GLOBAL FACTORY-DIRECT M A R K E T P L A C E
The ingredientsonline.com factory-direct e-commerce platform will save billions of
dollars in broker and distributor fees. Our Amazon.com-like platform provides radical
transparency on quality control documents, real-time U.S. inventory in Calif., N.J. and
Fla., tiered factory-direct pricing and clearly identified factory of origin.
With FSMA implementation, knowing the original source of all ingredients is mandatory,
and ingredientsonline.com is the solution. For each ingredient page, you can always see the
original factory source at your fingertips, 24/7. This feature provides you with the necessary
details to be FSMA/FSVP compliant.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, One of my goals for 2018 is to bring the factory-direct model and level of factory
transparency to an even higher level. Sure, every ingredient listing has the factory of
origin clearly displayed, however, we want to take that one step further and invite you
to Meet Your Factory.
ingredientsonline.com is producing several Global Sourcing Events this year and
each will feature one Premium Factory partner who will present information on
their ingredients and services. In addition, several of our factory partners will be at
each event where you can learn more about them. Be sure to check out the cities and
schedule on page 28 for an upcoming event near you starting with Phoenix in January
and Miami in February.
On a recent trip to China, India and Europe while I was looking for new factory
partners, I continued to see the Chinese government shutting down factories for
environmental control. This has created price increases and tight supply of many
ingredients. For instance, prices for Vitamin C increased more than three times from
fall 2016 to fall 2017. One way we are helping with this particular situation is we have
partnered with BBFY, a global supplier of several ingredients, and they’re launching a
new Vitamin C factory in Q1, 2018 (see more about the capacity on page 11). For now,
we have Vitamin C in stock in several of our U.S. regional warehouses and are ready for
immediate delivery. Be sure to also read the Market Trends article on page 19 by Tony
Xue, General Manager in our Shanghai office. His team has an inside track on these
details including ingredient pricing trends.
2018 is off to a great start and we are very thankful for your continued support.
I hope this is your best year ever!

INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVE
HOW TRUST SELLSBy Scott Steinford
T rust effects every relationship we have and influences even slight encounters. The importance of trust is rarely argued, but unfortunately, trust is not routinely a top of mind conscious part of decision-making processes. Trust is an interactive exercise involving at least two parties (i.e., producer/buyer) who each demonstrate degrees of risk and responsibility. Trust is only as valuable as it is visible which is why we need to achieve trust transparency in our organizations and consumer relations.
Trust transparency in the ingredient manufacturing and supply industry is paramount because of the nature of both action and expectation. Organizations that buy food ingredients are not selling widgets that people externally utilize and discard – these companies manufacture and sell a product that people ingest with the expectation of an improved quality of life. The risk/responsibility ratio is incredibly high to both the manufacturer and the consumer. As a result, more attention to the issues driving trust is imperative.
Ingredient buyers want to trust ingredient manufacturers or providers to relate with their needs, wants, concerns, fears, etc. They want to know how these concerns are being met and want education beyond what is found on the label or box. Buyers want to know the promises provided by the product or service meets or exceeds expectations and is valuable. Purchasing decision models reported by various survey organizations summarily cite three primary decision process drivers: Trust Transparency defines this process as RED:
• Relate – Buyers want their needs understood and the problem/risk solutions easily communicated
• Educate – Buyers want facts and education to support the solutions provided by the product or service
• Deliver – Buyers expect and evaluate the product performance as well as the experience of the purchase
HOW TO RELATE ...............................................Trust begins with communication and connection. Learning what buyers want is a never-ending process that requires consistent communication. The communication process between a supplier, to be optimal to both sides, should be a two-way flow of both need and resolution. If a conversation centers solely on price, the sustainability
of the relationship is highly questionable. The consistent and loyal buyer/supplier relationship must establish a content of communication that continues to supply opportunity and needs at many levels. In 1910, American Psychologist John Dewey proposed a purchase decision framework that fits today’s ingredient supply chain:
1. Problem/Need Recognition A formulation is created or an ingredient is presented
2. Information Search Ingredient is sourced from suppliers or presented to formulators, dosage determined, claims/benefits substantiated, etc.
