    Heart disease has been the leading cause ofdeath in Korth Carol ina since 1930. In fact -thesix lea:iing causes of death haYereuinedessentiallyunchanged since 19'9. This coincides with the ~strecent changes in cause of death classification.

    The aajor classifications of bi dh and deAthdata in this report are: geographic area, colorand sex. Certain data are classified by theinstitutiOn of OCOlrrence and attendant. Birthsare grCMiped by age of IIOther, total-birth order,and birth weight. Fetal deaths are classified byaae of tIOther and attendElnt. Deaths (ell(;\tidingfetal deaths) are clasSified t-y age group. sell andthe "undl,}rlying cause of death".

    Marriages aftddivorces are classified by county.Rd IIOnth cf occurrence. Narriages are furthergrouPEd by age of bride and gnxa, previous _ritalStatu5 and nlilber of previoos !lIllHiages. Divorcesare claSsified b¥ grountis and nUllber ofdlildren.

    The 100 counties of Rorth Carol ina are the.ajor geographic subdivisions tabulated in thisreport. s-e'lSau a.re givtltl for cities with apoCMJlation of 10.000 or IIOI'e in the 1960'census.Table ' ..5 gives data for eadl .coUnty tty urban andrural areas. Urban is defined as insid~ thecorporate I i.its of any incorporated place with apopulatio.--:;·of 2,500 or MOre in the 1960 census. andrural includes too balance cf the county.

    Events are assigled to an area on the basis oftwc criteria. residence andaccurr8nce. Residenceis defined as the place where a pprson· lives orMaintains his legal residence. and evenb arezssigned to that place regardless of where theyoccurred. Residence of the !QOther is used forassi",inlbirths and infant deaths. For deaths inhospitals and other institutions. the usualresidence prior to adIIissim to the instibltiQ'l isused. OCCUrrence is defined as the place where theevent OCCurred regardless of the residence .of theperson. Birthsariddeaths are giVen by both residenceand occurrence. fetai, infant and aatemal deathsare shown by residence only.
