  • INTRODUCTION

    THE PETERLOO MASSACREOn 16th August 1819, 60,000 people gathered on whatwas then known as St Peter’s Field in Manchester topeacefully demand the reform of parliamentaryrepresentation.

    When troops, including local government forces, chargedthe crowds, the tragic result saw 18 people lose their livesand around 700 injured. This was to become known asthe Peterloo Massacre.

    In 2019, Manchester Histories will mark the bicentenaryof the Peterloo Massacre with a programme of publicevents, learning and creative exploration in partnershipwith key cultural organisations and communities acrossGreater Manchester.

    WEBSITE & SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS

    A dedicated website will be created for the project launchingin March 2019. To ensure its legacy and impact goesbeyond the lifetime of this project, the URL iswww.Peterloo1819.co.uk

    The site will place the user in St Peter’s Field and thesetting of the protest so that they can experience thestories and accounts of those present on the day. Atimeline will help to illuminate what took place in theimmediate build up to, and aftermath of, 16th August 1819.

    The website will be a resource for all partners, organisationsand groups planning activities around the bicentenary toupload details of their events.

    Manchester Histories in partnership with key cultural organisations will deliver Peterloo 2019,a Heritage Lottery Fund supported project that will bring together people, organisations andpartners to explore through events, learning and artistic exploration how the Peterloo Massacreof 1819 came to define Manchester as a radical city like no other and to mark the turning pointof democracy in Britain. An interactive website will lead the story-telling experience and, fromJune to August 2019, a vast public events programme will unfold led by the themes of protest,democracy and freedom of speech.

    A watershed moment in British history and an event that in its time was reported uponworldwide, and yet, awareness levels of the Peterloo Massacre are relatively low. ManchesterHistories, a growing and dynamic charity that works collaboratively to reveal, share and celebrateGreater Manchester’s diverse and often hidden histories and heritage, will use the bicentenaryto shine a light on this chapter of history and its contemporary relevance.

    ABOUT THE IDENTITY

    The logo consists of three elements: the St Peter’s Fieldshape, the title ‘PETERLOO’ and the strapline ‘PROTEST.DEMOCRACY. FREEDOM.’

    The overall form of the logo is taken from the shape ofthe geographic area of St Peter’s Field in Manchester,site of the Peterloo Massacre of 1819.

    The strapline is an expression of the core Peterloo values:Protest, Democracy and Freedom of Speech.

    GENERAL USAGE

    THE STANDARD LOGOThis is the main logo and can be used within Peterloocommunication material in print and online.

    GENERAL USAGE

    REGULAR, REVERSED & SIZEThe logo is designed to be strong and legible in bothpositive or negative (reversed-out) appearance.The logo is flexible and can be reproduced at any sizerequired. Size and positioning of the logo is dependenton your specific application requirements.

    AT REDUCED SIZESA special version is available specifically for usewhen the logo is to appear at very small sizes, whichwould cause the strapline to become unreadable,either on screen or in print. The reduced size versionis identical to the standard logo except for theremoval of the strapline.

    COLOUR

    PREFERRED COLOURIf colour reproduction is available and appropriate touse, then the prefered colour for the logo is Green(Pantone 3295). This colour has been chosen torepresent the hope, optimism and peaceful natureof protestors present at the demonstration, as wellas the green of St Peter's Field.

    The St Peter’s Field shape can be used as a framing device ordesign element within layouts. The shape can be enlargedand/or rotated - but not distorted or reflected. Examples ofthis application are shown on the following pages.

    The Peterloo Field shape is supplied as an Adobe Illustratorfile along with the main logo files.