3. Evaluation of Alternatives Suppliers are compared or market channels are evaluated
4. Purchase Decision Supplier or customer is determined
5. Post-Purchase Behavior Customer/supplier interaction is evaluated for mutual benefit and continued relationship
While the process John Dewey outlined over a century ago has applicability, the reality is many suppliers and buyers fail to interject the necessity and awareness of each phase of the process. To
INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVE
positively recognize the importance and subsequently reinforce the process supports a stronger relationship between the supplier and buyer. It is important to note that both sides of the relationship can benefit from adopting this process. The more knowledge gleaned from the communication offered through the implementation of this process makes each side more valuable to the other.
HOW TO EDUCATE ...........The establishment of trust to gain customers is well founded in almost all purchase decisions regardless of the product. The reinforcement of that trust through facts and education in the buyer/ingredient supplier relationship lends itself to greater brand loyalty. A key aspect of the education continuum supporting dietary supplement supply chain is transparency.
Ingredient manufacturers today have an unprecedented ability to interact and educate with buyers in a manner never offered. ingredientsonline.com is an excellent example of the advancement of ingredient manufacturer information using technology. The ingredient manufacturer can provide significant information to support the product: Transparency of supply chain.
In addition to the commitment to ingredient
supplier manufacturer transparency, another key responsibility of the ingredient manufacturer is the responsibility of further education by contributing to the science supporting the ingredients produced. Strict commoditization of ingredients does not lend itself to a sustainable model to promote an ingredient. Surveys and analysis continues to point to the fact the consumer increasingly views not just
the claims on the label but the ingredients as well. A 2015 Hartman Group survey of 1,728 adults age 18 to 69 indicated 81 percent of those surveyed who say they are watching their weight read the nutritional panel on product labels. Even when the consumer study asked participants if labels were important when they were not watching their weight, 72 percent said they read the nutrition panels. With the ability to research an ingredient or set of ingredients
"Trust is only as valuable as it is visible which is why we need to achieve trust transparency in our organizations and consumer relations."

online, one only needs to visit a local health food store to see consumers routinely conducting on the spot research.
A 2017 consumerlab.com survey of over 9,500 respondents listed the most popular dietary supplements as Vitamin D, Fish Oil, CoQ10 and Probiotics. The consumerlab.com report also lists Melatonin and Curcumin as leading supplement categories. In a search of PubMed articles referencing human studies, it is clear the more popular supplements have the most cumulative references:
Ingredient Pub Med Human References
Vitamin D 51,597
Fish Oil 15,592
Melatonin 9,577
Probiotics 9,483
Curcumin 4,927
CoQ10 2,158
These numbers indicate research contributes to the success of an ingredient. In all cases, 2016 research declined from 2015 and branded ingredient searches provided almost no references. The concern is the current decline in research can have long-term consequences to the ingredients and industry. It is likely the branded ingredients are directly or indirectly supporting the studies that exist, but they are not individually getting credit. Ingredient manufacturers should collectively support human studies to continue to provide increased awareness and education. Together, ingredient manufacturers can share the cost of these human clinical studies just as the impact of results are shared in the marketplace after positive outcomes.
HOW TO DELIVER .............Trust is ultimately valued and achieved through communication both before and after the ingredient sale. Actions including product quality, timely delivery
and customer service largely affect the overall satisfaction of the ingredient sale. All aspects of the supply chain impact the ultimate success of the retail product. Any retailer will tell you a significant success factor for a retail product is the quality of the ingredients which make the product. An ingredient manufacturer in the dietary supplement space can maintain the highest degree of customer service, consumer education and product quality, but the impact of a competitor that provides inferior quality or adulterated product can impact the entire ingredient category. A notable example of this issue can be found in the ingredient L-Tryptophan. Tryptophan supplements were banned completely by the FDA in 1990. Only one company, using one production process, was found to have the toxin “contaminant 97.” Self-policing in the dietary supplement industry is of more importance than most other industries. The dietary supplement industry is often characterized as being unregulated. While it is not unregulated, per se, the regulations that do exist are inadequately enforced.

