlow Bus Park.

VISUAL relies on the passion and commitment of our wonderful volunteers in the delivery of our programme and we are very grateful for their support in the gallery and the theatre spaces. Thank you for all your help!

To mark the centenary of the Easter Rising, this season VISUAL is looking at cultural identities and belonging, with a stunning exhibition programme, an international conference in partnership with Trinity College Dublin and Carlow College, projects with community partners including Carlow Women’s Network, Carlow Integration Forum, Carlow Education Centre and Carlow County Development, and an improvised musical response to the season from The Gloaming’s Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and Iarla Ó Lionaird—a timely opportunity to reflect widely on who we are now, as a culture and a society.

Yinka Shonibare MBE—Recreating the PastoralRecreating the Pastoral draws the viewer through a series of installations which combine elements of elaborate 18th and 19th Century European dress and courtly behaviour with contemporary political sensitivites. The installations question Euro-centric histories, and are a powerful expression of the complexities involved in questions of authenticity, belonging and identity. The subject matter and theatrical staging of the works draw references to the colonial relationship to landscape, and the control and creation of spaces for pleasure by a powerful elite.

In Spring 2016, in partnership with the Irish Writer’s Centre, Forum members will work with poet Mark Granier to tell their stories of travel and arrival.

Tadhg O’Sullivan–The Great Wall An experimental and poetic documentary film looking at the enclosure of Europe by a system of walls and fences. O’Sullivan uses fragments of Kafka’s short story to overlay his images, offering a piercing critique of the structures of power and exclusion at work inside and outside Europe and encountering those whose lives are defined by these walls—detainees in European migrant camps. Shot in 11 countries over a year, the film journeys from the Spanish enclave of Melilla in North Africa where the border with the EU is marked by a three-metre high barbed fence, to London and Brussels where the shimmering office buildings reflect a deeper ideological fortification.

Post Colony (2014) explores the microcosm of natural, industrial and colonial histories through a specific project in Killarney National Park, Co.Kerry, focusing on the invasive species Rhododendron x superponticum. First introduced to Ireland in the 1700’s as an ornamental landscape feature, this plant has become deeply problematic, threatening native woodland species. Ironically the invasive plant has also become an iconic touristic image in the park, with its prolific purple blooms. Kennedy presents a speculative history of the park landscape from the Plantation of Munster in the late 16th Century to the park’s current status as a tourist destination and special area of conservation, which can be read as a microcosm of Irish history.

Representation is crucial to our identity and our place in society—it informs our being in the world and how we participate in community. This work is developed in collaboration with Spirasi, a humanitarian, intercultural, non-governmental organisation that works with asylum seekers, refugees and other disadvantaged migrant groups, under-represented on a legislative, political or cultural level here in Ireland. Through dialogue, reflection and exchange, participants have collaborated to create work which reveals both differing and shared realities, and draws attention to questions of how these realities might be represented.

Conflict, Migration and Identity in Modern Ireland: Global and transnational perspectives A timely opportunity to examine and to reflect on the relationships between conflict, migration and identity in modern Irish history and culture. Masterclasses on the histories, sociology and literatures of migration, conflict and identity will also be offered by Dr. William O’Reilly (University of Cambridge and Fellow at Harvard University), Dr. Liam Harte (University of Manchester), Dr. Mary Gilmartin (Maynooth University). The programme will also include artists talks, film screenings and a musical performance by Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and Iarla Ó Lionáírd exploring the themes of the season’s exhibitions in VISUAL. County Carlow Youth TheatreCounty Carlow Youth Theatre are in the house! CCYT are delighted to be finally putting down roots and making VISUAL our official home. This year is an exciting one and we have a number of great projects up our sleeves; performing arts camps, guest tutors and a super special, top secret summer project!

From Mon 18th January, the YT will be running weekly workshops on Monday nights from 5.30pm for young people aged 9 to 19. We are open for registration and new members are always welcome. The Man in the Woman’s Shoes Set in October 1978—Pope John Paul the First is not long dead, Autumn is closing in and Pat Farnon has ‘some business’ to do in town…following his day’s journey, this beautifully observed piece written and performed by Mikel Murfi, is funny, tender and at times downright daft. Patsy Cline— Music and MemoriesThe 50th Anniversary Tour

Join us on a trip down memory lane to listen to the music of the great Patsy Cline. The classic songs such as ‘Crazy’ and ‘Sweet Dreams’ are timeless. Played by the wonderful Sandy Kelly in her 25th anniversary of the first Patsy Cline show that Sandy produced and starred in, the only Country Music Show to have featured in London’s West End. Special guest on the show is Gerry Guthrie, one of most talented and relatively new ‘Country’ stars on the Irish scene. With a brilliant live band, this is a show not to be missed.

A TG4 documentary of Carlow native Micheál Ó hAnracháin, Irish rebel and second in command of Dublin’s 2nd battalion under Commandant Thomas MacDonagh, who fought at Jacobs’ biscuit factory during the Easter Rising, holding out until May. hAnracháin was executed by firing squad on 4 May 1916 at Kilmainham Jail for his role in the Rising.

To Trouble the Living Stream The Carlow Writers’ Co-Operative Recall Easter 1916

From 1912 to 1922 Ireland passed through a decade of great change, from campaigns for social reforms, to political events. At the centre of this maelstrom was the Easter Rising of 1916. In an evening of poetry and story, music and song, the Carlow Writers’ Co-operative will explore the legacies of this event, and what they might mean to Ireland today in a tolerant, inclusive and respectful way.

The Quiet Man (1952) is director John Ford’s epic romantic comedy— a loving, sentimental, nostalgic tribute to his Irish ancestry and homeland. A rich, beautifully-textured Technicolor presentation deserving of its Color Cinematography award, it was filmed mostly on location in Ireland and stars John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara and Barry Fitzgerald.

Kolumbus joins us at VISUAL, Carlow following the launch of his debut EP ‘Give Them Life’ in Whelan’s Dublin on the 25th of February. Kolumbus is the solo journey of Wicklow-based song writer Mark Caplice. With over 10 years of live gig experience across Ireland and Europe, you can expect nothing short of an exceptional night of music. 2016 is set to be a very busy year for Mark with Ireland, England, Germany and the U.S.A all on the tour roster.

Ó Raghallaigh, who plays fiddle, 5-string viola and hardanger fiddle, and singer Ó Lionaird, have developed international reputations rooted both in their mastery of traditional and sean-nós Irish music and pushing boundaries in seeking its’ contemporary expression. A fascinating retelling of The Plough and the Stars by Sean O’Casey, through the eyes of its youngest character, Mollser. Zaza Urushadze’s humanistic and moving story of how innocent farmer Ivo gets caught up in the 1992 Georgian-Abkhazian conflict. After a shootout between Georgian soldiers and Checen mercenaries, Ivo finds himself nursing two wounded men from opposite sides in his small house. As both men get better and Ivo remains stoically neutral, refusing to allow bloodshed under his own roof, the stage is set for a brilliant examination of conflict and humanity.
