Mortar

Mortar joint #1The Joint is troweled with ¾” width. The mortar is used on an apartment building. It is most likely medium strength type N mortar.

Mortar joint #2This joint is tooled with a ¾” width. The mortar is used on an apartment building. The finer grain suggests a higher strength typeS mortar.

Oriented Strand BoardThis structural panel is a nonveneered product is made different from other plywood. The grains are not all the same direction and do not follow order like plywood.Wood strands are put together so there are no voids and compressed, then filled with a membrane that makes them as strong as plywood but cheaper and more uniform.

PlywoodVeneer- a thin covering of another surface.

Plywood is engineered wood made from wood veneers. Veneers are laid at 90 degrees as they are stacked on top of each other to make the finished sheet. The arrow indicated the direction of the grain.

This ¼” finish plywood is a good example of the A side is used.

Rebar

Deformations in rebar are helpful for the concrete to grab hold to so they become more structurally stable.

Stack of #5 rebar. 5/8”

Steep Roofing DrainageGutter- made from bent aluminum. The gutter collects rain water before it falls off the roof and directs it to the ground.

Downspout- made from aluminum. The downspout collects water from the gutter carries it to the ground to be expelled.

Splashblock- keeps high velocity water falling in downspout from eroding ground while directing it toward the drainage area. -This example is make of brick.

Vapor RetarderThe vapor retarder is in place to keep water vapor from penetrating insulation. It does absorb some water keeping it off the gypsum ceiling. The bottom top would be the hot side during the winter.

Waterproofing

Loosely laid waterproofing between slab and wall. The grade rises from low on the right to high on the left where this waterproofing is needed as the foundation and grade meet.

Weep Hole

This weep hole is used to help get rid of water vapor that has seeped through the mortar and brick. If it had no where to escape it would continue seeping into the building.