INDUSTRY PERSPECTIVE
Fortunately, the overwhelming majority of the dietary supplement industry maintains a level of ethics and quality which maintains a high degree of overall consumer confidence. Tragedies such as the L-Tryptophan crisis of 1989 can scar an entire industry. Even though only one manufacturer was proven to be culpable in that crisis, all the ingredient was removed from the United States by the FDA for 15 years. The Peanut Company of America crisis which resulted in several deaths from unethical production of peanut butter, while not in the dietary supplement industry, affected the dietary supplement industry by creating increased legislation in the form of the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010. The Natural Algae Astaxanthin Association (NAXA) found adulterated retail products that could not have been discovered with typical and standard test processes. NAXA could explain to the manufacturers of the effected product the concerns and issues and the concerns were corrected. The Ephedra Education Council was formed because of a crisis already
mature, underfunded and too late to benefit from any self-police correction. The Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED) was formed to instill a level of quality, ethics and education to that category after concerns within the category emerged. Most participants in the industry agree the GOED purpose as initially outlined was achieved and the ingredient has fared better than it would have without the organization.
The ingredient manufacturer/buyer relationship is an increasingly important element of the supply chain equation. The distance between the two entities has continued to shrink and the impact of the relationship continues to grow. The B2B e-commerce platform provided by ingredientsonline.com serves to continue the evolution of transparency in the ingredient supply chain. This transparency, as well as other important factors as outlined here, builds the trust necessary to gain the confidence in the supply chain that will serve all involved for years to come.

FIT-FOR-PURPOSE
Fit-for-purpose methods discussion is not a new topic. Discussion has often focused on proper
test platform and method selection specific to herbal ingredients and finished products. However,
the fit-for-purpose topic also applies to areas outside of botanical identification category. Several
categories, such as fiber, fat, protein and vitamin analysis methods fit in this discussion category.
Determining the proper method for fiber analysis is a great example. The method options and
subsequent prices vary greatly whether the desired results are for total dietary fiber, total fiber
(CODEX definition), total fiber with resistant oligosaccharides and so on. Understanding the
proper differences and available methods in advance can save a lot of valuable time, money and
potential investigations down the road.
Contract laboratories have the opportunity of working with companies
that supply and manufacture products. Such companies may drastically
differ in size, expertise, products and testing needs. Interactions between
the contract lab and supplies and/or manufacturer include anything
from answering routine test inquiries to providing complex, custom
tailored test solutions to clients with unique ingredients and product
formulations. These interactions are critical to the success of the lab and supplier and/or
manufacturer. This article identifies five areas where additional discussion, training and
improvements are needed to facilitate further progress.

CONTRACT LABORATORY
PERSPECTIVE on CHALLENGES in the Dietary Supplement Industry
APPROPRIATE METHOD TESTING
Understanding the differences in the
active compounds present in products
and requesting the appropriate analysis
methods with the required selectivity
and sensitivity is an area that is in need
of improvement. One example of this is
analysis of certain vitamins that have more
than one form. Vitamin B12 has various
forms, and therefore, the method needs
specific requirements. Along with Vitamin
B12, the other typical suspects that fall in
this category are various forms of Vitamin
E, Vitamin A, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B6
and others. Most of the current methods
have the selectivity to provide results
for a specified form in these categories.
Therefore, requesting the accurate analysis
specific to the active compound form
present in the product is critical for the
timely and accurate completion of the
analysis.
ENCAPSULATION
Companies need to better understand
their ingredients, especially those that fit in
the encapsulated category. Encapsulation
of active ingredients is a commonly used
practice to preserve shelf life, increase
bioavailability, improve taste and flavor
profile. Various pathways exist for
encapsulation of active ingredients and
understanding the encapsulation process
is important for analysis to ensure the
sample extraction process is optimized
for maximum recovery of the active
ingredient. Recovery of the same analyte,
using the same method in a sample that
is encapsulated compared to one that is
not encapsulated, may vary significantly,
thus resulting in potential for inaccurate
results. Large categories of fat soluble
vitamins, water soluble vitamins and other
active ingredients in the sports nutrition
category utilize encapsulation technologies.
Understanding the intricate details of the
active ingredients and its functionality
is important when performing analytical
testing for label claim verification. Working
closely with the partner laboratories to
share important information pertaining to
encapsulation of active ingredients in the
best interest of all involved parties.
CERTIFICATE OF ANALYSIS REVIEW
Ingredient certificate of analysis review is
critical when determining a test plan for the
qualification and ongoing quality control
analysis program. In many instances, the
reference methods listed on the vendor
certificate of analysis are not routine
methods offered by laboratory groups
within the United States. One of the most
common examples that illustrates this
point is the amino acid ingredient category.
Typical vendor certificates reference a
potency analysis method by titration,
while the vast majority of the methods

QUALITY CONTROL CORNER
offered for the amino acids are based
on liquid chromatography platforms
with pre- or post-column derivatization
of amino acids. Method differences
can result in variability specific to
instrument or method of choice.
Considering the potential differences
in advance will help to ensure that the
material qualification process is robust.
Another area specific to certificate of
analysis review process is ensuring
that the ingredient meets the specific
requirements important for the end user.
These can be items such as bulk density,
particle size distribution, heavy metal
content, pH, color consistency and other
attributes not specifically called out on
the certificate. A well rounded review by
qualified experts will ensure laboratories
are performing the right tests within a well
defined scope.
LAB SHOPPING
The process of laboratory shopping based
on “passing” results is still common. Instead
of accepting the first acceptable analytical
result – which may not meet manufacturer
specification – a test is repeated at another
laboratory until an acceptable result is
obtained. Sometimes the result differences
between laboratories may not be significant
and within measurement of uncertainty, but
the specification is just barely met or not
met. In the current landscape of increasing
transparency, the companies should do
their best to engage with the various
laboratory groups to better understand
the reasons behind result discrepancies.
If the laboratory engagement is lacking in
this critical step, regardless of the passing
results obtained from this partner, the
decision to use this laboratory as a testing
service provider should be evaluated in
great detail. Transparency of the process
doesn’t mean getting every single detail
about a specific method or a process, but
a general overview that can provide the
visibility to solve the problem on hand.
The amount of great progress made
during the past several years is evident
with the increasing consumer awareness,
transparency and trust initiatives channeled
through various industry leading brands,
trade groups and health advocates. It is in
our best interest to continue to build on and
make improvements to the good foundation
that’s been laid out to ensure future growth
and prosperity.
Requesting the accurate analysis specific to the
active compound form present in the product is critical for the timely and accurate completion of the analysis.
MARKET TRENDS

MARKET TRENDSWINTER 2018
B12The factories located in Heibei Province are cutting output to stay within the guidelines for the government’s pollution control requirement. The other factory in Ningxia Province is increasing the price according to the supply situation. Generally, fewer and fewer low price quotations are offered and the price is increasing step by step.
BCAAThe major factory in Hubei Province is providing extremely limited supply of Leucine now. Valine and Isoleucine increased a little bit but the availability is still balanced with demand. As a result, BCAA price is high and firm due to the Leucine shortage.
The vegan version of BCAA is even shorter because fermented Leucine is very hard to find in the market. The availability from the only factory is extremely short as well.
BETAINE ANHYDROUS/BETAINE HClThe output in Shandong Province is affected by the pollution control but availability is good as there are plenty of factories in China and throughout the world. The price may change a little bit due to the currency exchange rate but generally will keep stable.
BIOTINDue to the starting material shortage, the price of Biotin is rising. The increase is more obvious in USP grade against 2% and 1% in food and feed grade. This increase gets a lot of attention from feed pre-mixed factories and this trend will continue for two to three months.
CALCIUM D-PANTOTHENATEThe quotation from the two major factories are
on and off in the last two months. The price is at a high level compared with last year or earlier this year, but it is fluctuating. One reason is that a new factory has stepped into production and offers a small amount of availability, and the other is the price is way beyond the customer’s expectation which slows down the transaction.
CHOLINE CHLORIDE/BITARTRATEThe major factories in China have made some slight price adjustments in the last two months due to the starting material cost increasing and the currency exchange rate. The price increase is more reflected in the feed grade of Choline Chloride, and for food grade products, the price has increased step by step.
CHONDROITIN/COLLAGENChondroitin and Collagen products are getting more and more popular, especially Collagen. Collagen from different animal sources is
Well, it’s winter, and with the heating and warming system being launched in North China, it is a disturbing time for Chinese factories to face and challenge the pollution control pressure. As updated in last our few reports, the Chinese government is taking measures and actions to bring pollution under control and now the measures are even stricter.
The news about environmental protection is well reported and known. The data is monitored in real time and published on the government’s official website. It is the right thing to do and good for people’s living conditions, but in the business world, the supply and cost are greatly affected.
There are two periods of such market conditions: One was in 2008, the year of the Beijing Olympics, and the other is now, the new era under the administration of President Xi. We believe it will have a long and profound influence not only now, but for many years to come.
It is the right thing to do and good for people’s
living conditions, but in the business world, the supply
and cost are greatly affected.

MARKET TRENDS
becoming the new star ingredient for beauty and joint health, and dosage is normally large.
China used to be the largest exporter and now Thailand and the U.S. are also joining the market. The price is increasing step by step.
CITRIC ACID ANHYDROUSThis product’s raw cost is stable in China and the sales price in the U.S. market is largely depending on the anti-dumping investigation. There might be some changes in coming months, but so far, it has only increased a little bit.
COQ10The price of CoQ10 has bounced back a little bit in the last month compared with the sharp increase from September to early October. The factories are taking all kinds of measures to deal with the pressure of pollution control and are trying to stabilize the market. We think the price will remain stable at the current level in the coming two to three months.
CREATINE MONOProduction from the major factories is effected
by the pollution control. The production locations used to be located and centralized in Yangtze River Delta, but now factories are moving North West to Ningxia provinces where the starting material is better supplied and the pollution control pressure is less.
The factories in the old location, Yangtze River Delta, downsized their output greatly. One of them stopped production in September and others in the new location, Ningxia provinces, are facing great challenge as well. It is expected the price will start to increase in November and in the meantime, the supply will get tight.
DHEASince our last update, the price has significantly increased and customers have been eager to place an order. As we mentioned in the last report, DHEA comes from two sources, Soy and Wild Yam. The one from Wild Yam increased all the way, and while the one from Soy was stable or trending down before, it is now increasing and better recognized and also better priced. The attention of price increase is more reflected in the U.S. market compared with two months ago.
FOLIC ACIDThe price is running high but at a reasonable level for now.
GABAProduction at major factories is on and off due to inspection and pressure from the government. Those located in the old area close to the residents are intensely monitored by the government. The rest are lucky enough to be located in a remote industrial zone and pollution control is guided by administration of the industrial zone.
With the winter coming, it’s expected the demand will be very strong and prices will increase fast.
GINGERTraditionally used in India and China, U.S. marketers and formulators are using this ingredient more and more, both powder and oil forms. It is widely produced in India and China, and the business volume will be huge for this ingredient in the future. As to the price, it is stable and goes with the fresh Ginger price change.
MARKET TRENDS
GLUCOSAMINEWith all the costs increasing, Glucosamine price has increased a little bit as well. Glucosamine price has been at a low level for the past two years and the eagerness for better profit from factories is strong.
GLYCINEIn the U.S. market, the material now is in short supply. There are many good factories around the globe including Japan, Thailand and of course, China. However, due to the antidumping policy, these factories are more focused on their domestic markets. With limited output, the export to the U.S. market is difficult.
GRAPE SEEDMore factories are beginning to use the starting material coming from Europe and the price is lifting slightly.
GREEN COFFEE BEAN 50%Supply is currently stable but at a higher level against that of earlier this year due to the raw material price increase. Both Indian and Chinese
material are available in the market now.
The benefits of Green Coffee Bean are more and more recognized, not only for weight loss, but also in improving the immune system
GREEN TEA EXTRACTDemand and supply are balanced and the price is stable. There is a trend that customers are looking for a better version of tea instead of just Green Tea.
INOSITOLThe supply of Inositol is getting tight and the price is increasing step by step. Due to the pollution control pressure, the factories are having very limited output or shutting down for the winter. We think the price will continue to increase as the output is very limited in the coming three months.
L-ARGININE/L-CITRULLINEL-Arginine is in short supply now. The largest factory in China doesn’t have a stable output and Korean and Indonesian factories are also on a great number of back orders.
Citrulline price so far is stable but while using Arginine as the starting material, it is expected the price will increase step by step including Citrulline Malate as well.
L-CARNITINESCompared with two to three months ago, availability is better. Factories resumed production step by step from shut down and have started to ship out goods. The prices are still at a high level and future trends will depend on how long factories can keep the output stable and how well they can handle the pollution control pressure.
L-LEUCINE/L-TYROSINE/ L-CYSTEINE/L-HISTINE HClSince the largest factory in China doesn’t have a stable output, the price increased fast in the last two months. There are some other factories available, but the hydralization process causes pollution issues, so the output of all these amino acids are still limited.
L-GLUTAMINECurrently, the demand is stronger than the

MARKET TRENDS
output capacity from China. In 2017, the supply is mainly from the two major factories in China while Korean and Japanese factories have limited output or have stopped production. It is said that Japanese factories are considering outsourcing the Glutamine production to the Chinese factory. If that happens, China will be the only country to produce Glutamine.
The sales channels are stable and it’s expected that the price will stay firm and at a high level in 2018.
L-GLUTATHIONE REDUCEDThere used to be some new enzyme technology to produce this ingredient but the production is on and off. Only the fermentation production process continues smoothly with a consistent supply, but the Shandong province, where the factory is located, is intensely monitored by the government.
With the increasing demand domestically and internationally, it is expected the price will be firm and trend upwards in the coming month.
L-LYSINEThe situation of Lysine is similar to that of L-Tryptophan but the supply is better. The price has increased a little bit but not as much as L-Tryptophan.
L-TRYPTOPHANKorean and Japanese feed grade factories have very limited output and China factories are busy with fulfillment of back orders. Chinese factories used to get Korean or Japanese feed grade product refined to get the food grade or USP grade product, but now they can only get the domestic material.
It is expected that the price will continue to increase until the feed grade production supply improves, otherwise, it will be even higher and in shorter supply.
MSMThe supply of starting materials and production are normal so far and we see the price is stable in the last two to three months.
NIACIN/NIACINAMIDEWith the major factories increasing the quotation offer, the market price is at a higher level compared with Q1 and Q2. With the cost increase to treat the air pollution in fall and winter, and also the limited output of the starting material of Pyridine, the price will stay firm at its current level. However, a new factory in Jiangxi province has started production and we will keep customers posted on how this will affect the future supply of B3.
PYRIDOXINE
Due to pollution control pressure and starting material tight supply, the price offer from major factories are high and firm. A fire occurred at a factory in Hubei Province and led to a shutdown, so it is expected the price could be higher in the coming two months.
RHODIOLA ROSEA
It’s very hard to get the starting material this year and many factories have stopped production. The price has increased significantly and is still quickly moving to a higher level.
RIBOFLAVIN
Riboflavin was stable before this October, but after that, the price started to increase. Generally, the increase is still a result of pollution control and factory shut-down.
Now, all the factories in China are providing a very limited output into the market and prices have reached the second highest in history in the last 10 years.
MARKET TRENDS MARKET TRENDS
SODIUM HYALURONATE
Currently the supply and price are stable. There used to be many factories producing this ingredient but now only the ones who can offer production consistently and of a high quality have survived. The factories are all paying close attention to staying within the guidelines.
SUCRALOSE
We often hear from different channels that the price of Sucralose will increase significantly, and we also believe this will take affect soon, but as of now, the price is stable. Under such pollution control and cost increase pressure, we think the price could remain stable because factories are at the stage of fighting to gain more market share. How long they can keep doing this is questionable because there are many voices advising to increase price to cover cost, so it is a good time to lock in a blanket order contract.
STEVIA
The price is currently stable due to collective reasons. The harvest is normal this year and it will not lead to a sharp increase due to the raw material leaves. The demand increases and output increases, but the competition is still going on.
TAURINE
A great shortage occurred in the middle of the year but now the supply is getting better compared with two to three months ago.
Taurine price was at a low level for the past two years and factories experienced a deficit period. There will be some fluctuation, but generally, Taurine price will stay at a high level in the coming three months.
THEOBROMINE/CAFFEINE SYNTHETIC
Theobromine and Caffeine factories are causing pollution problems and the supply is getting tight. Factories were expecting the supply to go back to normal in Q4, but based on current pollution control pressure, price will stay firm or increase even more.
Since November, natural Caffeine has become available from India at ingredientsonline.com. Although it is higher in price against the synthetic version, it provides another option for customers to get Caffeine and improves availability.
THIAMINE
Supply is tight throughout the year and will stay very firm in the U.S. market. There’s a new factory which causes the price to lower a little bit, but generally, the price of Thiamine is at an historical level and it will last for another quarter as minimum.
TURMERIC/CURCUMIN
Supply is currently stable and available from both India and China. Turmeric is traditionally from India but Chinese material is also very competitive. We were being asked why this happens and after visiting factories and research, we started to realize that the competitiveness of Chinese material comes from the tax rebate. It is an encouragement incentive given by the Chinese government for export business.
It is the time of harvest season for Turmeric and it is a normal year, so generally, the price will stay stable.
VITAMIN A/VITAMIN EBASF declares force majeure for Vitamin A and E and several carotenoids on Nov. 10 due to a fire which occurred during the startup of the Citral plant in Ludwigshafen. The cleaning process, follow-up inspection, repair and restart of the Citral plant will take several weeks.

MARKET TRENDS
The distributors and manufacturers are very busy trying to find availability, and the price will quickly be increasing in the coming two to three months.
VITAMIN CFactories in Shandong and Hebei province are shut down due to the pollution control pressure. The export of Vitamin C into the U.S. continues to increase in recent months and the willingness for blanket orders from all types of customers is very strong.
We are expecting some new production capacity in the market by the end of Q1 to early Q2 and will keep customers posted on how this will affect the market in our next issue of the ingredientsonline.com Magazine.
Vitamin C derivatives like Sodium Ascorbate and Calcium Ascorbate, as well as their DC grades, are very limited in supply. Some small factories who are doing the derivatives still have some output, but the supply from the major factories are very short.
XYLITOL/XYLITOL DCSupply has not gotten better as expected and is still very tight due to starting material and pollution control pressure. Generally, the price is increasing, but not as much as the price of some vitamins because we find the starting material D-Xylose is getting a little better compared with Q3.

ood safety has been at the top of the FDA’s concerns for many years, and with that came FSMA, FSVP, HARPC, PCQI and other acronyms, most of which come with chapters of new rules to play by. At ingredientsonline.com, we don’t stop at just safety; quality, safety and consistency are our utmost priorities. In order to embody these fundamentals and ultimately foster trusting relationships with our customers, we have developed a robust QA/QC process to ensure the quality of service we provide. We validate our manufacturers and outsource testing to accredited labs to verify the quality of our factory partners and ingredients.
ingredientsonline.com is dedicated to providing high quality ingredients and accurate documentation, however, any documentation provided by or testing performed by/for ingredientsonline.com does not
absolve the customer from doing their due-diligence regarding the quality of the ingredients they purchase.

Making Sure Factories QualifyWith ingredient suppliers located in various countries around the world, establishing factory qualification programs can be an extremely daunting, albeit a necessary task. Before we even bring a factory onto the ingredientsonline.com platform, they must undergo and pass a thorough inspection process to become “qualified.” Our audit checklist reviews everything from site security to production procedures, to testing verification and compliance certifications. We review every procedure related to cGMPs, food safety and hazard analyses. Audits and inspections are meticulously carried out for both new and existing factory partners.
Reviewing and Approving IngredientsWhen a factory approaches us and says they’d like to put an ingredient on the platform, the first thing we do is give them a checklist of required documents: specification sheets, SDS’s, manufacturing flow charts, etc. We review all these documents before we approve the ingredient. Additionally, we understand the importance of these documents so they will be conveniently downloadable on the platform. Our goal is to provide supply-chain teams with as much information as possible on every ingredient. Since we’ve already established a relationship with the factory during their qualification process, any additional information that might be needed is just a couple of emails away.
QUALITY CONTROL PROCESSTRANSPARENCY
IN
Procedures Personalized to Your NeedsSince ingredientsonline.com does not perform manufacturing operations, cGMPs remain the manufacturers’ responsibilities. However, we can control how we store the products as you’re adding them to your cart. Our warehouses are meticulously arranged to minimize cross-contamination. Your customized shipping needs are never compromised. We carefully record your shipping instructions on each purchase order and make sure each request is fulfilled on time. We also perform three independent checks on each shipment before they leave our docks, verifying a match between the staged product and requested order. Every ingredientsonline.com customer can trust that they will receive what they ordered, how they ordered it… every order, every time.
Quality Assurance Prior to Arrival in the U.S.Our China-based Quality Control Unit reviews and approves shipments before sending them to the U.S. to ensure specification compliance. We even perform physical and microbial contamination tests in our China-based lab on random samples to verify manufacturer-supplied data. Once the ingredients arrive at our U.S. warehouses, our local team performs a secondary inspection to ensure the product and its packaging have not been compromised during transit.
Periodic Testing for Additional ConfidenceWe understand that above all else, the quality of the material and adherence to specifications are imperative. In order to establish quality, there needs to be consistency in practice and process. For that reason, we select random samples from our inventory and submit them to a battery of rigorous tests: identification, assay, constituent claims, heavy metal contamination, etc. We partner with accredited third party U.S. laboratories to perform these tests for us. Each compliant result strengthens the confidence of our factory partners even after they’ve been qualified.
